Over 100 illegal bases found along Kelantan-Thailand border

KOTA BHARU: More than 100 illegal bases remain active along the Kelantan-Thailand border despite intensified enforcement efforts and the closure of unauthorised routes since December last year. The General Operations Force (GOF) Southeast Brigade commander, Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid, confirmed the presence of these bases in Tumpat, Pasir Mas, and Tanah Merah districts, which serve as key pathways for cross-border violations. 'The terrain and the proximity of these illegal bases to public settlements make continuous monitoring challenging,' he told Bernama. Between January 1 and July 14 this year, 71 individuals were arrested for illegally crossing the border via Sungai Golok. The detainees included 54 men and 17 women from Malaysia, Thailand, Pakistan, and Myanmar. All arrests were made under Section 5(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, involving 42 Malaysians, 26 Thais, two Pakistanis, and one Myanmar national. Nik Ros Azhan noted that most arrests occurred along Sungai Golok, previously the main route for border residents. 'Although the closure order was issued some time ago, there are still individuals who try to take advantage of these illegal routes without considering the security and legal risks,' he said. Some detainees claimed they crossed briefly for shopping, visiting relatives, or leisure, while others sought informal employment in construction, plantations, and restaurants. Additionally, some arrests were linked to the smuggling of subsidised goods. Since Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat ordered the shutdown of illegal jetties and bases in December 2024, residents with relatives across the border have been compelled to use the official Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) complex. The stricter enforcement has also affected boat operators along Sungai Golok, who now face declining customers as border crossings are no longer unrestricted. Nik Ros Azhan stressed that the GOF, alongside other security agencies, will continue tightening border control to protect national sovereignty. 'Anyone wishing to enter the neighbouring country must use legal routes and comply with immigration laws,' he said. On July 5, Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan called for stronger border enforcement through increased manpower, improved security assets, and better inter-agency coordination. He highlighted that the numerous illegal routes along the Kelantan-Thailand border remain a critical national security issue. - Bernama

Royal intervention again poses questions about our maintenance culture

LETTERS: It took the concern expressed by the His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, to get the authorities to spring into action to attend to issues concerning clogged drains and garbage collection in one part of Kuala Lumpur. The King's complaint has caused the Ministry of Housing and Local Government to issue a stern warning to concession companies to deliver solid waste management services or face penalties. The situation highlights a concerning breakdown in both local governance and civic responsibility in Kuala Lumpur. The fact that it took the intervention of the King to spur action on clogged drains and inadequate garbage collection points to a serious systemic failure within the relevant authorities. Several factors likely contribute to this. For instance, the authorities may lack effective mechanisms for identifying, monitoring and addressing such problems, perhaps due a deficiency in routine inspections, data collection, and responsive maintenance schedules. Even when problems are reported by citizens, the response may be slow or inadequate due to bureaucratic inefficiencies, insufficient resources, or a lack of accountability. The absence of consequences for inaction may embolden a lackadaisical attitude among responsible officials. The situation also reveals a gap in public engagement. While some members of the public may have observed the issues before the King, they probably failed to report them to the relevant authorities. Why? Perhaps the rakyat feel their reports will be ignored. Past experiences of ineffective responses could lead to a sense of powerlessness. Or they may not know the proper channels for reporting such issues. Or they may fear repercussions. While the response to the King's comments was appropriate, it is not a sustainable solution. A more robust system of local governance and citizen engagement is essential to prevent similar situations from arising in the future. This requires improved communication channels, stronger enforcement of existing regulations, and a greater sense of civic responsibility among the public. One of the many issues of public concern is how to develop a strong maintenance culture in Malaysia in the interest of public safety and convenience. It is time for everyone, the local authorities, government agencies, the private sector and every Malaysian to examine their shortcomings in the area of safety, service and maintenance and do something about it.

Madani gov't snubbed for harbouring Zakir Naik who sanctions rape of 'not fully covered' women

A HUMAN rights activist has hit out at the Madani administration for its hesitation to deport global celebrity preacher Zakir Naik who has seemingly accorded green light to the rape of women are not 'fully covered up' or in Islamic term, failed to don the hijab or perhaps purdah. Azira Aziz who is also a corporate and commercial lawyer claimed that 'it boggles my mind why the Madani government protects problematic religious preachers like this man'. 'People like him is why survivors find it difficult to access justice. My heart breaks whenever a survivor asks me, 'Pn Azira salah saya ke saya dirogol? (Mdm Azira, is it my fault that I was raped)?' she penned on X. 'Just deport him.' It boggles my mind why the Madani government protects problematic religious preachers like this man. People like him is why survivors find it difficult to access justice. My heart breaks whenever a survivor asks me, 'Pn Azira salah saya ke saya dirogol?' Just deport him… — Azira 🇲🇾 🌺 (@ladymissazira) July 14, 2025 Azira was alluding to a statement made by the controversial Muslim scholar that 'if the girl wasn't fully covered up, she is to blame' for the rape herself and 'if she was covered up, then the rape and murder that befall her is a test from God''. The fugitive Indian national preacher was answering the question if an individual who has committed a rape accidentally killed the girl, would be forgiven by Allah if he has repented and what justice would be accorded to the victim in this instance. Setting the record straight, a commenter stated recounted that although Zakir Naik has been around in Malaysia long before the Madani government existence, it was nevertheless guilty of harbouring him. 'In fact, the government should have prevented him from coming here. Anyway, the Madani government is at fault for not deporting him,' she berated as a fellow commenter revealed that it was the Barisan Nasional (BN) government prior to Pakatan Harapan taking over that granted Zakir Naik's PR (permanent resident) status. In fact, the approval came from current Deputy Prime Minister and UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who was then the home minister. Another commenter asked Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri and Religious Affairs Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar 'if such view can be accepted as part of the Malaysian culture'. While many men and women netizens supported Zakir Naik's deportation, a few argued that the latter is an asset 'to maintain the conservative votes'. As one commenter bluntly put it, 'with many Malays worshipping Zakir Naik, the opposition is bound to cook up a storm for the ruling government should he be deported'. Moreover, DAP of today is unlike the party of yesteryears for it 'no longer dare to touch Zakir Naik unlike the time of PH1.0'. Whatever the case is, there are always two sides to the coin as a handful of commenters concur with his seemingly narrow view for 'Zakir Naik is merely highlighting how women can prevent rape'. – July 17, 2025
