"Dude, Why Didn't You Tell Me That On The First Day?": Ricky Rubio On Lakers Legend Pau Gasol's Advice To Him Late In His NBA Career
Ricky Rubio recently appeared on the "Lo de Evolve" show and reflected on his life and career in a deep dive into his past, like his dark thoughts and how other people helped him out in his career. Among the people he mentioned, one of the prominent names that popped up in the conversation was that of the Lakers legend Pau Gasol, who was also his teammate for the Spanish National Team from 2008 to 2021.
Rubio spoke about how Gasol became a standard of measurement for himself and that his primary goal was to have a better career than Gasol. He also revealed that a little late in his career, he got some noteworthy advice from his teammate.
"For me, nothing was enough. One of the people I've looked up at most was Pau Gasol. I thought I had to get past his career. I want to now ask him if he had a good time on his journey on this path.'
"And one of the things I asked him now, too late, I told him that when I went out on the court, I thought it was the worst, and through there I found the motivation. And he said he thought he was the best."
"Dude, why didn't you tell me that on the first day?" said Rubio as he chuckled.
[Aforementioned quotes have been translated from Spanish to English]
Gasol believed that one should be overconfident to find the motivation to be effective when it matters the most. Meanwhile, Rubio believed an underdog mindset helped him find his fuel for motivation.
Rubio always compared himself to Gasol despite being teammates for 13 years. Gasol is arguably the best Spanish basketball player to have played in NBA history. He averaged 17.0 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 3.2 assists in his career across 18 seasons. The two-time NBA champion was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in 2023.
Meanwhile, despite Rubio's successes on the international level, his NBA career never came close to what Gasol ended up achieving in his career. He averaged 10.8 points, 7.4 assists, and 4.1 rebounds in the 12 seasons he played in the NBA. He never won a championship, let alone had any personal achievements like the MVP Award or any All-Star selections.
Therefore, this difference in mindset clearly yielded different results for both the Spanish players, and now Rubio hilariously feels that if Gasol had given him the advice sooner, Rubio's career may have ended differently. Do you think a mindset change was what Rubio needed to excel in his career? Truro City FC rising up the English soccer ladder with Canadian helping hand
Eric Perez brought pro rugby league to Canada in the form of the Toronto Wolfpack. Now the Toronto native is helping Truro City FC climb the ranks in English soccer. Truro City is already on the move, having won the National League South title to become the first club ever from Cornwall in the southwest tip of England to win promotion to the National League, the fifth tier of English football. The club, founded in 1889, has already come a long way. 'We took over this club and it was averaging 75 diehard fans a game,' said Perez, who is Truro City's chairman and CEO. 'It was playing an hour and a half away in Plymouth. It hadn't been home for years. One of the previous owners had sold the (football) ground … And when we took it over (in November 2023), it was second to last in the table. 'Fast forward to now and we just got promoted to the National League, we've got our own ground (in Truro) — we averaged almost 1,990 fans a game this year, multiple sellouts as well. And we won the league with a much lower budget than some of the other teams.' The next goal is to get the team into League 2, the bottom tier of the English Football League which operates under the Premier League. Perez, who had ties to the region in a previous role as chairman of the Cornwall RLFC rugby league club, led a Canadian consortium in purchasing Truro City from Kernow Sport, who also owns the Cornish Pirates rugby union team. Looking at the region, he saw an opportunity for the soccer team if he could get it back in front of its home fans. 'To be fair, the fans showed up in their droves from the first game on,' he said. 'It was not like we had to slowly win them over. They were so happy to have their club back in Truro. It had been gone for four years. 'They showed up and they kept showing up all season.' Perez says the ownership consortium numbers around a dozen and is mainly comprised of Canadians, mostly from Toronto, with some Americans. 'People I have known for most of my life,' he said. Promotion came down to the final round of matches, with Truro heading into the weekend atop on goal difference and the title up for grabs among the top six. But Truro defeated St Albans City 5-2 on April 26 before a record crowd of 3,597 at the Truro Community Stadium to seal the deal, finishing ahead of Torquay United on goal difference of just two goals to secure the lone automatic promotion place. Fans invaded the pitch after the final whistle. 'Unbridled elation,' said Perez. 'Nobody, nobody thought we could do this. Nobody.' Truro wasted little time on Decision Day, racing into a 3-0 lead after just 10 minutes. Truro's success even drew kudos in the House of Commons. 'I start by congratulating Truro City football club, who have gone from homelessness to league champions in one season,' Jayne Kirkham, Labour MP for Truro and Falmouth, told the House on April 30. 'Can I add my congratulations to Truro,' added Prime Minister Keir Starmer. In an open letter to supporters the day after promotion was secured, Perez called it 'a historic moment in the proud history of Truro City Football Club, a moment that belongs to every single one of you.' Truro begins pre-season play Wednesday against League One's Plymouth Argyle ahead of its opening game in the National League on Aug. 9 at Wealdstone FC. At home, 800 seats have been added to the Truro stadium, upping the capacity to 4,100. Other teams in the Enterprise National League, as it is known, include Aldershot Town, Carlisle United, Hartlepool United, Rochdale and Scunthorpe United. 'We do have a lot of work cut out for us but we were favoured to go down this year,' said Perez. Half the playing roster was professional and the other half semi-pro last season. This season, all the players will be pros. Perez was a founder of Toronto Wolfpack, eventually stepping away in a bid to establish a second rugby league side in Ottawa before the pandemic put paid to the plan. The Wolfpack made it to the top tier of English rugby league but folded in 2020 after standing down during the Super League season, saying it could not afford to play the remainder of the season with the pandemic preventing games from being played in Canada. —- This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 13, 2025.

