Rays trade catcher Danny Jansen to his hometown Brewers for minor league infielder

NEW YORK (AP) — Veteran catcher Danny Jansen was traded by the Tampa Bay Rays to his hometown Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night for minor league infielder Jadher Areinamo.
Jansen was in Tampa Bay's original lineup against the New York Yankees but was pulled about 45 minutes before the first pitch. The trade was announced shortly after the Rays ended a four-game losing streak with a 4-2 win at Yankee Stadium.
Jansen said he found out about the deal after meeting with manager Kevin Cash and president of baseball operations Erik Neander.
'I was getting ready to play the game, and I understand that side of baseball,' Jansen said. 'Just grateful for the time spent here with the guys.'
The Rays signed Jansen to an $8.5 million, one-year contract on Dec. 13. He batted .204 with 11 homers and 29 RBIs in 73 games for the Rays.
Jansen grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin. He is joining the NL Central leaders to serve as a backup to William Conteras, who is playing through a fractured finger. Conteras is hitting .245 with six homers and 42 RBIs in 100 games.
'I don't live too far,' Jansen said. 'That's going to be something that my wife and I had never experienced.'
Jansen was moved right around the MLB trade deadline for the second straight season.
Toronto dealt him to Boston on July 24, 2024, and he wound up playing for both teams in a game at Fenway Park that got suspended June 26 and resumed two months later.
'Having gone through a trade last year will probably make this process a little bit easier for me going into a team as a catcher learning pitchers and all that,' Jansen said. 'So, looking forward to the challenge and task at hand with that. I think having a little bit of experience helps.'
Areinamo batted .297 with 11 homers and 51 RBIs in 94 games for Class A Wisconsin of the Midwest League and has appeared at third base, shortstop and second base. Last season, he hit .301 in 110 games for Wisconsin.
The Rays are 8-18 in their last 26 games following a 25-9 stretch from May 20 to June 26. Tampa Bay is 2 1/2 games back of the final wild-card spot in the American League.

Fantasy Football Draft Rankings 2025: Justin Boone's Top Running Backs

Justin Boone won the FantasyPros Most Accurate Expert Award in 2019 and has eight top-10 finishes in the competition. He now brings his rankings acumen to the Yahoo Fantasy audience after recently joining the team as an analyst. He will consistently be refining his draft rankings during training camps, the preseason and leading up to the season. When news breaks, rankings updates will be reflected here, so bookmark this page and get ready for your drafts! And be sure to follow the links below to see his latest redraft rankings at every position. Latest RB Updates Omarion Hampton was always a top-20 fantasy back in my redraft rankings, but he's moved up into low-end RB1 territory now that Najee Harris is missing time due to an eye injury. Harris has been at training camp in street clothes, sporting a hoodie and sunglasses to protect the eye and perhaps to hide it from any onlookers. The longer he sits out, the more time Hampton has to impress coaches and distance himself from the veteran — and that's exactly what he's doing, according to everyone in and around the team, and he received early touches in the Hall of Fame preseason game. There's a reason why the Chargers used a first-round pick on Hampton and fantasy managers should continue investing, even if it requires a third-round pick to draft him now. There was always something strange about the way the Texans discussed Joe Mixon's recovery throughout the offseason. A clear timeline was never provided and the signing of Nick Chubb added doubt to the entire situation. Now we know Mixon will miss multiple weeks of training camp with a foot injury and the team is 'hoping' he'll be ready for Week 1, according to Jordan Schultz. Even after a surprisingly strong performance for Houston last season, it's going to be very difficult to draft Mixon with any confidence over the next month. For the time being, I've dropped Mixon down into the RB3 range, while moving Chubb and rookie Woody Marks up as intriguing late-round selections. The Jaguars' backfield seems to be an open competition between Travis Etienne Jr., Tank Bigsby and Bhayshul Tuten. It's no surprise to see the veterans getting more work at the start of camp, but Bigsby earning the bulk of the carries in the early going is worth noting. New Jags coach Liam Coen showed us last year in Tampa that he's willing to let the best man win the job, when he promoted a Day 3 rookie in Bucky Irving into the starting role, so anyone could emerge in Jacksonville this season. While the uncertainty can be frustrating, I still find myself taking chances on Tuten and Bigsby at their very late ADPs. Latest QB Updates While it's important to follow the latest news coming out of training camps, let me preach some caution about overreacting to reports about players' performances in practice. If the drumbeat is consistent, it can definitely turn into a reality when the regular season comes around, but most players will have good and bad days this time of year. So when you hear about young quarterbacks like Caleb Williams or J.J. McCarthy throwing interceptions in practice, don't panic. Williams is learning a new system under Ben Johnson and this is McCarthy's first opportunity to be the No. 1 QB for the Vikings after missing last season due to injury. I'm still projecting both players to flirt with low-end QB1 fantasy numbers in 2025. Let's also not overreact to players leaving practice due to injuries. Some people seemed ready to write Justin Fields off for the season when he was carted off last week with a toe issue, but the Jets QB is already back at practice and not expected to miss any time. He remains a low-end QB1 in my projections. I'm monitoring the Matthew Stafford situation a little closer, since he's dealt with back ailments in the past and is being called week-to-week. But we've got more than a month until the season kicks off, so Stafford has plenty of time to get right. The chance of this popping back up in the season is concerning though, which keeps him down in the low-end QB2 range for fantasy. 2025 Fantasy Rankings (Half PPR) QB | RB | WR | TE | DEF | K | Top 300 Quarterbacks 2025 Fantasy Rankings (Half PPR) QB | RB | WR | TE | DEF | K | Top 300

Raiders puzzling offensive line shuffle takes another weird turn

The Las Vegas Raiders have shuffled their starting offensive line throughout training camp, but it took a weird turn on Friday. According to Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Raiders had Jackson Powers-Johnson with the second team at right guard during Friday's practice. Dylan Parham and Alex Cappa served as the starters at guard for the first team on Friday, per Tashan Reed of The Athletic. Powers-Johnson, who started 14 games during his rookie campaign in 2024 and was solid, was initially competing for the starting center spot with Jordan Meredith in camp. However, the coaching staff has moved him to guard in recent days, and it looks like he was demoted to the second team on Friday. Though Las Vegas could be shuffling the offensive line to give reps to the depth piece, it's odd that Powers-Johnson is constantly switching between the starters and backups. The 22-year-old seemed like a lock to be a starter on the offensive line, but he could be competing for a spot on the unit. In 15 games last year, Powers-Johnson played 535 snaps at guard and 421 snaps at center. The Oregon product allowed just two sacks and 23 quarterback pressures, and was also a stout run blocker. A second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Powers-Johnson is expected to be a future building block on the Raiders' offensive line, but the recent rotations on the group signal that he could be fighting for a chance to start on the interior.
