'India supports a successful Chinese presidency at the SCO. Our bilateral relationship, as you have pointed out, has been steadily improving since the meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Xi Jinping in Kazan last October. I am confident that my discussions in this visit will maintain that positive trajectory,' Jaishankar told Han at the meeting.

He mentioned that the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is widely appreciated in India. 'We have marked, Excellency, the 75th anniversary of the establishment of our diplomatic relations. The resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is also widely appreciated in India. Continued normalisation of our ties can produce mutually beneficial outcomes,' the EAM averred.
Jaishankar discusses complex international situation with Chinese VP
During the talks, Jaishankar emphasised that the current international situation remains complex, insisting on greater cooperation among neighbours. 'The international situation, as we meet today, Excellency, is very complex. As neighbouring nations and major economies, an open exchange of views and perspectives between India and China is very important,' said.
The EAM maintained that India is looking forward to more such visits and discussions. It is pertinent to note that Jaishankar made a touchdown in China after concluding his visit to Singapore. What makes the visit significant is the fact that this was his first visit to China in five years after New Delhi and China decided to disengage after years of a standoff at the border.
The Indian External Affairs Minister is also scheduled to meet his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, for bilateral talks. The two diplomats last met in February on the sidelines of a G20 meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa.

In Manipur, Amit Shah recalls freedom fighter Hemam Neelmani Singh

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday recalled Manipur freedom fighter Hemam Neelmani Singh, a member of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's Indian National Army, as he was felicitated posthumously by the Bharat Vikas Parishad, with Shah as the chief guest at the event. Evading arrest till 1945, Shah said, Singh went back to Moirang after his release from jail in 1946, and engaged in social work. 'When I first went to Manipur, I saw youth conversing in Hindi. When I asked them how they could converse in Hindi so well, they recalled Heman Neelmani Singh, who worked for linguistic unity throughout his life,' he said. The Bharat Vikas Parishad is a voluntary organisation inspired by Swami Vivekanand that was initially set up as the Citizens Council by Suraj Prakash to mobilize citizen efforts against the Chinese attack of 1962. It was given its present name in 1963.

Defamation case: RaGa to appear in Lko court today

Lucknow: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi will appear in Lucknow's MP-MLA special magistrate court Tuesday in a case involving allegedly defamatory statements against the Indian Army made by him during his Bharat Jodo Yatra in Lucknow. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On Feb 1, the special court had summoned him as an accused, taking cognizance of a complaint filed in the defamation case. Rahul's advocate Pranshu Agarwal said after his appearance, bail will be sought from the court. The case was filed by retired BRO director Udai Shanker Srivastava, who alleged that Rahul had made derogatory comments in Lucknow on Dec 16, 2022, days after a face-off between Indian and Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh. Rahul had said, "People will ask about Bharat Jodo Yatra... but they will not ask a single question about China capturing 2,000sqkm of Indian land, killing 20 Indian soldiers, and thrashing our soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh... Don't pretend people don't know." Srivastava called the remarks "false and baseless", made with an "evil intention of demoralising the Indian Army and damaging public faith". He cited the Army's official Dec 12 statement, which described the Dec 9 clash in Arunachal as involving "minor injuries to a few personnel from both sides". Rahul had earlier filed a petition before HC's Lucknow bench against the summons, but was not granted relief. His lawyer had argued in HC that the case was politically driven and Srivastava lacked standing under section 199 CrPC, as the Army — not the petitioner — was the target. On May 29, Justice Subhash Vidyarthi rejected the claim, saying Srivastava was an "aggrieved person" under the law. HC had said Rahul must stand trial, observing a prima facie case exists against him. "Freedom of speech is subject to reasonable restrictions and does not include the freedom to make statements defamatory to any person or to the Indian Army," HC had noted.

Update: China, India should adhere to good-neighborliness, friendship: Chinese FM

BEIJING, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Monday that China and India should adhere to the direction of good-neighborliness and friendship, and find a way for mutual respect and trust, peaceful coexistence, common development and win-win cooperation. Wang made the remarks when holding talks with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in Beijing. As two major Eastern civilizations and major emerging economies living adjacent to each other, the essence of China-India relations lies in how to live in harmony and achieve mutual success, said Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. Last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached important consensus during their meeting in Kazan, pointing out the direction for the improvement and development of China-India relations, Wang said. Wang called on both sides to aim high, plan for the long term, adhere to the direction of good-neighborliness and friendship, and realize the "Dragon-Elephant Tango." Wang said that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and India, and the sustained improvement and growth of bilateral relations have not come easily, making them more valuable to cherish. Noting the relationship between the two countries is not directed against any third party, nor should it be disrupted by any third party, Wang called on both sides to build mutual trust rather than suspicion, pursue cooperation rather than competition, and seek mutual success rather than mutual attrition. China is willing to work with India to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, consistently enhance political mutual trust, meet each other halfway to expand exchanges and cooperation, act with consideration for the bigger picture to properly manage differences, and strengthen coordination via multilateral platforms such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), to promote the sustained, healthy, and steady development of China-India relations, Wang said. Wang said that President Xi proposed the building of a community with a shared future for humanity, and Prime Minister Modi advocated that "the world is one family," noting that these concepts are interrelated. Both sides support multilateralism and hope that the international order will develop in a more just and reasonable direction, Wang said. He added that China is willing to enhance communication and coordination with India, and jointly safeguard the multilateral trading system, the stability of the global industrial and supply chains, and an international environment of openness and cooperation. China is willing to work with India to promote an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization, and safeguard the common interests of the Global South to promote regional peace, stability, development and prosperity, Wang said. For his part, Jaishankar said that the Kazan meeting between the leaders of the two countries has provided important guidance for India-China relations, with bilateral exchanges and cooperation across various fields being normalized. He also expressed the appreciation for China's facilitation of the resumption of Indian pilgrimages to China's Xizang. Noting that India and China are development partners, not rivals, the Indian foreign minister said India is willing to view its relations with China from a long-term perspective, take the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties as an opportunity to focus on common interests, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, enhance people-to-people exchanges, and jointly safeguard peace and tranquility in the border regions. He called on both sides to work on positive factors in the bilateral relationship, so that the differences will not escalate into disputes, and competition will not turn into conflict. As India and China are important neighbors, populous countries, and major global economies, their relations carry regional and global significance, said Jaishankar. He added that India adheres to strategic autonomy and pursues an independent foreign policy. India stands ready to strengthen coordination and cooperation with China at the multilateral level to promote a multipolar world, Jaishankar noted. He also said that India fully supports China in successfully hosting the SCO summit as its rotating chair.
