Three YouTube channels blocked for reports on developments in Dharmasthala
The interim order was issued on May 27, 2025, during the summer vacation of the court, with directions to issue emergent notices to the respondents.
However, the YouTube channels were blocked on July 10. H.V. Vasu of Eedina.com told The Hindu that they did not receive any notice before the channel was blocked. 'We got a notice on July 11, a day after YouTube blocked our channel. We will fight to preserve our right to free speech legally and approach the High Court on Monday,' he said.
Sanchari Studio Plus and Kudla Rampage Plus are the other two channels that were blocked.

Youth Congress workers stage protest before house of environmentalist
The construction curbs on the Neryamangalam-Valara stretch of the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway (NH85), connecting Munnar hill station to Ernakulam, have emerged as a political issue in the district, following a recent High Court order regarding the road construction. The High Court on Friday issued an order restricting the widening works on the 14.5 km stretch, which is at the intersection of the NH, on a petition filed by an Idukki-based environmentalist, M.N. Jayachandran. After the court order, protests erupted in the district. Various political parties and farmers' groups alleged that Mr. Jayachandran was trying to block development activities with the support of the Forest department. Youth Congress workers staged a protest in front of the house of Mr. Jayachandran. According to Congress leaders, the Youth Congress workers put up a blockade in front of his house at Thodupuzha on Sunday at 10 a.m. The protesters locked the gate of the house. The Youth Congress's former State secretary, M.A. Ansary, inaugurated the protest and said that if Mr. Jayachandran continues the anti-people interventions, the people will not allow him to leave the house. After the protest, the police arrived at the location and unlocked the gate. The members of Coexistence Collective, Kerala, a collective of environmentally conscious and concerned groups across Kerala, demanded action against the Youth Congress workers. 'Mr. Jayachandran has merely exercised his constitutional duty and civic responsibility by approaching the Court to prevent illegal activities in forest areas. Targeting such a petitioner is equivalent to attacking the rule of law, judicial independence, and environmental protection itself,' they said. Rasak Chooravelil, general convener of the Idukki Land Freedom Movement (ILFM), said that the interventions of Mr. Jayachandran resulted in blocking the development activities in the hilly district. 'An affidavit submitted by K.R. Jyothi Lal, Additional Chief Secretary to the Forest and Wildlife Department, stated that the area is a reserve forest, and it resulted in a construction curb order from the government. After the High Court in May 2024 ordered that the Forest Department should not interfere with the construction works of the road, the State government decided not to file an appeal against the order. We suspect that the Forest Department is behind the petition filed by Mr. Jayachandran,' he said. Meanwhile, Mr. Jayachandran said that he will not oppose the construction activities of the highway. 'The construction activities and tree felling were conducted on the reserve forest area without permission from the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), and I raised the issue before the court,' he said.

Kerala students to move Supreme Court over revised engineering rank list
Thiruvananthapuram: With engineering admissions in Kerala mired in controversy, a group of aggrieved students following the Kerala state syllabus is set to approach the Supreme Court, challenging the revised rank list prepared on the basis of the old normalisation formula as directed by the Kerala High Court. The students, who had initially ranked high in the merit list, have seen dramatic drop in their positions and allege denial of equal justice in the admission process. The student collective, which has been coordinating efforts via WhatsApp, is likely to file the petition in the apex court by Monday or Tuesday. "We were waiting for a copy of the High Court order to initiate legal steps," said Ajas Muhammad, who leads the collective. "What we will highlight in court is the denial of equal justice. Students who were among the toppers have dropped by thousands of ranks." The revised rank list, published by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations following the High Court judgment, has caused widespread concern among students from the Kerala and ICSE syllabi. Many have reported losing marks due to the reintroduction of the old normalisation formula. Some students who secured full marks in their Plus Two board exams reportedly lost up to 27 marks in the final normalised score. Complaints have also surfaced that students were not adequately informed about changes in subject weightages. The High Court had earlier quashed the previous rank list, which was prepared using a new normalisation formula, and directed that a fresh list be published in accordance with the February prospectus. Following this, the state government has announced that it will not challenge the judgment in the Supreme Court, prompting students to move independently. Meanwhile, with the admission process now entangled in legal proceedings, the Kerala government is set to request the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for an extension of the admission deadline beyond August 14. The first allotment based on option registration is scheduled for July 18, but uncertainty prevails over its implementation. Last year, the AICTE had extended the admission deadline to September 18, and the state hopes for a similar extension this year.

