Aotearoa's Ringlets Share New Single & Video 'I Was On That Roof Once'
Following up the world-weary 'Heavenly Wheel' and blistering 'Street Massage', 'I Was on That Roof Once' showcases the varied sound of the band's upcoming sophomore album. Glistening guitar meets the ticking drums of Arlo Grey and gorgeous harmonies - courtesy of vocalists Arabella Poulsen, László Reynolds & Leith Towers - with a not-so-subtle introduction of the LP's title in the track's mystifying opening line.
About the song and its music video, Leith shares ''I Was on That Roof Once' circles the drain of sincerity, belief, and our better natures gone a bit mouldy. The video features door dancing, a lost Irish tradition we've likely misremembered, pitched somewhere between ceremony and bluff. It's a nod to ritual, balance, and the ways we try not to spill ourselves.'
To be released on June 27th via Flying Nun Records and Leather Jacket Records, The Lord Is My German Shepherd (Time for Walkies) is the band's shimmering follow-up to their distinct eponymous debut in 2023 and a vibrant expression of their singular song craft.

The Ringlets: Imploding post-punk styles into an album with a grip that won't let go. Photo / Lola Fountain-Best Graham Reid is an NZ journalist, author, broadcaster and arts educator. His website, Elsewhere, provides features and reports on music, film, travel and other cultural issues. The shorthand for Auckland's Ringlets invariably mentions 'post-punk', a term so broad it includes the skewed pop of Toy Love, the mayhem of The Fall and Pere Ubu, the jerky rhythms of The Feelies and Talking Heads, and the left-field rock assault of Headless Chickens and Skeptics. If 'post-punk' means anything it may just be expression, off the leash. Ringlets' second album – an extension of their clever, free-wheeling, self-titled 2023 debut – is certainly that. At various points it implodes many post-punk styles into an album with a grip that won't let go. At the easy entry end is the anxious pop of Heavenly Wheel ('quick, say something profound') and the deceptive, folk rock-adjacent Rolling Blunts on the Dresden Codex, a title that shows Ringlets are clever clogs. Elsewhere there's the gloom drone, wired-up Posh Girl Holds a Whip about bondage and punishment: 'private education just couldn't iron out kinks in leathery hide. Skin tight to callipyge' (look it up); the snappy I Was on That Roof Once ('spewing aphorisms rolled in glitter balderdash') and the agitated rhythms of Sucking on a Surly Pout paralleling a suffocating dream: 'Caught in a loop rewinding … there's no way out.' The more measured Half an Idiot devolves into brittle guitar and an angry, agonising scream about the hospitalised results of 'when you mix 12 standards with a quad bike'. Despite its squelchy rhythm, This Year's Hottest Movie ends the album on its weakest note. But mostly the well-presented and butter-wouldn't-melt Ringlets – confidently twisting art-pop and expectation like a post-punk version of early Split Enz's unpredictability – surprise frequently in these 40 minutes. It's not often you hear 'hemiparesis' in a lyric. This album is available digitally and on vinyl. Soft Bait Share New Single/Video ‘Long Line', And Announce In-Store Performance
Soft Bait are back and serving us with another ripping tune, ' Long Line ', from their upcoming sophomore offering ' Life Advice ' — due out 25th July via Flying Nun Records. 'Long Line' is about the baggage you didn't ask for but got anyway; bad backs, bad tempers, petty grudges passed down like family recipes. It's the sound of generational hangups with a beat you can stomp to. As Josh puts it, 'It's about self-concept, the beliefs and traits we inherit and hold onto, even when they don't serve us.' The track doesn't hold back. Pounding bass and drums grind forward with intent. Guitars jab like they're trying to start something. Then it cracks open into something big, messy, and weirdly uplifting, like yelling into the void and getting an answer back. Directed by Ryan Fielding, and made with the support of NZ On Air Music, the video for ' Long Line ' drops the viewer into a rusted-out dream where dystopia comes with a side of deep-fried cheese. Inside a flickering future, workers grind through shifts at a neon-lit pizza parlour, jacked into glitching VR headsets. In their heads: a band caged in an industrial dive, playing to a crowd of cyber bikers from hell. It's doomscroll-era paranoia wrapped in a warped MTV fever dream, an end-of-shift hallucination with no log-off. The band have also announced that, to celebrate their new album, they are performing a special one-off in-store at our Flying Nun Records shop on Karangahape Road in Auckland. It's free, and we reckon it'll be the hottest ticket in town — so mark Saturday 26th July @ 3PM this in your calendar now! Soft Bait are a four-piece from Tāmaki Makaurau making pointed, off-centre post-punk that barrels forward with restless momentum.
