Jim Shooter, comic book legend and Marvel editor, passes away at 73
Shooter started writing comics when he was just 14. He got his first break at DC Comics with stories for Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes. By the time he was in his twenties, he had already become a recognised name. But it was at Marvel where his impact reached new heights.
The Marvel Era and Jim Shooter's legacy
In 1978, Jim Shooter was named editor-in-chief of Marvel. At the time, the company was struggling with poor sales, missed deadlines, and a lack of clear direction. Shooter stepped in with a clear vision, strict rules, and a deep understanding of the fans.
We are deeply saddened to hear Jim Shooter, former Editor-in-Chief, has passed away. Jim redefined the comic industry, and we will reflect on his undeniable legacy in the coming days. Our hearts are with his loved ones, and the many creators and fans who were touched by his work. pic.twitter.com/tFz6eTX0jU — Marvel Entertainment (@Marvel) July 1, 2025
Under his watch, Marvel launched hit titles and big events that boosted sales and brought new readers in. The X-Men became a phenomenon. Creators like Frank Miller and Walter Simonson flourished. Shooter also pushed new ideas like graphic novels and crossover events, helping the company dominate the comic book market in the 1980s.
But not everything was smooth. Shooter's strict management style caused friction with writers and artists. Some say he was too demanding. Others argue he fought hard to protect creators' rights and raise the quality of comics. His decision to kill off Phoenix in the X-Men remains one of the most debated moments in comic book history.
After leaving Marvel in 1987, Shooter started new companies like Valiant Comics and Defiant Comics. While these had moments of success, they often ended in conflict. Even so, Shooter never stopped pushing boundaries and trying new things in comics.
In his later years, he shared his experiences on his blog and appeared at comic conventions. Fellow creators like Paul Levitz and Bill Sienkiewicz paid tribute to his passion and drive. Shooter may have divided opinions, but most agree he helped save Marvel at a crucial time.

‘Kapata Nataka Sutradhari' trailer: Dhiraj MV and team promise a relevant religious satire
Kannada film Kapata Nataka Sutradhari is set to hit the screens on July 04, 2025. Written and directed by Dhiraj MV, the film is a religious satire. The film's trailer, which dropped on June 19, 2025, gained praise for its fresh treatment of a hot topic in today's India. The trailer shows a temple, in which devotees diligently follow the practice of crawling under an elephant idol. It is believed that prayers of those who follow this custom will be answered. One day, all hell breaks loose when an overweight boy gets stuck below the idol, and it is revealed that he is a Muslim. The trailer then showcases the confusion and chaos around the incident in a humorous manner. 'The agenda of the film is not to offend any community. What happens if a small incident gets a religious angle? I wanted to explore this idea,' Dhiraj says. The teaser begins with the quote, 'Left blames right. Right blames left. Nothing moves forward.' Kapata Nataka Sutradhari seems to touch themes such as the effect of political ideologies on society, patriarchy and gender. The debutant filmmaker adds that he sent drafts of his script to senior journalists and people from the film fraternity as part of his research. ALSO READ:'X&Y' movie review: Satya Prakash's human drama is an audacious attempt 'We didn't want to provoke people who believe in any particular ideology. I was handling a sensitive topic, and I had to convince my team members that I can execute my idea. That was one of the major challenges,' explains Dhiraj. Having assisted filmmakers such as Guruprasad and Sunil Kumar Desai, Dhiraj always aimed to make a relatable yet entertaining movie. 'I identify myself as a frustrated film buff. Most of the time, I cannot relate to what I see on the screen. So, when I was directing a film, I wanted to pick a relatable topic and convey it in an engaging manner.'

Spider-Man director was forced to change Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire's intros after reading a Reddit thread
Director Jon Watts, known for helming Spider-Man: No Way Home, recently reflected on one of the film's biggest creative pivots — the reveal of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as alternate Spider-Men. During a conversation at the Mediterrane Film Festival, Jon explained how early plans to introduce the iconic web-slingers during a tragic moment were completely reworked after he came across eerily accurate fan predictions online. Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire Speaking to Collider, Jon shared how the initial plan was to introduce the older Peter Parkers during a crucial emotional scene — right after Aunt May's death. The moment was imagined as a somber one, where 'Peter's going to be sad because Aunt May has just died, and that the portals are going to open, and the two Spider-Men are going to step out.' He noted that 'there had been rumors that Tobey and Andrew were going to be in the movie,' even while the team was still filming and finalizing the script. At the time, Jon had only a rough vision for the setting of this team-up. 'It's probably a rooftop somewhere. It's all sort of hazy. You're still trying to figure it out,' he said. But that vague vision quickly hit a roadblock when he stumbled upon fan theories and concept art online. 'Then I was on Reddit, and I was looking at people who had already made fan art of, 'This is probably what it's going to be like when the two Spider-Men get revealed,'' he said. 'It was on a rooftop. It was sad, two Doctor Strange portals were open and two Spider-Men are stepping out. I was like, 'Well, we can't do that. If that's exactly what everyone thinks we're going to do, we absolutely can't do that',' he added. That realisation led to a dramatic shift in how the reveal played out onscreen. Instead of emerging together on a rooftop, the alternate Spider-Men are brought into the story through Ned Leeds, who inadvertently summons them using Doctor Strange's sling ring — inside his family home. 'I was like, 'What does no one expect that we're going to do? What's something that no one's going to see coming?'' Jon recalled. 'I was like, 'Probably having the two Spider-Men appear at Ned's Filipino grandma's house in Queens. I don't think anyone was doing fan art of that on Reddit',' he added. Jon credited the inclusion of Ned's grandmother, played by Mary Rivera, as the unexpected twist that gave the scene its charm. 'It was the middle of the pandemic, so we had to find a lady and fly her from Hawaii to Atlanta to shoot all of this,' he said. Changing the setting, he added, allowed him to subvert fan expectations in the most satisfying way. 'So, as soon as you put her in that scene and change the location, now I feel like I've double-crossed the audience in the best way, where they're seeing everything that they were hoping that they would see in a way that they were never expecting they were going to,' he concluded.
