Lions player ratings: Tadhg Beirne and Tom Curry best of the tourists in Sydney washout
Remarkably resolute in the face of the
Wallabies
utter dominance on the night, he was unyielding in defence, chased everything, won most of his duels and made a try saving tackle.
Rating:
7
14 Tommy Freeman
He will be disappointed to be caught in no man's land for the Dylan Pietsch try, biting in rather than putting his faith in Jamison Gibson-Park to make the tackle. Robust in a couple of carries before going off for a HIA and not returning.
Rating:
5
13 Huw Jones
While he did not get a chance to demonstrate his attacking qualities, he stuck manfully to his task in defence and eventually finished the game on the wing.
Rating:
6
12 Bundee Aki
A couple of good early carries but then was caught standing up for a maul turnover and a couple of knocks-on in contact and a few missed tackles. Outplayed by Len Ikitau.
Rating:
5

11 Blair Kinghorn
Misplaced the pass for the Max Jorgensen try but not helped by his team-mates over-running the offload. Not a night for wingers and his aerial or running ability wasn't brought to bear because of the conditions.
Rating:
5
10 Finn Russell
There was precious little that he could do based on how the match panned out. Australia were utterly dominant up front and in the monsoon conditions there was little the Scot could do to turn the tide.
Rating:
6
9 Jamison Gibson-Park
He worked incredibly hard despite having virtually no platform as his team were second best in so many areas. On a filthy night it was his defensive work that stood out. A superb three-Test package.
Rating:
7

1 Andrew Porter
Penalised for standing up in the first scrum, he was fired up in his carrying and tackling and ended up in a few skirmishes, notably with Will Skelton. Ridiculous penalty given against him in the James Ryan incident, symptomatic of the rank officiating.
Rating:
6
2 Dan Sheehan
Good in general play, the Aussies got after the
Lions'
lineout superbly pinching a handful of throws, penalised for coming in the side of a ruck near the Wallaby line. Escaped punishment when clearing out Tom Lynagh at a ruck which incensed the Aussies.
Rating:
6
3 Tadhg Furlong
His ninth consecutive start in a Test match and it'll be one of unrelenting frustration in the sense that he wasn't rewarded for what appeared to be an edge in the scrum. Worked hard for his team on both sides of the ball.
Rating:
6
4 Maro Itoje (capt)
Beaten to a lineout and conceded a penalty, the Lions captain was playing his way back into the game when he was forced off for a HIA in the first half, which he ultimately failed.
Rating:
6
5 James Ryan
Mistimed a tackle on Will Skelton, caught a knee as he got his head on the wrong side and was knocked out in the process. He had been physically combative to that point, one of the few players to be effective in that respect in the first half.
Rating:
6

6 Tadhg Beirne
Stole a lineout, won a penalty turnover at a ruck before ruckus, worked tirelessly for his team in a losing cause and ended the match as captain. A worthy official player of the series.
Rating:
8
7 Tom Curry
Heroic in defeat, gave everything in body and soul until he could give no more when taken off with an injury, carried with intent and tackled with great ferocity. A brilliant series from an outstanding flanker.
Rating:
8
8 Jack Conan
If there was one area of the team that was more effective in a performance in which the Lions were second best in so many areas it was the individual work-rate of the backrow. Power in contact, carrying and tackling.
Rating:
7
Replacements
The Lions had to go to the bench early, losing two players to failed HIAs and another taken off on a stretcher. Ellis Genge and Jac Morgan won early penalties after their arrivals making the desired impact, with the Welshman also scoring a try but didn't get the same bounce effect as last week.
Rating:
7
Coach
Andy Farrell
will be disappointed with the manner of the defeat more so than simply losing a Test match. Lions were outmuscled. It won't take away from masterminding a series win, which was the ultimate goal.
Rating:
7

Porecki makes surprise call to retire after breaking back into Wallabies
Australia hooker Dave Porecki has retired from professional rugby only weeks after reviving his test career. The New South Wales Waratah battled injuries in recent seasons but made his first Australia appearance under coach Joe Schmidt against Fiji last month after nearly two years out of the Wallabies. After suffering a concussion against Fiji and missing the first British & Irish Lions test in Brisbane, Porecki was recalled for the second clash in Melbourne before being sidelined for the third and final test in Sydney due to a cut heel at training. Capped 21 times for the Wallabies, Porecki said it was the right time to start a new chapter in his life. "Rugby has given me so much to be thankful for and has been such a massive part of my life for so long but it feels like the right time for me to turn the page," he said in a statement on Tuesday. "There's a lot of people who have supported me in my journey, and to them I'll be forever grateful. "I'm especially looking forward to spending more time with my wife Shani and kids Luca, Charlie and Billie. "I look forward to continuing to support the game away from the field in this next stage of my life." Porecki was part of Australia's 2023 World Cup squad and became the 88th Wallabies captain after injury to Will Skelton, leading the side in three of their four pool matches at the tournament. Schmidt praised Porecki as the "the ultimate professional and quiet achiever." "He doesn't say a lot, preferring to get on with the job and to lead by example, and he's done that really well for the time that I've known him," he said.

