Japanese government bonds fall as 30-year auction tests demand
Prices of the benchmark JGB declined, sending its yield up 2 basis points (bps) to 1.445%.
The 20-year yield rose 2 bps to 2.345%.
The 30-year JGB gained 1.5 bps to 2.9%. Yields move inversely to bond prices.
The market for JGBs, particularly long-dated bonds, has faced challenges of late amid the Bank of Japan's (BOJ) tapering of bond purchases, softer demand from life insurers and concerns over the nation's fiscal health.
A 20-year JGB auction in May saw the weakest demand since 1987 and the subsequent sales of 30- and 40-year securities saw subdued uptake in the market.
Yields on the super-long debt surged to record levels, prompting the government to curtail the issuance of the securities. The Ministry of Finance sold about 700 billion yen ($4.9 billion) of 30-year JGBs on Thursday, down from about 800 billion yen at the previous auction.
The auction's bid-to-cover ratio, a measure of demand, was 3.58 versus 2.92 in June.
The tail, another measure of demand, was 0.31 yen versus 0.49 yen previously.
Benchmark JGB futures held declines after the sale.

Japan to export used destroyers to Philippines to deter China, Yomiuri reports
TOKYO: Japan will export used navy destroyers to the Philippines to strengthen its deterrence against China's maritime expansion, the Yomiuri newspaper reported on Sunday, as the two U.S. allies increase cooperation to counter Beijing. The export plan involves six Abukuma-class destroyer escorts in service by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force for more than three decades, the Japanese daily said, citing multiple unnamed government sources. Defence ministers Gen Nakatani and Gilberto Teodoro agreed to the destroyer export when they met in Singapore last month, the Yomiuri said, adding the Philippine military is set to inspect the destroyers this summer as part of the final preparations. A Japanese defence ministry spokesperson declined to comment on the report. A Philippine military spokesperson and China's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. Tokyo and Manila say they face challenges from Beijing's increasingly assertive moves in waters including the South China Sea for the Philippines and the East China Sea for Japan. Bilateral military cooperation has included joint exercises, a Japanese radar aid package and a high-level strategic dialogue. Last year they signed a reciprocal access agreement, the first such for Japan in Asia, allowing deployment of forces on each other's soil. To clear military equipment export restrictions for the destroyers under Japan's pacifist mandates, Tokyo will treat the installation of equipment and communication systems requested by Manila as a joint development project, the Yomiuri said. China, Philippines clash in South China Sea despite efforts to rebuild trust The Abukuma-class destroyer escort, a relatively small type of destroyer with a 2,000-ton standard displacement, is operated by a crew of about 120 and is armed with anti-submarine and anti-ship missiles, torpedo tubes and guns, according to a Japanese navy website. The Philippine Navy does not have destroyers, only frigates and corvettes, which are typically smaller and lighter-armed vessels.

Federal govt employees: MoF notifies 10pc ad hoc relief, 30pc DRA
ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Finance on Friday notified grant of ad hoc relief of 10 percent and 30 percent grant of Disparity Reduction Allowance-2025 to the employees of the federal government. The ministry issued an office memorandum which stated that the President has been pleased to sanction with effect from 01.07.2025 and till further orders, an Ad hoc Relief Allowance-2025 @ 10 per cent of running basic pay to Armed Forces Personnel, Civil Armed Forces and to all the Civil Employees of Federal Government as well as the civilians paid from Defence Estimates and contract employees employed against civil posts in basic pay scales on standard terms and conditions of contract appointment. The amount of Ad-hoc Relief Allowance-2025: i. will be subject to Income Tax; ii. Will be admissible during leave and entire period of LPR except during extra ordinary leave; iii. Will not be treated as part of emoluments for the purpose of calculation of pension/gratuity and recovery of house rent; iv. Will not be admissible to the employees during the tenure of their posting/deputation abroad; and v. Will be admissible to the employees on their repatriation from posting/deputation abroad at the rate and amount which would have been admissible to them had they not been posted abroad. Employees demand reasonable salary increase The term 'basic pay' for the purpose of Ad-hoc Relief Allowance-2025 will also include the amount of the personal pay granted on account of annual increment (s) beyond the maximum of the existing pay scales. The above Ad-hoc Relief Allowance-2025 shall be accommodated from within the budgetary allocation for the year 2025-26 by the respective ministries/divisions/departments and no supplementary grants shall be allowed on this account. Another office memorandum issued by the Finance Ministry stated that the President has been pleased to sanction with effect from 01 .07.2025 grant of Disparity Reduction Allowance (DRA) @ 30 per cent of basic pay as on 30.6.2022 to the officers/officials in BPS-1 to 22 who are already drawing DRA on the same terms and conditions provided under Finance Division's No. 14(1)R-312021-69, dated 23.02.2022and OM No FNo 14(1)R3l2o21dated 19th July 2022.