How Pakistani Handlers Used A Popular Mobile Game To Target Rajasthan Man
Bhilwara, Rajasthan: Like thousands of youngsters in India, Mohammed Sohail Bhishti from Rajasthan's Bhilwara was also a big fan of online gaming. The 23-year-old began playing the popular Free Fire -- a battle royale-style survival shooter mobile game that allows players from around the globe to interact with each other. Over the next few months, Sohail came in contact with other players, and thus began his spiral towards extremism. Sohail was arrested in September last year, and the chargesheet filed by Rajasthan's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has revealed details not just about Sohail but also foreign-linked online networks that are targeting Indians to spread their extremist ideologies. The ATS has formally presented its case in court, charging Sohail under Section 153A of the Indian Penal Code (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), which pertains to advocating or inciting unlawful activity. The court is set to begin hearings in the case on July 16. Gateway To Radicalisation Sohail's engagement with the online gaming platform led him into encrypted chat groups, many of which had associations with radical networks allegedly operating from Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. According to the ATS, Sohail became a member of over 60 such online groups and acted as an administrator in several of them. These groups operated under the guise of gaming forums but, according to the ATS, were spreading anti-India propaganda. It was within these networks that Sohail began corresponding with individuals operating Pakistani phone numbers. The chargesheet names contacts saved in his phone as "Hameed Mustafa", "Mahboob Ali", and "PK Rawalpindi". Authorities believe these individuals are associated with digital cells operating from across the border. 'Mujahid Mian' The ATS alleges that Sohail, using the alias 'Mujahid Mian', ran a YouTube channel that promoted inflammatory content, including visuals of Taliban fighters and protest footage related to the Babri Masjid, Jama Masjid, and the 2022 Amravati riots. Several videos, recovered from his devices by forensic teams, were said to contain communally charged content. In addition to YouTube, Sohail was active on other platforms, including Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). The forensic report submitted by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) on February 28 last year confirmed this. To mask his identity, Sohail is reported to have employed multiple mobile devices and SIM cards. He would activate a hotspot from one phone and use another to upload videos, ensuring his IP address was safe. Videos uploaded from one account were often 'liked' or 'boosted' using other accounts under his control, giving an artificial sense of reach and endorsement. According to the ATS, Sohail's radicalisation interacted with social media profiles claiming to be Pakistani women. The accounts used names suggestive of Islamic military ranks and referred to themselves as "commander" or "sister in arms". The conversations, conducted in English, reportedly included anti-India content. Sohail's Background Sohail lived in Shahpura, a semi-urban locality in Bhilwara district. His father works as a house painter. Sohail had studied till Class 12 in a government school and held a job at an auto parts shop with a monthly wage of Rs 8,000. His personal life was also on the cusp of change. He had become engaged to a woman from Madhya Pradesh, just 15 days before his arrest. There is no evidence so far to suggest that his immediate family or fiancee were aware of his online activities. Timeline of Inve stigation September 15, 2023: Sohail was arrested by ATS officers from his residence in Bhilwara following weeks of surveillance and digital monitoring. February 28, 2024: The Forensic Science Laboratory submitted its report detailing the contents of Sohail's mobile devices and digital footprint. March 11, 2024: The Rajasthan state government granted formal permission to prosecute Sohail under UAPA and IPC provisions, designating the case as sensitive. June 2, 2025: ATS submitted a detailed chargesheet to the Jaipur sessions court, comprising statements, forensic analysis, and digital evidence.
