Julian McMahon's ex-wife Dannii Minogue spoke about their marriage just a month before his tragic death

Daily Maila day ago
Julian McMahon 's first ex-wife Dannii Minogue coincidentally spoke out about their 18-month marriage five weeks before his tragic death, at age 56, following a secret cancer battle.
The Australian 53-year-old originally met the Australian-American hunk in 1990 while co-starring as Emma Jackson and Ben Lucini on the set of Seven Network soap opera, Home and Away.
Three years later, Dannii (born Danielle) enlisted Julian to play her boyfriend in her music videos for This Is It and This Is the Way before art imitated life and they tied the knot.
But Minogue never won over the approval of McMahon's late mother Lady Sonia, who didn't want her entering the political world dominated by his late father Sir Billy, the former Prime Minister of Australia.
'She thought that I was wanting to be part of that world [and] that I was going to take, take, take from them,' the I Kissed a Boy consultant-host recalled on How to Fail podcast on May 27.
'And it was the furthest thing from the truth and not what I wanted at all. So she made it very clear that I was not to be around and she didn't want me a part of anything. Yet Julian wanted me to be his wife.
'I knew that their [mother-son] relationship there was a lot had gone on and he loved and adored her, but they were not close in many ways. So it was a wild time. I mean, it was a lot to take on and that's how swept off my feet I was and thought that it could still work.'
The marriage began falling apart after The Residence actor moved to New York City to star in NBC soap opera Another World while Dannii flew back and forth from London.
'Each time I came back there was just something not right,' Minogue remembered.
'Things I saw in the apartment, there were people around that I didn't know, and he was just very very distant to the point that he called it off. But in the meantime, we'd run through all my money.'
The Thinking 'Bout Us singer said Julian 'was financially on his feet earning all of his money, keeping his money' while she was 'paying for everything.'
'So I was not only personally absolutely brokenhearted but I was broke. I had no money in the bank,' Dannii confessed.
'My family helped me out [with a loan] and then that was my job to heal my heart, to find some confidence in myself not being so stupid at choosing people around me that were not there to support me.'
In 1995 - the same year their divorce was finalized - Minogue needed money so badly she posed nude for the Australian edition of Playboy.
'I should have been at that position where I could pick and choose stuff,' the younger sister of Kylie Minogue explained.
'And now I couldn't with anything. So that was that was difficult.'
Dannii doesn't regret the 'dark and bleak' debacle because it gave her 'a toolbox' so she won't be 'that person' making 'those mistakes' in the future.
'It's nice to be able to look back now,' Minogue - who's been dating Swiss musician Adrian Newman since 2014 - concluded.
'I'm with a gorgeous partner and I absolutely love him.'
The I Kissed a Girl consultant-host welcomed 15-year-old son Ethan Edward Minogue Smith during her four-year relationship with babydaddy Kris Smith, which ended in 2012.
Dannii also previously dated America's Got Talent producer-host Simon Cowell, Greek shipping heir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, F1 driver Jacques Villeneuve, and Bros bassist Craig Logan.
Julian just celebrated his 11th wedding anniversary with third wife Kelly Paniagua on June 30, but they were together as far back 2003.
'With an open heart, I wish to share with the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon, died peacefully this week after a valiant effort to overcome cancer,' Kelly said in a statement.
'Julian loved life. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his work, and he loved his fans. His deepest wish was to bring joy into as many lives as possible. We ask for support during this time to allow our family to grieve in privacy. And we wish for all of those to whom Julian brought joy, to continue to find joy in life. We are grateful for the memories.'
McMahon is also survived by his 25-year-old daughter Madison Elizabeth McMahon from his two-year marriage to second ex-wife Brooke Burns, which ended in 2002.
The Surfer star is best remembered for his roles in CBS' FBI franchise, The WB's Charmed, and FX's Nip/Tuck.