Grace Kim with a stunning finish wins Evian Championship for her first major
EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France (AP) — Grace Kim delivered one stunning shot after another Sunday in the Evian Championship, starting with an eagle to force a playoff and another eagle to beat Jeeno Thitikul on the second extra hole to make her first LPGA win a major title. Kim, whose 2-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th in regulation gave her a 4-under 67, looked to be just as surprised as everyone else when she rolled in a 12-foot eagle putt to win the playoff. The 24-year-old Australian calmly placed her hand over her mouth and stood still before doubling over and breaking into a wide smile. Thitikul's biggest challenge had been English amateur Lottie Woad, who was coming off a win in the Irish Women's Open and at one point had the lead on the back nine of Evian Resort. She closed with 64 and then waited to see if that would be enough. Woad was bidding to become the first amateur to win a major since Catherine Lacoste at the 1967 U.S. Women's Open. Thitikul birdied the 17th to take the lead, and the Thai player was on the verge of her first major when she laid up short of the pond and hit wedge into 8 feet on the final hole. But there was Kim, blasting a fairway metal onto the green. The ball rolled back down the slope to 2 feet for eagle to tie for the lead. Thitikul's birdie putt for the title missed right. She shot 67 and joined Kim at 14-under 270, one ahead of Woad and Minjee Lee (68). Back to the 18th in the playoff, Thitikul again looked like a winner when Kim's second shot bounced on a cart path, over some rocks and into the pond. Thitikul was just left of the green in two. Kim took her penalty drop, then chipped in for birdie across the green. Thitikul had to make an 8-foot birdie putt to extend the playoff, which she did. Playing the 18th for the third time, Kim again delivered another beauty over the pond and onto the green to about 12 feet. Thitikul, who had tiny insects buzzing around her ball in the collar of a bunker, chipped weakly to about 6 feet. She could only watch as Kim ended it with an eagle. That extended what already is a record streak in the LPGA Tour's 75-year history, the 18th consecutive tournament to start a season with a different winner. It also makes 13 different winners in the last 13 majors.

Suns' Devin Booker, Kevin Durant reunite at Drake show in London
The post Suns' Devin Booker, Kevin Durant reunite at Drake show in London appeared first on ClutchPoints. Their time together at the Phoenix Suns may have ended, but Kevin Durant and Devin Booker continue to be close to each other. The two were recently spotted vibing together at a Drake concert in London. Advertisement The American rapper recently performed as part of the Wireless Festival held from July 11-13 at Finsbury Park in London. Among the thousands of fans gathered at the concert were former teammates KD and Booker, who appear to remain strong despite the former's recent trade to the Houston Rockets. The two can be seen enjoying and singing to the music among a sea of fans with Drake performing onstage. Both players have previously featured in multiple Drake songs and are known to be fans of the rapper. The two also won the gold medal together at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and have an obvious mutual respect that has survived the untimely breakup. Their on-court chemistry had blossomed in their first season together when Durant joined from the Brooklyn Nets back in 2023. Booker has spent his entire NBA career with the Suns thus far after being drafted 13th overall at the 2015 draft. The two formed a 'Big 3' alongside Bradley Beal, but the team enjoyed moderate success despite all players producing decent individual numbers. Advertisement The Suns finished 6th in the 2023-24 season, with Durant producing 27.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and five assists per game and Booker averaging 27.1 points and 6.9 assists per game. However, an injury-affected last campaign saw them finish 11th with a 36-46 record. That resulted in a historic seven-team trade that saw Durant leave for the Houston Rockets earlier this month. Beal is also understood to be close to agreeing a buy-out with multiple teams showing interest. The Suns are now expected to kickstart a rebuild around Devin Booker despite the difficult salary cap situation they are currently traversing through. KD, on the other hand, will attempt to help the Rockets emerge as serious title contenders next season.
