
Alstom bags €135 million contract for Chennai Metro Phase II, ET Infra

French transport company Alstom has secured a contract worth €135 million (approximately ₹1,321 crore) from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) for Phase II of the city's metro project. PTI has reported that the deal includes the design, manufacture, supply, testing, and commissioning of 96 Metropolis metro cars Under the contract, Alstom will supply 32 three-car trainsets. The company will also provide 15 years of maintenance services after the warranty period. This will include cleaning, obsolescence management, and upkeep of plant and machinery at the depot.The metro trains will be manufactured at Alstom's facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, aligning with the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. Each trainset can carry around 900 passengers and is designed for multiple unit operations. They will include evacuation features for train-to-train and train-to-track scenarios.The 119-km Phase II network will have three corridors, covering more than 76 km of elevated track and 43 km underground.Olivier Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India, said, 'This new contract strengthens our association with CMRL in helping modernise Chennai's urban rail mobility landscape.'Alstom is currently producing 108 driverless Metropolis cars for another section of Phase II, connecting Poonamallee Bypass to Light House through 30 stations — 18 elevated and 12 underground.Since its first contract with CMRL in 2010, Alstom has delivered 208 metro cars for Phase I of the project.

Revving up: Renault gets keys to Nissan's TN plant
CHENNAI: Four months after Renault Group announced its intent to buy out Nissan's 51% stake in joint India plant RNAIPL (Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd), the French auto major has completed the acquisition and become sole owner of the Oragadam/Chennai facility. 'India is a key market for Renault Group and also plays a vital role in our global R&D footprint. With full ownership of our plant in Chennai, we now have all the means to accelerate in India,' said François Provost, CEO of Renault Group. The acquisition is part of Renault Group 'accelerating its development in India' said the company in a statement. Renault Group has just named Stephane Deblaise as its CEO for India effective Sept 1, 2025 to lead the next phase of the French auto major's India strategy. Since its launch in 2010, the Chennai plant has produced more than 2.8 million vehicles — including 1.2 million exported to more than 100 countries — as well as 4.6 million engines and gearboxes. Supported by nearly 300 local suppliers, the plant has an annual production capacity of more than 400,000 vehicles; it is currently using nearly 50% capacity. Novak Djokovic acquires stake in French club Le Mans; former F1 drivers Magnussen, Massa co-owners too
Novak Djokovic became a part-owner of French Ligue 2 side Le Mans FC with former Formula 1 drivers Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen also acquiring stakes, the club on Friday. The investment is led by Brazilian group OutField, an international consortium co-founded by Pedro Olivera, and includes Georgios Frangulis, CEO of global health-food brand OakBerry. 'Djokovic, the most successful player in history, whose mental strength and unique approach will bring considerable added value,' the club said in a statement. 'Massa (15 seasons in Formula 1) and Magnussen (10 seasons), who will help create a bridge between football and motorsport – a distinctive strength of the Le Mans brand.' 'I think everyone knows my passion for football, which is leading me to take this step today.
