Sawan Somwar in 2025: When is the first one, time, ritual, and more
Across North India, devotees prepare to start their fasts before sunrise by participating in ritual baths, abhishekam, Shiva Chalisa recitals, and temple offerings of bel patra and bilva leaves. Under the renewed skies of the rainy season, Sawan Somwar cultivates community, compassion, and contemplation and is embraced by individuals seeking blessings for health, prosperity, and harmony in relationships.
About Sawan Somwar
The month of Shravan, also known as Sawan, is regarded as spiritually fulfilling by followers of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is worshipped throughout the full month of Shravan, and it is thought that he is on Earth now. It is stated that as a result, devotees' prayers are answered faster.
Traditionally, Monday is connected to the worship of Lord Shiva. Consequently, Mondays during this time, called Sawan Somwar, have a unique religious meaning.
Devotees observe fasts, present the Shivling with water, milk, bel leaves, and dhatura flowers, and sing hymns like the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, Rudrashtak, and the Shiv Chalisa on these days.
"Many devotees observe sixteen Mondays or Solah Somwar fasting from the first Somwar of Sawan month," according to Drik Panchang's website. Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva's spouse, is honored on all Tuesdays, or Mangalwar, during Shravan. Mangala Gauri Vrat is the name for fasting on Tuesdays during Shravan month.
When is first Sawan Somwar?
The month of Sawan in 2025 will start on July 11 and go through August 9. There will be four Mondays in total throughout this time. The festival of Raksha Bandhan, which takes place on August 9th this year and honors the relationship between brothers and sisters, marks the end of the month.
