Veteran dental materials supplier SDI (ASX:SDI) has flagged soft numbers for the 2024-25 year, mainly because the world is phasing out amalgam filling material that contains mercury.
With pre-reporting results due out on August 28, SDI said revenue for the year to June would come in at $111 million, 0.2% lower than the previous year.
Net profit will be $10-10.4 million, compared with $10.4 million previously.
SDI cites a 20.45% decline in amalgam sales, most pronounced in North America and Europe.
Amalgams account for 13% of SDI's sales, compared with 16% last year and 23% five years ago.
In absolute terms, however, SDI's amalgam sales have been steady at $18 million – a trend not lost on anti-mercury proponents.
Overall SDI's European and Brazilian sales grew 7.2% and 9.9% respectively in local currency terms, offset by overall weakness in the Middle East and Asia.
While an ugly grey, amalgam fillings remain popular because of their strength.
But given they contain 50% mercury, their use is either being restricted or banned.
The European Union is phasing out the use of the material by 2030, while Sweden and Norway have banned it.
Elsewhere, Moldova, Mongolia, some Persian Gulf states, and the Philippines have also outlawed the grey gob filler.
A global treaty, the Minamata Convention on Mercury aims to phase out dental amalgam but doesn't impose a complete ban.
A signatory to this accord, Australia has restricted the use of bulk mercury in dental practices.
Today's SDI release makes no mention of Stela, its replacement product that is pearly white and with the strength of an amalgam filling.
Quiet export achiever
For more than 50 years, SDI developed and exported dental supplies from its base in eastern Melbourne.
Now the company's chair, Jeffery James Cheetham founded the company, then known as Southern Dental Industries in 1972.
SDI listed on the ASX in 1985 and is now run by Cheetham's daughter Samantha.
And speaking of medtech exporters, Adelaide based optical device stalwart Nova Eye Medical (ASX:EYE) has reported June half sales (excluding China) of US$9.57 million, thus snugly meeting guidance of US$9-10 million.
Nova's full year revenue was US$18.4 million, up 21% with the US accounting for US$14.2 million (up 25%).
Nova shares gained an eye-catching 12%.
Botanix US update hits a sweaty note
Addressing a webcast of more than 600 investors, Botanix Pharmaceuticals (ASX:BOT) announced it had chalked up $25 million of gross US Sofdra sales since launching the drug in January.
Despite this impressive take-up, punters wiped more than 40% – or $240 million – from the company's market cap.
The reason appears to be a higher-than-expected gap between those gross sales and the amount the company pockets.
Sofdra treats primary axillary hyperhidrosis (PAH): excessive underarm sweating beyond what's required to regulate body temperature.
The company reports that dermatologists wrote 16,000 prescriptions for 6700 patients, with refill rates of 3.4 per year.
This compares with the sector average of two refills per year.
'We are in line with some of the best derm launches out there,' Botanix executive director Howie McKibbon said.
A tube of Sofdra – enough for a month's supply – costs US$300 to US$400.
Patients enrolled on the company's auto-refill program had a 95% adherence rate, "a measure of how consistently patients obtain refills for their prescribed medications.'
Otherwise, 79% of patients adhered to the treatment.
As of June, Sofdra's prescriber base stood at 2300 docs.
Now to profitability
In June the company's gross yield to to net revenue stood at 23%, up from 13% in January. This reflects the amount pocketed by intermediaries by way of discounts, rebates and such.
While Botanix's take seems low, management says its share of the pie is industry leading.
The company targets a 30-40% range, compared to generic skin offerings that might only attract a 10-15% margin.
Management also said the proportion of reimbursed scripts has also grown to 39% of the total, compared with 26% at the start of January.
Meanwhile, Botanix is expanding its US reach from an initial reach of 27 to 33, with plan underway to increase the number to 50.
The company also reassured investors that it was not planning a capital raising and that Trump's tariffs likely would be immaterial.
Botanix currently is holding an event series called 'Summer of Sweat'.
This sounds like a Woodstock style festival but it's a forum for Botanix execs to meet with healthcare providers across 14 US cities.
Woodstock went ahead despite torrential rain and we're sure management will rock on despite the setback.
Cochlear hears good news from the FDA
In a disclosure Hemingway-esque in its brevity, Cochlear (ASX:COH) today said the FDA has approved its next-generation Nucleus Nexa implants – 'the world's first and only smart cochlear implant system' – as well as its Nucleus Kanso and Kanso 3 Nexa sound processors.
Cochlear hopes the refreshed products will staunch recent weakness in its developed country sales.
The company launched the 'Nucleus Nexa System' – the implant/processor comb -in Europe and the Asia Pacific last month.