The cast of The Castle don't look like this anymore! Stars of iconic film look unrecognisable in Today show segment

The Castle stars looked unrecognisable as they reunited on Wednesday, 28 years after the film hit Aussie screens in 1997. Stephen Curry, Michael Caton and Anthony Simcoe sat down with Nine's Today show on Wednesday to discuss their new gig - a partnership with Uber Green - while also reminiscing over the iconic '90s flick. The trio have all greyed since the film first premiered; however their humour hadn't changed a wink as they chatted to Richard Wilkins over a pint at The Bob Hawke Beer and Leisure Centre in Marrickville. Caton and Curry also now sport salt and pepper bushy beards and moustaches. Looking back on the iconic Aussie film, the trio couldn't believe how the film was still so relevant after all this time, especially considering it only took 11 days to film. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'All those lines from the film have become such a part of the vernacular that the next generation of people coming through don't even know they're quoting the film,' Stephen, 49, revealed. Reflecting on the film's popularity 28 years on, Caton, 81, said that no one could've predicted the cult status it achieved. 'We all knew it was a great script. Great scripts have come and gone and the films have done nothing. This, this just surprised us all,' he said. Simcoe, now 56, chimed in, saying: 'When it took off, I was almost in disbelief about the impact that it had. 'I'd done a few films before that and usually it's your girlfriend, your mum and dad and your next door neighbour who sees it. 'And here, all of a sudden, you've got something that people not only watched at the time, but to have something that people remember 25-something years later...' The Castle recently made its way back into headlines after critics of the 1997 film linked its plot about a blue-collar family trying to save their home from being acquired by developers to Australia's current housing crisis. Taking to X, a critic slammed the beloved hit comedy that made household names Eric Bana, Michael Caton and Stephen Curry. 'The film that did irreparable damage to urban planning in Australia,' complained the keyboard warrior about the film that launched one-liners like: 'Tell 'em they're dreamin'.' The angry critic then explained that the film was 'a convergence towards self entitlement and hypocrisy, a surrender to urban sprawl and sitting on a motorway two hours a day.' Another joined in the strange pile-on against the film. '[1997] Literally when the housing boom took off. Coincidence?' they added on the X thread. Originally released in 1997, The Castle is a comedy about a blue collar family who battle with developers. The ultra-low-budget film went on to gross $11 million at the Australian box office. The film's creators Rob Sitch, Santo Cilauro, Tom Gleisner, and Jane Kennedy later made another comedy classic The Dish, in 2000.

Footy WAG exposes VERY unusual rule in 'prenup' with her AFL star boyfriend: 'People think I'm kidding, but this is a huge no-no!'

Paris Tier, the girlfriend of AFL player Conor Stone, has sparked debate by revealing that the couple have a 'rental prenup' that includes a ban on him farting in front of her. Tier, who is very open about the pitfalls of life dating a professional athlete, has raised eyebrows by sharing some of the rules they obey around the house. 'Conor and I are moving in together, and while you guys might be thinking I'm dating Conor for money, I'm putting together a rental prenup,' she told her TikTok followers. A prenuptial agreement, sometimes called a prenup, is a contract that outlines how assets will be split up in case of divorce. However, Tier's contract with the 23-year-old GWS Giants player isn't just about protecting property - it's also about preserving their romance. 'If you're living together for two months and your boyfriend starts farting, that's going to de-romanticise the relationship a lot, which is something I don't really want to happen,' Tier explained. 'So I would write in the prenup, "I don't want you to fart in front of me".' Tier stressed the importance of setting boundaries, maintaining that flatulence is strictly off the table. The footy WAG's comments sparked some debate in the comments section. 'Go girl! All for transparency and setting boundaries,' replied one follower. 'The farting one is so real! My ex did this so much when we lived together it was a huge turn off,' another person posted. Tier replied, 'People think I'm kidding, but this is a huge no no for me!! 'While Conor may fart in front of me, it gives me the 'ick' when it's 24/7.' Another commenter described Tier as a 'fruitloop' while yet another suggested her boyfriend should 'run a mile'. Tier also spoke about the couple's financial agreement, touching on the reality of living with an athlete who 'eats the same amount as three people combined'. 'Obviously Conor makes a little bit more money than me, so Conor will pay for more things,' she said. 'Being in a relationship means you have to hold each other up and pull each other together. 'This prenup is just there to make sure that we are really holding each other together.'

QUENTIN LETTS: From the workshy to immigration, what Norman Tebbit dared to say 40 years ago is more pertinent today than it ever was

Perhaps the most surprising thing about Norman Tebbit, who has died aged 94, was that in younger days he was a commercial airline pilot. One expects pilots to be suave personalities, murmuring honeyed reassurance via the intercom and banking the aeroplane into a seamless descent before it touches down with a sough of squishy tyres.