Everyone saying the same thing about Dan Sheehan's ban
The dust has fully settled on the British & Irish Lions tour of Australia. In what was expected to be an utterly dominant series win from the tourists, the Wallabies more than held their own for the majority of the series and if not for some injuries, they could've caused a huge upset. However after the dramatic Hugo Keenan try to win the second test, it meant the Lions had the series wrapped up before the third an final test in Sydney. Some would be forgiven for giving the inconsequential Aussie win a miss but the game didn't pass without incident. In the downpour in Sydney, play was interrupted because of lightning strikes and a resurgent Wallabies assured that the series didn't end in a sweep as off the back of a powerful forward pack, they beat the Lions 22-12. Dylan Pietsch of the Wallabies celebrates scoring a try. Pic:The game didn't pass without controversy however as Lions hooker and Irish international Dan Sheehan seemingly avoided on-pitch punishment for a dangerous clearout on Wallabies' 10 Tom Lynagh. Lynagh would have to leave the pitch for a Head Injury Assessment which he would fail. He may have avoided punishment from the referee or TMO but Sheehan was cited and has now been given a four-match ban, which can be reduced to three if he chooses to complete a tackle school. Dan Sheehan of British & Irish Lions is tackled by Max Jorgensen. Pic: Steve Christo/Sportsfile Sheehan is set to miss Leinster's pre-season game against Cardiff in September, followed by their trip to South Africa to face the Stormers to open the URC season, then their home season opener against the Sharks. and if he completes the tackle school he should be available for selection in the interpro derby against Munster at Croke Park on October 18. It appears that Leinster's second game of the season against the Bulls in Bloemfontein has been excluded from the ban as Sheehan would've been unlikely to feature in both of Leinster's games on the South Africa tour. However many fans have pointed out that Sheehan would've been highly unlikely to play in any of these games, making the ban redundant. Sheehan along with the rest of the Irish portion of the Lions squad are likely to received some much deserved time off after an extended season. The earliest people should expect any of the Lions to play is that weekend of the Leinster-Munster interpro on October 18 but even then not every player will feature. Dan Sheehan with Harry Wilson of Australia. Pic: INPHO/Dan Sheridan One commenter on X said; 'This is a pretty meaningless ban and makes a mockery of all the effort world rugby has made (rightly/wrongly) over the last few years. Remember that Sam Kane got a straight red card in the World Cup final for something less that what Sheehan did.' Another said; ' Won't miss any 'real' games. Got at least the next 6 weeks off. If the foul is in an international game, ban should be international, not including the domestic league games. And tackle/clear out school is a joke.' Dan Sheehan. Pic: INPHO/Billy Stickland The banning system in rugby doesn't really feel fit for purpose at the moment but it's hard to really find a fair solution. There's too many ways for players to downgrade their punishment and end up not serving an adequate punishment for the foul they commit. If he returns in time Dan Sheehan should be available for selection for the Croke Park clash against Munster and their home match against Zebre before Ireland go to Chicago to play the All Blacks on November 1.

‘Didn't know we'd jumped into a car with a seven-time All-Ireland winner' – Ex-Dublin ace rescues Wexford Fleadh punters
There was somewhat of a similar vibe in Dublin over the weekend as there was in Wexford WEXFORD WAY 'Didn't know we'd jumped into a car with a seven-time All-Ireland winner' – Ex-Dublin ace rescues Wexford Fleadh punters EOGHAN O'GARA was often the super-sub during his playing days with Dublin and emerged as the late hero for two Wexford Fleadh punters. Brandon Cassidy and his pal told of how they had failed in their efforts to snag a taxi to Wexford Town - only for O'Gara to save the day. The lovely gesture was hailed by X users as a "fantastic story". Another Brandon replied: "Fantastic story. Enjoy the fleadh ceoil." While Robbie hailed: "That's what us Dubs are about, especially the southside Dubs, Eoghan is a gent & hasn't he also won a Wexford SF title with Shelmaliers?" Advertisement There were similar scenes of celebration back in the capital too as the Dublin ladies team walloped Meath in the All-Ireland final on Sunday. On Monday the team maintained a long-running tradition by visiting The Boar's Head with the Brendan Martin Cup. Paul Casey and Derek Murray's panel had a busy Bank Holiday Monday as they also brought the trophy to the Crumlin Children's Hospital. Advertisement It was meant to be an even more hectic schedule though, but the windy conditions from Storm Floris saw the official homecoming in Smithfield Square postponed until Tuesday evening. A Dublin City Council statement explained: "Due to Monday's strong winds the homecoming has been moved to the Tuesday rather than the day after the final which would be traditionally done. "Dublin City Council have organised the homecoming for 6pm on Tuesday in Smithfield Square." There will be music and face painting as well as the Brendan Martin Cup present at the event. Casey is delighted to get the chance to present the Cup in front of the Dublin fans. Advertisement When speaking to RTÉ, he outlined: "We're looking forward to getting a great crowd in Smithfield and giving the girls a reception they deserve." He added: "It's great to wake up this morning as All-Ireland champions. "A morning like this is special and tops off a day what was a great day yesterday. It's great, it's a fantastic privilege to come and see the kids in the hospital. "The morning after an All-Ireland is really nice to come here and see the smiles on their faces and all the different county jerseys."