It plans to launch the products in the US in the current quarter.
Syntara's new name will grow on us
Most investigative drug names are odd for a reason, because they need to be unique and avoid bold therapeutic claims.
Come to think of it, they can't mean much at all – as Syntara's (ASX:SNT) new drug name would attest.
The World Health Organisation has ascribed an International Non-Proprietary Name (INN) to Syntara's myelofibrosis drug candidate, SNT-5505.
Commonly known as a generic name, an INN is a globally recognised, unique name for a pharmaceutical substance or active ingredient.
The new moniker for SNT-5505? Amsulostat.
Syntara CEO Gary Phillips says the name reflects the drug's 'unique mechanism of action and clinical promise'.
We're sure it will grow on everyone over time – and we've heard worse.

The United States has hailed Australia's decision to drop a partial ban on beef imports as a "major trade breakthrough" for Donald Trump and his administration, as the federal government faces questions over whether the move was made to appease the president. The Opposition has also raised biosecurity concerns over Thursday's announcement, with the federal government insisting the decision followed a decade-long science-based review. Many Australian cattle producers will have been left blindsided by the decision, an industry group says, but the level of American product arriving in Australia is expected to be very low. "American farmers and ranchers produce the safest, healthiest beef in the world. It's absurd that non-scientific trade barriers prevented our beef from being sold to consumers in Australia for the last 20 years," US agriculture secretary Brooke Rollins said in a statement. "Gone are the days of putting American farmers on the sidelines. This is yet another example of the kind of market access the president negotiates to bring America into a new golden age of prosperity, with American agriculture leading the way." Source: AAP / Mick Tsikas The US has been able to send beef to Australia since 2019, but any beef raised in Canada or Mexico before being slaughtered and processed in the US was previously barred due to biosecurity concerns. One concern was that Mexico's livestock tracking system could inadvertently lead producers to import beef from parts of the continent where there were disease outbreaks. But the latest announcement will lift the ban on beef sourced from Canada or Mexico after the US introduced more robust movement controls in late 2024 and early 2025, allowing for improved identification and tracing throughout the supply chain. 'Nothing suspicious' about beef ban lift "It looks as though it's (biosecurity) been traded away to appease Donald Trump," Littleproud told ABC's Radio National on Thursday. "If we want to export our beef overseas, then we have to accept that other countries will want to import their beef into Australia," he told Sky News. The Opposition has also raised biosecurity concerns, with frontbencher James Paterson calling on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to "stand up ... and explain" to Australia's beef farmers that the government hasn't "watered down" biosecurity. "The prime minister himself has said [in April] that we couldn't relax the restrictions on the importation of US beef because of serious biosecurity concerns," Paterson said. "So if the government has found some way of dealing with that issue, protecting our domestic agricultural industry from the introduction of foreign diseases and pests, then they should say so." Evans said the industry had "put faith" in the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry's expertise, with the deal largely favouring Australian exporters. "They've made this assessment themselves. They've said: 'look, we've looked at this. We've looked at the best science. This is a decision we feel comfortable with'," he said. Some have raised worries US beef could impact Australia's domestic market, but industry representatives remain relatively unperturbed. "It's a bit like selling ice to Eskimos," Australian Meat Industry Council CEO Tim Ryan told the ABC. Evans said the domestic beef industry is self-sufficient and any imports of US beef are "unlikely to have any effect on the market here". The US beef industry can't supply domestic demand, he said. Health Check: Records tumble as biotech's star quarterly reporters pick up the pace
• Several emerging life science plays are taking revenue to new heights – and some have even turned profitable • Little Green Pharma seeks to avoid a second pay 'strike' • Althea founder exits the building It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that biotechs with little or no revenue and cascading cash outflows will leave their quarterly disclosures to the last possible moment. Given dozens of other companies holding off until around July 31 – the deadline for lodging June quarterlies – this crowds out the bad news. The corollary is that those with pleasant surprises prefer to break with the hoi polio and go early. True to trend, today's reporters have broken more sales records than our Glasgow-bound Gout Gout. In fact, the last time your columnist heard so much about records was in a Brashs store in the 1980s … which dates him somewhat. The company (and patient) are doing well The provider of software to make hospitals run more smoothly, Alcidion (ASX:ALC) reports record quarterly cash flow of $7.4 million for the quarter. This takes the year's surplus to $5.8 million (also an all-time