Fritz won a dramatic fourth set tie-break to level the match at two sets apiece.
He and his opponent were then approached by a tournament referee shortly after 10.15 pm local time.
And a decision was made to stop the match despite there being more than 40 minutes of time available.
It was deemed that the match might not finish before the curfew.
And stopping before the fifth set began rather than potentially interrupting it at 11 pm was the preferred option.
Fritz showed his unhappiness on court having just fought back from two sets down to wrestle momentum.
The US star will have to return to No. 1 Court Tuesday to play to a finish.
ESPN's coverage from The All England Club began at 6 am ET on Tuesday.

"You can play until 11 pm here with the curfew.
"Terrible decision," the former world No. 11 said.
"To go out and say 'we might not finish the fifth set'.
"You can't make the decision based on a hypothetical
"One of them could have won the fifth set 6-2 in 30 minutes."

The US star was two sets down in a game that was moved onto No. 1 Court.
Officials took a decision to start the game under the roof at shortly after 7 pm local time.
The move was made to avoid a delay in closing the roof if the game went beyond 9 pm and daylight faded.
Play can continue on Centre Court and No. 1 Court until an 11 pm curfew.
Fritz and Mpetshi Perricard follow No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner onto court on Tuesday to complete their game.

Alexander-Arnold grabs the assist as Real Madrid edge Juventus to reach last 8

GONZALO GARCIA'S 54th-minute header was enough to give Real Madrid a 1-0 win over Juventus at Hard Rock Stadium on Tuesday and book their place in the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup. The Spanish giants will face the winner of Tuesday's other game between Borussia Dortmund and Mexico's Monterrey in the last eight. It was an impressive display from Xabi Alonso's Madrid side, and adding to a positive day, Kylian Mbappe made his return from illness, coming on as a 68th-minute substitute for his first appearance of the tournament. The first half was a finely balanced contest with Igor Tudor's Juventus starting brightly before Real ended it on top. There was an early chance for Juve's Randal Kolo Muani after clever work from Kenan Yildiz to put him through on goal, but the French forward opted for an attempted chip of Thibaut Courtois, and his shot floated over the bar. Advertisement The impressive Yildiz then burst through the middle and unleashed a fierce effort which deflected off Aurelien Tchouameni and flew wide. The Turin team, beaten 5-2 by Manchester City in their final group game, were moving the ball around with confidence, but Real grew into the contest, and they went close when Jude Bellingham forced a save out of Michele Di Gregorio from close range. Federico Valverde then tested the Juve goalkeeper from long range, and Trent Alexander-Arnold whipped a low ball across the face of the goal as Madrid finished the half strongly. The interval did nothing to alter the momentum of the game with Real creating several chances — Bellingham laid off to Valverde, whose sweetly-struck shot was just wide and then Bellingham himself brought another good save out of Di Gregorio with a shot from the edge of the box. Dean Huijsen's rocketing drive was parried out by the busy goalkeeper as Real laid siege to the Juventus goal, and it was no surprise when the breakthrough finally arrived. Alexander-Arnold floated in a cross from the right, which Gonzalo met with a perfectly-timed header for his third goal in four games in the tournament. Juve responded with Portuguese winger Francisco Conceicao bringing Courtois into action from a low shot, the Belgian shot-stopper did well to get down to. But Real wanted to finish the contest off, and Valverde tested Di Gregorio's reactions with an overhead kick before Alonso decided to introduce Mbappe to the delight of the 62,149 crowd. Juve's belief remained, however, and Nicolas Gonzalez flashed a 25-yard drive just wide. At the other end, Real's Turkish midfielder Arda Guler saw his crisp shot kept out by the feet of Di Gregorio, but the one goal was enough. – © AFP 2025

Dan Evans ready for a crack at Novak Djokovic in Wimbledon second round

Dan Evans believes he has earned one more shot at claiming a statement Wimbledon win after securing a second-round showdown with Novak Djokovic. Evans won the battle of Britain against fellow wild card Jay Clarke 6-1 7-5 6-2 to claim his first victory in SW19 since 2021. His reward is a second career meeting with 24-time grand slam champion Djokovic – four years after he won their first in Monte Carlo. 'I think when they do the stats, it has to be over three matches to have a 100 per cent record, so we'll say I have a decent record,' smiled Evans. It was the 35-year-old's first Wimbledon win in four years (John Walton/PA) 'But five sets are a lot different to three sets, albeit it was a big tournament.' Now 35, Evans says he is too long in the tooth to be overawed by another of the oldest swingers in town, 38-year-old Djokovic. 'I mean, there is no better place to do it than here,' he added. 'I've said all along, I would love one more. 'I had some fourth rounds, but my goal was to make the quarters of a grand slam. You don't always reach your goals, but I still believe I have a shot. 'This is his best surface, I imagine. It's going to be a tough match. But when I play the top guys, I don't change much about myself. It's not about them, it's about me. We're both competing for the same goal. Novak Djokovic awaits in the second round (Jordan Pettitt/PA) 'I've got a lot of respect for Novak. He's a great champion. He's done wonders for the game. He's done pretty much everything in the game. 'But it's also my chance to win the match. I have to be competitive, I have to play my game, I have to be myself. I can't go into my shell and have too much respect. 'Of course I'm lucky I've been inside the top 50 for X amount of years before that, and I got the experience to play on the big courts. 'Yeah, I am a wild card, but I don't feel like I'm a wild card playing Novak. I still feel my level's really good.' Evans has endured a tough year on the court having slipped down the rankings to outside the top 150. A calf injury curtailed his season last year and he spoke emotionally earlier in the week about starting to wonder whether the hard work he puts in every day is still worth it. 'Yeah, it's not that easy,' he added. 'The body obviously is getting older, as am I. 'I try the best with the team I have to be able to practice each day. It's not like this is the end product when you come to the tournament. 'You can't miss sessions because you just won't be good enough to win at these tournaments. You have to do the day in, day out stuff. 'Of course it gets harder. Things change a little, as well, in your training. But the last two, three months I've done a good job of it.'
