Public support crucial to eradicate drugs: Tirupati SP
Tirupati: A drug-free society can be achieved swiftly if every citizen pledges their support, said Tirupati district Superintendent of Police (SP) V Harshavardhan Raju. He was speaking at 'Maththu Vadalara 3K Run', jointly organised by the Tirupati district police and 92.7 Big FM. The awareness run saw participation from people of all age groups, from young children to senior citizens. The 3-kilometre event began at Poorna Kumbham circle near Tirupati Bus Stand and concluded at Timminaidu Palem.
Addressing the gathering, SP Harshavardhan Raju highlighted the state government's continued efforts to eliminate drug abuse in Andhra Pradesh. He said multiple initiatives are underway to build a drug-free state, including the establishment of a special task force named Eagle, which has been instrumental in identifying and raiding drug and ganja hubs across the State.
He stressed that the present generation should be the last to witness the scourge of drugs. 'Future generations should not even see or hear of drugs,' he said.
He urged every citizen to support the police in eradicating drug use and trafficking, starting from this very moment.
SP Raju also appealed to the public to promptly report any instances of drug use or sale. 'It is not enough to stay silent. If you know something, say something,' he urged. He emphasised that the state government has set up a dedicated helpline number 1972, for people to report such activities anonymously and without fear.
The SP assured full confidentiality to those who provide information.
He congratulated every participant in the 3K Run and representatives of 92.7 Big FM acknowledging their active role in spreading awareness and standing against drug abuse. Additional SP Ravi Manoharachari, DSP Bhaktavatsalam, East PS CI Srinivasulu and others were present.

International drug cartel busted, 60 kg heroin seized from Barmer
Chandigarh: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, Amritsar Commissionerate Police, with the support of Border Security Force (BSF) and Rajasthan Police, has busted a major international drug cartel being operated by Pakistan-based smuggler Tanveer Shah and Canada-based handler Joban Kaler, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Monday. A huge consignment of 60.302 kg of heroin was recovered from near the International Border in Barmer in Rajasthan. The operation has led to the arrest of at least nine people, including smugglers, traffickers and hawala operators from Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir, said the DGP. Those arrested have been identified as Gagandeep Singh (23), Jashanpreet Singh (20), Gursahib Singh (25), Rajeev Panjgotra (29), Somnath (62), Prashotam Singh (50), Kulwinder Singh (24), Rajinder Kaur (42) and one hawala operator. DGP Yadav said preliminary investigations have revealed the drug cartel was being operated by Pakistan-based smuggler Tanveer Shah and Canada-based smuggler Joban Kaler with the help of local kingpin Gursahib Singh, who was already lodged in Goindwal Sahib Jail, from where he was running the network. His phone has been recovered by jail authorities, and his production warrant was obtained for a probe into Canada-Pakistan linkages, the DGP said. Sharing more details, Commissioner of Police (Amritsar) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the operation began after Gursahib Singh was arrested last month with one kg of heroin from Chheharta. Despite being in jail, accused Gursahib operated through his nephew Jashanpreet Singh and associate Gagandeep Singh, who were arrested with 102 gm heroin. Their interrogation led to the huge 60 kg heroin consignment in Barmer, he said. He said during the investigation, the hawala network used for routing drug money has also been exposed with the arrest of a hawala operator. The Commissioner of Police said the probe has also revealed that drugs were being smuggled from across the Indo-Pak border and routed through Rajasthan to Punjab, with further local distribution channels. Further working on backward linkages, five more accused associated with Tanveer Shah of Pakistan were also identified, and raids are being conducted to nab them, he said.

Man Befriends Rajasthan Woman, Promises Luxury In Oman, Cops Foil Trafficking Bid
A 35-year-old man living in Muscat, Oman, met an 18-year-old woman from Rajasthan's Churu online. Soon, he befriended her and 'promised' the woman a luxurious life in Oman, but little did she know that the man allegedly plotted to sell her off in the Gulf country. But the cops rescued the woman 30 minutes before she was ready to fly to Oman. The man, Mohammad Islam, convinced the woman to come to Oman. He helped her obtain a passport and booked her a seat on an Air India flight from Delhi to Muscat. The woman, who was in love with the man, even took Rs 1 lakh cash and jewellery before leaving for Delhi to catch the flight. Superintendent of Police Jai Yadav said the woman is a resident of the Taranagar area in Churu and is a final-year college student. The officer said, "The woman left her house at 8:30 am on Saturday without informing anyone. Her family members were looking for her. They (cops) were informed at 5 pm. When the police started investigating, they found that she was at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. In such a situation, the police sought cooperation from the embassy and the Delhi Police to rescue her. She was ready to board the plane." "With the help of immigration, the embassy and the Delhi Police, she was found," he added. The District Superintendent of Police said that after receiving the information, the Churu police did not have time to reach Delhi. If the operation had been delayed by half an hour, she would have left for the Gulf. Police officer, Gaurav Khidiya, said that the accused, Mohammad Islam, is a resident of Mulat, Taranagar. He is married and lives in Oman. He has been there for 10 years, and his wife left him. Islam befriended the woman on social media eight months ago. The police are now preparing to bring the accused from Oman.

Row over murder case deepens in Pathanamthitta
The Pathanamthitta district police have found themselves at the centre of yet another controversy, this time over the appointment of a special public prosecutor in a sensational murder case. The dispute, which has erupted between District Police Chief V.G. Vinod Kumar and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Madhu Babu, currently serving in Alappuzha, stems from a complaint filed by the latter with the Chief Minister. The complaint alleges intervention by the DPC in appointing an individual, reportedly listed in the police rowdy sheet, as the special public prosecutor in the 2013 murder case. Mr. Babu, who had previously served as the Circle Inspector in Pathanamthitta during the initial investigation of the case, claimed that the appointment was driven by personal motives. In a sharp counter, the DPC has publicly accused the DySP of mishandling the early stages of the investigation and even suggested that Mr. Babu feared being named as an accused for alleged evidence tampering. The case in question involves the murder of Biju M. Joseph, a cashier at Karikineth Silks, who was killed on November 5, 2013. Despite the gravity of the crime, the chargesheet was filed only in 2015. The victim's brothers, Sabu M. Joseph and Baby M. Joseph, had later approached the High Court, alleging undue influence by the accused and requesting the appointment of a special public prosecutor to ensure a fair trial. Acting on their petition, the High Court selected one of three proposed candidates for the role of special prosecutor. The court also observed that, under Section 319 of the CrPC, individuals found to be involved in evidence tampering could be added as accused, if warranted. The controversy escalated after allegations emerged that Mr. Babu, then the investigating officer, had attempted to protect the accused. He was subsequently replaced and a new deputy superintendent took over the case and eventually filed the chargesheet. 'It was out of fear of facing action that the Deputy Superintendent came forward with such a complaint. The reports suggesting that I recommended a person with a rowdy background for the prosecutor's role are completely untrue,' Mr. Vinod Kumar stated. Meanwhile, the lawyer at the centre of the storm, Prashanth V. Kurup, has strongly denied all allegations. Talking to the media, Mr. Kurup claimed that the cases against him were fabricated and clarified that his appointment was made based on a High Court recommendation, following the petition by the victim's family.