high). Full-year receipts came in at $50.9 million, 16% higher. Alcidion provides software to hospitals – such as patient workflow tools – to enable them to run more smoothly and prevent surgeons from amputating the wrong leg. The company has a meaningful local and UK presence across 400 hospitals and 87 healthcare organisations. Management reports new June quarter sales of $6.7 million, 73% of which are recurring. The company also affirms underlying earnings of $4.5 million for the 2024-25 year, upped from $3 million in June. This should be confirmed at August's full year results prezzo. Hear! Hear! A record year for Audeara The maker of hearing augmentation devices, Audeara (ASX:AUA) reports June quarter revenue of $722,000, which takes full-year turnover to a record $3.78 million (up 22%). Audeara own-branded headphones are sold via hearing clinics. But the company has skewed its business to its AUA Technology arm, which has an 'Intel inside' model of providing the technology to big-ticket international customers. These include the 400-year-old US instrument maker, Avedis Zildjian. Audeara founder and CEO Dr James Fielding dubs the quarter as a 'period of consolidation'. He says the company 'executed on several strategic initiatives to ensure it capitalises on the growth established through the AUA Technology division over the previous 12 months". Audeara also had $757,000 of cash outflows for the quarter, reducing June-end cash to $1.42 million. But Fielding says the company should see a 'material uplift' in current quarter revenues, owing to a chunky Avedis Zildjian re-order. Bioxyne eyes European growth A supplier of cannabis and psychedelic meds, Bioxyne (ASX:BXN) more than doubled full-year revenue to $9.55 million, with full-year revenue up 215% to $29.3 million. Did we mention that was a record? The company also managed positive cash flow of $1.5 million for the June stanza. This takes the full-year cash flow to $6.2 million, compared to a $3.6 million deficit in 2023-24. Management attributes the surge to the Australian operating of its subsidiary Breathe Life Sciences. But Bioxyne's greater growth prospects lie with the UK and European markets, notably Germany where it has inked two key manufacturing and supply agreements. Little Green faces big pay votes Still on pot stocks, Little Green Pharma (ASX:LGP) again faces the music on two remuneration-related motions at its August 21 AGM. As a March balance date entity, Little Green beats the usual AGM rush. Last year, 83% of voting shares were cast against Little Green's 'rem' report, well beyond the 25% 'no' vote threshold. If investors again knock back the proposal, they'll vote on a motion to spill the board (this one requires a minimum 50% 'yes' vote). The board has also reprised last year's proposal to accelerate the vesting of management and executive share incentives, in the event of the "person ceasing to hold such office." Investors overwhelmingly opposed this one last time as well. Thorney Investments is Little Green's biggest shareholder on 19.7%. Gina Rinehart's Hancock Prospecting supported a 2021 capital raising and emerged with 10%. But it's not clear how much she holds now. Althea founder bows out We're not obsessed with cannabis – that's a promise – but it behooves us to report that Althea Group (ASX:AGH) founder and CEO Josh Fegan has left the company, with 'immediate effect'. Fegan created Althea in 2016 and the company listed in September 2018. Fegan had been at the helm all that time. As we reported on Wednesday, Althea has given up on the over-competed local medicinal pot sector. The company now is focusing on the North American recreational market via its subsidiary Peak Processing. Specifically, Peak is getting into THC-laced beverages as an alternative to alcoholic ones. Althea share tumbled 10% on the surprise tidings. On Bell Potter's gut feel, Microba's worth much more Bell Potter reckons there's 60% share price upside in Microba Life Sciences (ASX:MAP), which provides microbiome testing. Microba on Wednesday reported a 13% June quarter revenue decline, to $4.2 million. But stripping out the divestment of a legacy research business, revenue grew 4% year-on-year. Microba has two core products: Metaxplore and Metapanel. Metapanel is the 'first line' test to determine whether a doc can treat a pathogen simply with antibiotics. Metaxplore probes anything else that could be wrong with the patient's microbiome. The company has free cash flow burn of $6.3 million for the quarter and $15.3 million for the year. But this rate has been 'relatively steady' over the last two years. Following a $14.5m capital raising – backed by biggest shareholder Sonic Healthcare – Microba has $20.2 million of cash with no debt. "Most legacy sales have now unwound, so we anticipate more meaningful consolidated topline growth for the group in 2025-26," Bell Potter says. The forecasts an adjusted net loss of $14.6 million for 2024-25 and a simialar deficit this year. The company expects to break even in 2027-28. Bell Potter values stock at 16 cents, tempered from its previous 26 cent guesstimate.

Australia lifts biosecurity restrictions on US beef
Australia has lifted biosecurity restrictions on beef imports from the United States, one of the key grievances that led the Trump administration to impose tariffs on Australia. ABC NewsRadio's Sarah Morice spoke to John McKillop, the Chair of the Red Meat Advisory Council, about what the changes will mean for Australia's beef exports.
