Trump says he wants to deport 'the worst of the worst' but government data tells another story
But government data around ongoing detentions tells a different story.
There has been an increase of arrests by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement since Trump began his second term, with reports of raids across the country. Yet the majority of people currently detained by ICE have no criminal convictions. Of those who do, relatively few have been convicted of high-level crimes — a stark contrast to the chilling nightmare Trump describes to support his border security agenda.
'There's a deep disconnect between the rhetoric and the reality,' said Ahilan Arulanantham, co-faculty director of the UCLA Law School's Center for Immigration Law and Policy. 'This administration, and also in the prior Trump administration, they consistently claim to be going after the worst of the worst and just talk about immigration enforcement as though it is all about going after violent, dangerous people with extensive criminal histories. And yet overwhelmingly, it's people they're targeting for arrest who have no criminal history of any kind.'
A look at the numbers
The latest ICE statistics show that as of June 29, there were 57,861 people detained by ICE, 41,495 — 71.7% — of whom had no criminal convictions. That includes 14,318 people with pending criminal charges and 27,177 who are subject to immigration enforcement, but have no known criminal convictions or pending criminal charges.
Each detainee is assigned a threat level by ICE on a scale of 1 to 3, with one being the highest. Those without a criminal record are classified as having 'no ICE threat level.' As of June 23, the latest data available, 84% of people detained at 201 facilities nationwide were not given a threat level. Another 7% had been graded as a level 1 threat, 4% were level 2 and 5% were level 3.

'It is a miracle that President Trump survived,' Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, the committee's chairman, said in the report. 'What happened was inexcusable, and the consequences imposed so far do not reflect the severity of the situation.' The findings were released on the one-year mark of the shooting, which jolted the 2024 presidential campaign. Trump, who was grazed in the ear, moments later raised his fist and chanted, 'Fight, fight' — an image his campaign capitalized on. According to the Secret Service, six agents were suspended for up to 42 days without pay. The committee probe, which included 17 interviews and more than 75,000 pages of documents, showed that repeated requests for additional security were either denied or left unfulfilled in the months before. Numerous questions remain about the shooting, including Crooks' motivation. Democrats on the committee did not immediately comment on the report. Just 25 minutes before Crooks fired toward Trump, local law enforcement reported a suspicious man carrying a rangefinder outside the rally perimeter. But the Senate report says a Secret Service supervisory agent failed to broadcast the warning over the agency's radio network, and the message failed to reach agents on Trump's protective detail. The report found significant gaps in how agents were briefed. One counter-sniper assigned to the Butler rally testified he had not been told about any intelligence suggesting a potential long-range threat. That agent chose not to report a suspicious person because he assumed someone else would act. 'I'm not the only one that's observing that area,' the sniper told investigators. 'Someone else could've also put out the radio call.'

Sambhaji Brigade leader Pravin Gaikwad manhandled in Solapur for remarks against Swami Samarth
Sambhaji Brigade founding member Pravin Gaikwad was manhandled and ink was hurled on him allegedly by activists of an organisation over his reported remarks on Swami Samarth in Akkalkot village in Solapur district on Sunday (July 13, 2025), police said. Mr. Gaikwad alleged that he was targeted over his "progressive thoughts" by followers of Hindutva ideology. A viral video shows Mr. Gaikwad being pulled out of his car and manhandled by a group of people in the afternoon. "While Gaikwad was in his car, Shivdharm Foundation supporters staged protests, threw black ink on him and also tried to vandalise his car," an official said. Mr. Gaikwad had come to Akkalkot, widely known for its association with Swami Samarth, who is believed to be a reincarnation of Shree Dattatreya, to attend a felicitation ceremony organised by an educational institute and Sakal Maratha Samaj. The protesters also objected to Mr. Gaikwad's terming Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj as 'Sambhaji'. They demanded that the Sambhaji Brigade be renamed as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Brigade, the official said. Police booked Deepak Kate and six other members of Shivdharm Foundation under sections 115 (2), 189, 190, and 191 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for rioting and detained them. They were later allowed to go after the police served them notices. Mr. Gaikwad alleged it was an attempt to kill him for his "progressive thoughts". "I had gone to Akkalkot and suddenly members of the Shiv Dharma Foundation smeared black, sticky oil on me. They attacked me and tried to kill me. You may recall the murders of Dr Pansare, Kalburgi, Dr Dabholkar and Gauri Lankesh. In the current regime, activists with progressive thoughts are unsafe," he alleged while talking to reporters. "Sometimes there are attempts to break political parties. Then there are attempts to divide activists. When all such attempts fail, such attacks are carried out. We work with an ideology rooted in truth. Our thinking is aligned with the Constitution," Mr. Gaikwad added. The Sambhaji Brigade is working for humanity but, unfortunately, some misconceptions are spread about social organisations, following which those claiming to follow the Hindutva ideology carry out such attacks, he claimed. Sambhaji Brigade, a Maratha outfit, is named after Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, son of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It had gained exposure in 2004 for allegedly attacking and vandalising the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune, claiming that it helped American scholar James Laine's book on Shivaji Maharaj, certain parts of which were unacceptable to them. "Ideological opposition should be expressed through ideas. This path of violence is highly condemnable and deplorable," NCP (SP) MP Amol Kolhe said. His colleague and MLA Jitendra Awhad offered support to Mr. Gaikwad by calling him a "champion of progressive thoughts" and "a fighter".

Trump says U.S. will send Patriot missiles to Ukraine
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday (July 13, 2025) he will send Patriot air defense missiles to Ukraine, saying they are necessary to defend the country because Russian President Vladimir Putin "talks nice but then he bombs everybody in the evening." Mr. Trump did not give a number of Patriots he plans to send to Ukraine, but he said the United States would be reimbursed for their cost by the European Union. The U.S. President has grown increasingly disenchanted with Mr. Putin because the Russian leader has resisted Mr. Trump's attempts to negotiate a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asked for more defensive capabilities to fend off a daily barrage of missile and drone attacks from Russia. "We will send them Patriots, which they desperately need, because Putin really surprised a lot of people. He talks nice and then bombs everybody in the evening. But there's a little bit of a problem there. I don't like it," Mr. Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews outside of Washington. "We basically are going to send them various pieces of very sophisticated military equipment. They are going to pay us 100% for that, and that's the way we want it," Mr. Trump said. He plans to meet NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to discuss Ukraine and other issues this week.
