Moment of linguistic pride: Wedding invite in Koya

KHAMMAM: For the first time, a wedding invitation in the Koya language has been printed and distributed. The development is being seen not just as a wedding announcement but as a milestone for Telangana's tribal communities that has given a spoken identity a written form.
The invitation celebrates the upcoming marriage of Kanna Raju from Palvanch village and Pune Lakshmi Sharanya from Jagadish Colony in Bhadrachalam, scheduled for August 3.
Unlike past tribal ceremonies where Telugu served as the medium for written communication, this card is in Koya, a language spoken by nearly 16 lakh people across nine districts in the state.
The invitation contains traditional Koya terms for each element of the wedding, from pandir muhurtham (auspicious wedding eve) and pelli muhurtham (main wedding ceremony) to ma sonta nar (our own people), kabur (feast) and karanganur iyal (ceremony venue).
Carefully composed and printed using the Telugu script, which has been adopted for writing Koya, the invitation carries the full imprint of local customs, making it not only functional but also symbolic.
At the top, a line reads, 'Wedding invitation in Koya language'. This quiet affirmation signals the beginning of a new chapter for a language long confined to oral tradition.
The card was formally released on Monday by Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) project officer B Rahul at the ITDA office in Bhadrachalam. The date coincides with Koya Language Day.
'This is a welcome moment,' said Rahul. 'The availability of a script for the tribal mother tongue deserves praise.' He hailed the effort that had gone into transforming the spoken Koya language into a written one, in the initiative led by ITDA Bhadrachalam. Until recently, the lack of a standard script had kept Koya largely oral, with Telugu filling the gap for written needs.

Yadadri temple's Sanskrit Vidyapeetham upholds inclusive Vedic learning for over 70 years

NALGONDA: Established in 1952 under the supervision of the temple committee, Yadagirigutta's renowned Sri Lakshminarasimha Swamy Temple launched the Sri Lakshminarasimha Swamy Sanskrit Vidyapeetham with a clear mission: to preserve spiritual and cultural values through the promotion of Sanskrit and Vedic knowledge. For over seven decades, the institution has remained steadfast in its commitment to this cause, say officials. One of the hallmarks of this Vidyapeetham is its provision of completely free education, boarding and lodging to all students. This support from the temple ensures that financial constraints never stand in the way of learning. The peaceful, residential environment allows students to immerse themselves fully in their academic and spiritual pursuits, the officials add. While Sanskrit was once reserved for the elite, the Vidyapeetham sets an example in inclusive education by admitting students from all castes and religions without discrimination. This egalitarian approach not only makes Sanskrit accessible to all sections of society but also fosters a spirit of social harmony. It functions not just as a centre of learning, but as a space that nurtures unity and equal opportunity. Keeping up with modern times In keeping with contemporary needs, the Vidyapeetham offers more than just Sanskrit instruction. Students' shortage: 25 govt schools in Ballari face closure

Ballari: Despite govt initiatives to improve education quality and attract students to public schools in Ballari district, student numbers continue to decline. Of the district's 720 govt schools, 194 have reported reduced enrolment this academic year. "Moerover, 25 of these schools have not seen their student numbers exceed a single digit. This is a reflection of the lack of enrolment of children," states Shanthappa Bellad, a parent from Toranagallu. The district has 229 govt lower primary schools (including 1 aided), 443 higher primary schools (including 41 aided), and 124 govt high schools (including 34 aided) across five taluks. The govt provides free uniforms, textbooks, footwear, hot meals, eggs, milk, bananas, and qualified teachers to ensure quality education and prevent malnutrition. "However, the number of children turning to govt schools is decreasing year by year owing to the parents' obsession with English medium," states DDPI B Umadevi. She notes that Urdu and Telugu medium schools are particularly affected by low enrolment rates. Among govt schools, only a few students enrolled in 194 schools, which include primary, higher primary, and 39 high schools for the 2025-26 academic year. Notably, LKG and UKG classes have no enrolments at all. There are 656 students in class 1, 786 in class 2, 791 in class 3, 944 in class 4, 1,102 in class 5, 187 in class 6, 165 in class 7, 47 in class 8, 31 in class 9, and 23 in class 10. "House-to-house visits were carried out in both urban and rural regions for eight days before the commencement of the school year to boost the enrolment of children in govt schools. However, parents seem to lack enthusiasm for enrolling their children," remarks Andanagouda Malipatil, a teacher from Siruguppa. The situation is dire in 25 govt schools, including Kannada, Telugu, and Urdu medium institutions. The Govt High School and Telugu Medium High School in KHB Colony, Siruguppa taluk, have registered just one student each. In this context, the Education Reform Committee had organised a meeting in June, focused on informing parents about the resources accessible in govt schools. As a result, there was a significant rise in enrolment in numerous schools throughout the district. DDPI B Umadevi explains that schools with low attendance are being consolidated with nearby institutions to ensure educational continuity, particularly affecting Urdu and Telugu medium schools. The shortage of permanent teachers and poor infrastructure are noted as the key reasons for parents' unwillingness to send their children to govt schools. This is considered as the main cause behind decreasing enrolment rates.
