Mysterious ‘red lightning' spotted over Himalayas is finally explained
Thunderstorms can generate different types of transient luminous events like gigantic jets and blue jets via the transfer of charges involved in lightning formation from inside clouds to the ground.
On the night of 19 May 2022, two astrophotographers located near Pumoyongcuo Lake in Tibet captured the spectacular display of " red sprites ' – an atmospheric phenomenon named after their jellyfish-like appearance.
These were electrical discharges that produced vivid red flashes high above thunderstorms.
In this particular event in 2022, researchers also spotted 16 rare secondary jets and the first-ever recorded case in Asia of green airglow at the base of the ionosphere – a layer of the atmosphere containing a high concentration of ions about 80 to 1,000km (50 to 620miles) above the earth's surface.
'Nearly half of these events involved dancing sprites, with an additional 16 uncommon secondary jets and at least four extremely rare green emissions called 'ghosts' observed following the associated sprites,' scientists wrote in a new study.
The findings, published in the journal Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, revealed the driving force behind this grand red sprites display.
"This event was truly remarkable," says study co-author Gaopeng Lu from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
In the latest research, scientists assessed photographs of the event to probe the parent lightning discharges.
Due to the lack of precise timestamps to analyse photos and videos of the event, researchers developed an innovative method to synchronise video time using satellite trajectories and star field analysis.
Using this approach, they could determine the exact occurrence times of the sprites, and link them to their parent lightning discharges.
Based on the analysis, scientists found that the sprites were triggered by a 'high-peak current' positive cloud-to-ground lightning strikes within a massive convective system spanning a cloud area of over 200,000sqkm.
The parent lightning discharges which drove the red sprites arose from a convective complex stretching from the Ganges Plain to the southern foothills of the Tibetan Plateau, researchers noted.
'This suggests that thunderstorms in the Himalayan region have the potential to produce some of the most complex and intense upper-atmospheric electrical discharges on Earth,' Dr Lu said.
The findings, according to researchers, hint that storms in the region may generate even more complex discharge structures like the red sprites.

Analysing three different datasets on large volcanic eruptions that occurred around 300 million years ago, the researchers concluded that the 'BLOBS' are the source of these plumes. "This work highlights the importance of mantle plumes in acting as 'magma highways' to the surface, creating these giant eruptions," Cucchiaro said in a statement. Although some mysteries remain - like whether the BLOBS are fixed in place or if they travel across the underworld. "This research cracks open one of the questions that has long plagued scientists – are the BLOBS stationary or mobile and how do they relate to giant volcanic explosions – so it is a thrill to finally [be able] to unravel these mysteries," added geoscientist Nicholas Flament. What the new research suggests is that they are part of a dynamic system that has direct repercussions for all living things above ground. "We used statistics to show that the locations of past giant volcanic eruptions are significantly related to the mantle plumes predicted by our models," Cucchiaro and Flament wrote in The Conversation. "This is encouraging, as it suggests that the simulations predict mantle plumes in places and at times generally consistent with the geologic record." He said that the 'space' in which the entities are discovered feels like a 'higher dimensional structure,' as if someone who had lived in a two-dimensional world suddenly gained access to 3D space. Gallimore has now devoted himself full-time to researching the drug, and said that while there is a lot of academic work with DMT and brain imaging, many researchers are 'counter cultural.' He said that he hopes to one day fully understand 'where' the DMT experience takes people. 'We don't know the relationship between our universe and this place, whether it's parallel in some way, whether we are kind of a lower dimensional slice of some higher dimensional structure. We don't know where this place is or our relationship to it,' Gallimore admitted.

Nasa probe sends back closest-ever photos of the Sun
Nasa has released the closest-ever images of the Sun, captured just 3.8 million miles from its surface by the Parker Solar Probe. The probe, launched in 2018, gradually moved closer to the Sun by using Venus's gravity to achieve a tighter orbit. The newly released footage shows historic close-up images taken during the spacecraft's nearest approach to the Sun on 24 December 2024. This new data is expected to vastly improve space weather predictions, ensuring the safety of astronauts and the protection of technology on Earth and across the solar system.
