
Southwest adds cockpit safety alerts across nearly entire fleet of 800 planes
The safety alert system, designed by Honeywell, sets off verbal and text warnings if a pilot is about to use the wrong runway or approaches too fast for landing.
It's like the alert systems used in many modern cars, dinging when a driver edges too close to another car, person or curb.

'Honeywell's SmartRunway and SmartLanding software will provide our pilots with enhanced situational awareness to ensure the highest level of safety while operating on runways throughout the network,' Andrew Watterson, Southwest's chief operating officer, said in a statement.
The technology is an attempt to avoid incidents like one that occurred on March 20, when a Southwest plane started taking off from a taxiway at Orlando International Airport instead of the runway running alongside it, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Thankfully, an air-traffic controller intervened before take-off – helping to avoid a potential crash on a short taxiway or collision with another plane.
But it's possible the Honeywell alert could have chimed in sooner, warning: 'On taxiway! On taxiway!'
In 2017, an Air Canada jet nearly landed on a taxiway at San Francisco's airport – where four planes waited with 1,000 passengers on-board.
The following year, the National Transportation Safety Board found that Honeywell's alerts might have been able to alert the Air Canada pilots of the mistake well before the near-miss.

Honeywell's alert system can also warn pilots when they are approaching a runway too fast, too high or if they're overshooting the runway for a 'long landing.'

'Honeywell systems and software onboard aircraft today help enhance situational awareness for pilots and flight crews — especially in low visibility flying conditions — to avoid wrong surface operations and runway excursions,' Thea Feyereisen, pilot and fellow at Honeywell Aerospace Technologies, said in a note.
'We can't rely on just one system, as it could fail, and we need multiple ways to notify the pilots of a safety alert – sight, sound and sometimes tactile displays.'

Southwest decided to add the Honeywell alerts across its Boeing 737 fleet early last year to manage safety risks, according to Watterson.
Last August, an advisory panel recommended the Federal Aviation Administration require new aircraft to come equipped with certain cockpit alerts. It did not extend this recommendation to older, existing planes.

The FAA is reviewing this recommendation.
In December, Southwest also instructed flight attendants to start cleaning up the cabin earlier in the landing process – around 18,000 feet instead of 10,000 feet – in an effort to reduce injuries among the crew.
Other carriers like Alaska Airlines have added the Honeywell alerts to their planes, while manufacturers like Airbus and Boeing are working on their own runway alerts.
Meanwhile, carriers are trying to ease fears of flying following several highly-reported crashes and near-misses.
Some 64% of Americans said they believe air travel is very or somewhat safe – a drop from 71% the year before, according to a poll conducted by AP-NORC in February.

Leasing companies allege Flair failed to make rent payments, ignored default notices
Plane-leasing companies that seized four aircraft from Flair Airlines in 2023 are seeking damages from the budget carrier, alleging it failed to make rent payments by the deadline and ignored repeated default notices. The allegations were detailed in a statement of defence and counterclaim for US$30.9 million filed in Ontario Superior Court on June 26. In March 2023, Flair Airlines filed a $50-million lawsuit against Irish-based Airborne Capital Inc. and a trio of affiliated leasing corporations, alleging they 'secretly' found a better deal for the Boeing 737 Max aircraft with a third party and then set up Flair for default. Flair said at the time it received no notice over the 'unlawful' seizures, which took place at airports in Toronto, Edmonton and Waterloo, Ont., precluding the airline from alerting or rebooking customers. The airline then found itself down by more than a fifth of its 19-plane fleet, forcing it to cancel multiple flights. 'The lessors sent agents to seize the aircraft in the middle of the night as passengers were boarding planes for spring break vacations,' Flair's statement of claim said. But Airborne Capital has said that Flair 'regularly' missed payments over the previous five months, prompting the plane seizures, and that it had been in regular contact with Flair's representatives about its obligations. None of the allegations in Flair's lawsuit or the countersuit have been tested in court. In new court documents, the lessors deny any breach of contract or duty to act in good faith, saying the seizures were necessary to protect the value of the aircraft. They said the seizures took place at Canadian airports to avoid stranding passengers overseas and were timed overnight to prevent disruption during busier daytime hours. 'Flair's action is an attempt to recover self-inflicted losses arising from its own defaults,' the countersuit stated. 'For months, Flair failed to make rent and other payments when due under the leases. It ignored repeated default notices in which the lessors expressly reserved their rights and remedies under the leases, including to terminate the leasing of the aircraft and repossess the aircraft.' The leasing companies said they 'repeatedly advised that the continuing arrears were unacceptable.' They also denied that the seizures were related to a more profitable deal with a third-party. 'In fact, it took the defendants several months and significant cost ... to re-market and restore the aircraft to a suitable condition before they could be re-leased or sold,' the document stated. 'Two aircraft required major repairs because one or more of their engines were unserviceable due to defects uncovered post recovery from Flair.' In a statement, Flair CEO Maciej Wilk called the counterclaim a 'predictable response' to Flair's lawsuit. 'The company does not comment on active litigation, but would like to point out that the claims in question relate to events that occurred over two years ago,' Wilk said. 'Flair continues to maintain and cultivate productive and positive relationships with all of its stakeholders, including its customers, lessors and other industry partners and remains focused on executing its strategy and commitment to be Canada's most reliable and affordable airline.' Shackleton Advisers acquires Chetwood Group
Shackleton Advisers has acquired the Chetwood Group, enhancing its footprint in the South West as part of its UK expansion strategy. The Chetwood Group comprises Chetwood Wealth Management, Chetwood Investment Management, Chetwood Private Wealth, Ermin Fosse Financial Management, and Darnells Wealth Management. This acquisition, the fourth for Shackleton in 2025, increases its assets under management by over £900m ($1.2bn), bringing the total to approximately £8bn ($10.9bn). Additionally, the deal brings 45 new employees to Shackleton, raising its nationwide workforce size to around 450. Chetwood Group executive chairman Mark Pendarves said: 'Our journey has brought us to a stage where further growth and evolution require significant investment in technology and infrastructure. 'As a privately owned family business, we've made the thoughtful decision to join a like-minded organisation that shares our values and commitment to excellence.' Shackleton recently disclosed a definitive agreement for a majority investment from funds managed by Lee Equity Partners, which will replace its current private equity investor, Sovereign Capital Partners. The latest transaction is the 19th completed by Shackleton since Sovereign's initial investment.
