WEF ASEAN 2025 Highlights Regional Resolution On Women's Empowerment
ASEAN WEF 2025 president Dr Hartini Osman said the resolutions represent a bold, actionable roadmap for ASEAN nations to empower women through targeted leadership, education, innovation and policy integration.
'The outcomes of this forum are crucial in realising the aspirations of women across ASEAN and globally to advance empowerment, to give voice to those often unheard, and to carry a collective mandate forward.
'These resolutions will be brought to the attention of the Prime Minister and the relevant ministers to support the development of gender-related policies that are inclusive, effective and responsive to women's real needs,' she told reporters after the closing ceremony of WEF ASEAN 2025 at Dewan Perdana, Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) today.
The forum themed 'Women Leaders Beyond Borders: Shaping the Future of the ASEAN Sheconomy', which started on June 19, was officially closed by Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad, alongside Women Economic Forum founder and president Dr Harbeen Arora Rai.
The closing ceremony also witnessed the official handing over of the WEF ASEAN 2025 resolutions to Dr Harbeen as well as the symbolic passing of the baton by Hartini to the Philippines, which will host the next edition of the WEF forum in October 2026.
According to Hartini, the resolution is structured across four key dimensions, beginning with 'Inner Power', which focuses on empowering women from within through leadership, education and innovation, while the second dimension, 'Inclusion' promotes equitable and sustainable economic growth.
The third dimension, 'Integration', emphasises cultural, digital, and policy integration for Sheconomy Growth whereas the fourth dimension, 'Innovation', calls for improved global connectivity and visibility of Sheconomy in post-normal times.
The forum gathered 614 participants from 33 countries, supported by four advisory board members, nine ASEAN advisors, and three ministries; the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development and the Health Ministry.

US tariff cut benefits Malaysia SMEs, says Penang CM Chow
GEORGE TOWN: The tariff reduction for Malaysia, from 25 per cent to 19 per cent, is seen as a good step forward and comes as a positive achievement and a relief for many, said Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. The chief minister said that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) might remain exposed in the new tariff environment, and hoped that the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) would continue negotiating for better deals for these businesses. 'We hope MITI will continue negotiating better deals and prepare for the possible impact, especially on our small and medium industries (SMEs), who may be more exposed in this new environment,' he told reporters at the GBS By The Sea launching ceremony in Bayan Lepas here, today. Chow said that the current exemptions remained in place for now, but expects the situation to become clearer by the end of the year. He highlighted that Penang accounted for about 55 per cent of Malaysia's electrical and electronics (E&E) exports, highlighting the state's vital contribution to the national economy and reinforcing the urgency for strategic trade negotiations. It was reported earlier that the US would impose a reduced 19 per cent tariff on Malaysian imports, effective Aug 1, 2025. On July 7, Washington announced a 25 per cent tariff on all Malaysian products entering the US, in addition to existing sectoral tariffs, effective Aug 1 this year. This figure was one percentage point higher than the tariff rate announced in April. Meanwhile, on the Penang-Perak water project, Chow said negotiations with the Perak state authority would commence soon. 'We are working pretty well. Negotiations with Perak will begin very soon, followed by the implementation of the project. The target is by 2030 to 2031,' he said. Chow added that the additional water supply would be crucial for supporting the Penang Development Corporation (PDC)'s efforts to open new areas for industrial development. The chief minister also highlighted that Penang remained on a strong growth trajectory, driven by positive investment sentiment, including both new investments and expansions. 'We are currently focused on expanding our industrial parks. Recently, I announced that we have sufficient industrial land for the next five years. 'But sometimes, we may speak too soon. When one or two large investors come in with big land requirements, we have to work even harder to ensure the land is ready,' he said. - Bernama

No compromise on halal standards for US imports
Halal products imported from the United States must still comply with the standards set by the Islamic Development Department (Jakim), said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz. 'What we have agreed with the US is to facilitate the process of importing halal products into Malaysia, but not to compromise on the halal standards,' he told a press conference today, following the US announcement of a tariff reduction on Malaysian exports to 19 percent from 25 percent previously.

The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said that this was the concession requested by the United States during protracted tariff negotiations which began in April and concluded yesterday. 'The US list involves 11,260 tariff lines. Of this, a total of 6,911 products are mainly industrial manufacturing products, which made up a large portion of the list. 'Another 191 products fall under the agricultural tariff line. 'This means that about 61% of imported products under the list will have zero tariff,' he told a press conference. He added that about 39% of the US products under the list saw their tariffs reduced. 'This means we had made a comprehensive offer that covers 98.4% of all tariff lines to eliminate or reduce tariffs,' he added. 'The reduction of tariff is a win-win outcome for both Malaysia and the United States, demonstrating a strong and constructive bilateral Malaysia-US relationship, built over the last 68 years,' Tengku Zafrul said. The United States had initially requested zero or reduced tariffs on a total of 11,444 US products during negotiations. He noted that 6,567 US products were already on the zero tariff list which was agreed on during previous negotiations. Among the US agriculture products that will have zero tariffs, he said, include dairy, poultry, fruits and sanitary products. He added that the 19% tariffs imposed on Malaysian exports to the United States will also be enforced on Aug 8. On Malaysian semiconductors and pharmaceutical exports to the United States, Tengku Zafrul said that they are exempted from the 19% tariffs imposed by the United States. 'At the moment, semiconductors and pharmaceutical products from Malaysia which are exported to the United States are exempted from tariffs. 'However, this is subject to Section 323 of the US Trade Expansion Act. 'The US Department of Trade and Commerce will still have to decide if this is fair,' he said, adding that the final decision will be known by the end of the year. Tengku Zafrul said that the conclusion of the US tariff negotiations will help provide some certainty to exporters and industries in Malaysia. He said that he will be issuing a joint statement with US Trade Representative ambassador Jamieson Greer on the tariffs soon.
