Ger Brennan linked with huge job after shock Louth exit
The Louth GAA community was reeling last night at the news that Brennan had departed following two years of a three-year agreement, and less than two months after he led the county to a historic Leinster title, their first in 68 years.
Now, speculation is rampant that he will succeed Dessie Farrell as Dublin manager following the decision of the latter to walk away after six years in the job in the aftermath of their quarter-final loss to Tyrone on Saturday night. Dessie Farrell. Pic: Ramsey Cardy/Sportsfile
However, despite the popularity of Brennan as a successor among many supporters, and also in the betting odds, it's understood that the process may not be as inevitable as is being flagged.
There is significant support in Dublin football for Declan Darcy, who was Jim Gavin's right-hand man during the incomparable years of success in the 2010s.
It is shaping up to be the most important managerial appointment in Dublin football in almost two decades, since Pat Gilroy was chosen and put in place the building blocks of the Gavin empire. Jim Gavin. Pic: Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile
Brennan's departure from Louth was accompanied by a gushing tribute from the county board, who credited his 'absolute and unwavering' commitment to the county through his two years in charge.
The statement also included a comment from Brennan, but no explanation for why he is leaving. Addressing the footballers who played under him, Brennan said what they had 'accomplished for the Gaels of County Louth will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come'.
If it's a huge blow to an ambitious county who have been on an upward curve since the appointment of Mickey Harte, it's also one that may best be viewed in the context of the Dublin vacancy.
And that is just one of the vacancies that could make the game even less predictable in the midst of the most memorable championship in decades. Mayo jettisoned Kevin McStay last week, with a growing clamour for Andy Moran to get that role.
Pádraic Joyce vowed to take time reflecting on his next move after Galway failed to get past Meath, and Kieran McGeeney said he'd do likewise in the aftermath of Armagh's defeat by Kerry.

Lewis Crocker v Paddy Donovan rematch terms agreed as Eddie Hearn gives update
Lewis Crocker and Paddy Donovan will collide in the first ever all-Irish world title fight this September in Belfast, promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed. The Matchroom boss says terms have been agreed for the mega-bout to take place six months on since the pair did battle at the SSE Arena in the city - and the IBF world welterweight title will be on the line. A sell-out crowd of 8,500 packed into the SSE back in March and the historic rematch could take place at Windsor Park, with a final decision on the venue expected next week. "Terms are agreed. Venue-wise, we hope to make a decision next week," Hearn told the Irish Mirror. "We want September at Windsor Park. We're doing everything we can to make it happen. "I mean, for two Irishmen to fight for the world welterweight title, we're never going to get it again. We're all systems go." Crocker was called the winner in controversial circumstances back in March when Donovan was disqualified after punching the Belfast man after the bell at the end of the eighth round. The Limerick southpaw had dominated the bout up to that stage, but had points deducted for use of the elbow and head in the sixth and eighth rounds by referee Marcus McDonnell. Donovan's trainer and former WBO world middleweight champion Andy Lee was very critical of the man in the middle afterwards, labelling his performance a "disgrace". That fight was an eliminator for the IBF title, currently held by Jaron 'Boots' Ennis, who Hearn also promotes. After an appeal was lodged from Donovan's team over the manner of the decision, the IBF ordered a rematch which again was to be a final eliminator. However, American Ennis is set to vacate the belt and move up to the light-middleweight division. And Hearn says the title will be on the line when the pair collide again, meaning it will be the first ever all-Irish world championship fight. Frank Smith, Matchroom CEO, visited Windsor Park last week to get a look at the venue that previously hosted a boxing event when Carl Frampton defeated Luke Jackson in 2018. Smith met with officials from the Irish Football Association (IFA) and said he is hopeful the NI Executive can help "in some way" with the event.

Louth GAA star rubs shoulders with €75m Man United star in Algarve workout
Louth GAA sharpshooter Sam Mulroy found himself rubbing shoulders with some big names as he managed to grab a snap with Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund. Mulroy was part of the Louth team that won their first Leinster title in 68 years, but just weeks after his county's season ended, he shared snaps that he was back hard at work. With the club championship nearing, Mulroy appears to have taken a deserved break to the sunny Algarve but made sure to set aside plenty of time to work out at The Campus Sports Complex while abroad. Based in Quinta Da Lago, the Campus is one of the most renowned sports complexes in Europe and regularly hosts elite athletes and teams, including the Irish Rugby team. Mulroy shared videos of himself working hard and getting in speed training, but was also at the venue at the same time as Hojlund, as the Manchester United star prepares for the upcoming Premier League season. Sharing a snap of the two of them, Mulroy said: "Trying to keep up with the big man." Although the footballing season finished earlier than Mulroy would have liked, he'll be pleased with his lot as he helped end a 68-year Leinster famine in the Wee County. They are interesting times in Louth with the county producing a plethora of underage talent, but senior boss Ger Brennan recently stepped away from the role and looks to be in line for the Dublin job. Hojlund will hope a new season brings new opportunities. Since moving to Old Trafford, the Danish international has had a tough two years, scoring just four league goals last season. The rumour mill continues to surround the 22-year-old, who has been linked with a move away from the club and could return to Italy this summer following Manchester United's spending on Matheus Cunha and continued links with Bryan Mbeumo.
