Connecticut law that allows towing companies to sell seized cars after just 15 days is predatory, critics say

Waterbury, Connecticut — There is a controversial law in Connecticut that allows tow truck companies to sell the cars they tow after just 15 days. Critics of the law call it predatory and say private tow truck operators are targeting working class neighborhoods. Paul Boudreau and Greta Blau of Waterbury, Connecticut, had their car towed in 2021. "They said it was because the registration was expired," Boudreau said. "DMV had just reopened at that point, there was about a six- to 10-week wait to register a car even." A few weeks later they found out their car was going to be sold. "And I lost the car," Boudreau said. "…And that's perfectly legal in Connecticut. People can't come up with $300 to $600 to $800 in an evening." The couple told CBS News their apartment complex was targeted for years. "They took 1,000 cars in two years," Blau said of her complex. The problem got so bad, Boudreau and Blau helped set up a neighborhood watch, keeping an eye out for one specific company. "The guy who tows the cars, the name of the company, is LLC," Blau said. "He targets places like these complexes where working class people live, where poor people live." Their property manager eventually barred MyHoopty from coming to their apartment complex, but CBS News discovered the company was still targeting other complexes in the area by staking out another complex overnight. At about 5:30 a.m. local time, the CBS News crew saw the glowing lights of a MyHoopty tow truck and watched as it stopped at a CBS News producer's car, fully intent on towing it away. The crew moved the car before that could happen. "Rules are set to ensure that most residents that have a right to park there, can park as close to their property as possible," Michael Festa, owner of MyHoopty, told CBS News. When asked whether he believes what his company is doing is right, Festa responded, "I think it's right and just to enforce the rules of the (apartment) complex."

Jimmie Johnson to Live Out Childhood Dream, Pilot His Favorite Boat, Muncey's Blue Blaster

Jimmie Johnson induction into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (MSHFA) in 2024 was part of a domino effect that would fulfilled a childhood fantasy of the seven-time NASCAR Cup Champion and also answered a 40-year mystery for those associated with Bill Muncey and the Atlas Van Lines Blue Blaster. Legacy Motor Club, the NASCAR Cup team in which Johnson recently became the majority owner of, announced that on August 1st, Johnson will pilot Muncey's famed Blue Blaster Unlimited Hydroplane racer at the Seafair Weekend Festival in Seattle, Washington. This will be the fastest that the NASCAR and IndyCar alum will take to the waters as Hydroplanes are capable of speeds north of 200 MPH. Johnson's love of powerboat racing started at an early age, when his dad, Gary, would take him to local races in California. More than four decades ago, Johnson was taken to the boat races in San Diego's Mission Bay by his father. They stood on the beach as a four-year-old Jimmie watched one of his racing idols break down and saw his boat drift into the shallow water near where they were watching. Fans walked through the low water out to the boat to get a closer look, and with a nod of permission from Muncey, the elder Johnson placed his son on the boat for him to experience the moment. Two future Motorsports Hall of Famers (MSHFA) unknowingly stared in a photo together with Johnson sitting in a bright yellow bucket hat at the back of the boat as Muncey posed at the front of the boat. Muncey would die in a 'blow-over' accident aboard the Blue Blaster two years later in 1981 while leading a race in Acapulco Mexico. As a two-time national champion and three-time Gold Cup winner, Muncey was inducted into the MSHFA post-humously eight years later. After his death, Muncey's wife Fran would continue to run the team with Chip Haunger as the new racer, she was inducted into MSHFA just three years before Johnson in 2021 making Fran and Bill the first spousal duo to enter the hall of fame seperatedly. Muncey's Unlimited would be restored superficially and brought to the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum in Washington DC. Years later, when it was moved out of rotation at the Smithsonian it made it's way to Washington State, finding a resting spot at the Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum outside of Seattle. Here, it would be given a second life as the museum director, David Williams and a crew of volunteers restarted it to be fit to run. A crew member for Johnson was the one to first to make the connection, letting members associated with the restoration of the Blue Blaster know that Johnson was a long time fan. This led Williams, Haunger, and Fran to get in contact with Johnson. In one of their early conversations the discovery was made that there was photographic evidence of a four-year-old Johnson on the back of Muncey's boat. Soon the plan would be hatched to get the NASCAR driver behind the steering wheel of his childhood dream. The MSHFA along with Bring A Trailer hosted a fundraiser auction for one lucky fan and guest to win a two-day VIP experience at the 2025 Seafair Weekend Festival with the chance to meet Jimmie Johnson before he takes the Blue Blaster out on the water. The winning bid was $10,250. Here's Why Aehr Test Systems Surged in June (Hint: It's AI related)

Aehr Test Systems is not a one-trick pony, and the company is impressively diversifying its revenue streams. The market is speculating that its new customers could prove lucrative and lasting. 10 stocks we like better than Aehr Test Systems › Aehr Test Systems (NASDAQ: AEHR) stock rose by 35.5% in June, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence. The move comes as positive developments in the end markets that Aehr is targeting helped support the idea that the company can diversify its revenue streams and improve its growth in the process. The company is best known for its test and burn-in equipment for the silicon carbide (SiC) wafer-level burn-in (WLBI) market. As management notes, this end market contributed 90% of Aehr's revenue in 2024. Unfortunately, at least from a near-term perspective, the key driver for Aehr's SiC WLBI solutions is the electric vehicle (EV) market and its associated charging infrastructure. Aehr's key customers in this market, which include ON Semiconductor, have come under pressure due to the ongoing relatively high interest rate negatively impacting EV sales. For reference, and by way of example, Wall Street analysts expect ON Semiconductor's sales to decline by 16.5% in 2025. Consequently, Aehr needs to develop other markets to help offset weakness in its core SiC WLBI market. And the good news is it's not only doing that, but those markets are also in growth mode. The progress was noted in the third-quarter earnings presentation in April with CEO Gayn Erickson outlining that SiC WLBI revenue is now tracking to "less than 40%, with artificial intelligence (AI) processors burn-in representing over 35% of our business in just the first year." Furthermore, in the third quarter, Aehr had four customers accounting for 10% of its revenue, with three of them coming from new markets for Aehr: WLBI for AI processors Packaged part burn-in (PPBI) "for qualification and ongoing process monitoring of AI processors" "WLBI of gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductors" Fast forward to June, and the positive momentum in AI and GaN WLBI spending has continued with Nvidia's well-received earnings report coming at the end of May. Moreover, Nvidia is working on developing a data center architecture for the next generation of data centers, starting in 2027, and has named GaN semiconductor company Navitas Semiconductor as a partner. As such, the market is speculating that Navitas could be a potential customer of Aehr Test Systems. The growth of alternative revenue streams is a significant plus for Aehr's investment case, and demand for SiC WLBI is likely to improve over time as EV investment is expected to increase. All told, the company's revenue and earnings remain highly cyclical, but its new end markets are helping to reduce its heavy reliance on EV spending, which has benefited the stock in June.
