The protest will be inaugurated by Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden, with committee chairman T N Prathapan presiding. The committee is also demanding the abandonment of plans to bring large corporate ships into the deep-sea sector. Former MLA V Dinakaran will deliver the keynote address. Other speakers include MLA P P Chitharanjan, Jackson Pollayil, Joseph Xavier Kalappurackal and Kerala Fishworkers Aikyavedi Forum president Charles George, among others.
The fishers have been alleging that their fishing nets are getting damaged due to the debris of the shipwreck. They alleged that nets of 10 boats that went fishing from Kochi on Monday were torn, nine parts southwest of the estuary, hitting debris or containers from a ship. "The repair, installation of new nets and a week's work will result in losses worth Rs 10 lakh per boat. Since the sinking of the ship ELSA-3, accidents in the fishing area have been increasing.
Last week, the nets of nine boats were similarly torn west of Thottappally," George said.

EPS To Kick Off 2026 Poll Campaign Today, Hopes To Revive AIADMK's Fortunes

Ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) would launch his statewide campaign this evening from Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district - a traditional AIADMK stronghold in the western region of the state. The campaign is expected to cover all 234 constituencies, with the tagline "Protecting People and Redeeming Tamil Nadu." EPS, who will address a public rally this evening, is expected to highlight what he calls the "failures and unfulfilled promises" of the ruling DMK government. His campaign will also focus on local issues in each constituency, in addition to statewide concerns such as law and order, women's safety, and the growing drug menace. This campaign is widely seen as a make-or-break moment for the AIADMK, which has suffered three successive election defeats since the death of its charismatic leader J Jayalalithaa in 2016. The party's decline began under the dual leadership of EPS and O Panneerselvam (OPS) and has continued even after EPS emerged as the sole leader. After walking out of its alliance with the BJP before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls - where both parties had a bad luck as the DMK-led alliance swept the state - the AIADMK has cautiously revived its ties with the saffron party. However, the alliance appears fragile, with little ground-level synergy and scepticism among cadres. One of the key challenges for EPS is the lack of strong allies, aside from the BJP, which itself holds minimal sway in Tamil Nadu. The entry of actor Vijay's Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has further complicated the political arithmetic. Vijay has categorically ruled out any alliance with the BJP directly or indirectly, keeping the AIADMK at arm's length. Vijay's recent announcement as TVK's Chief Ministerial candidate and his plans to tour the state from September to December, along with a parallel membership drive, signal his intent to become a serious contender. Drawing comparisons with legends like CN Annadurai and MG Ramachandran, Vijay aims to replicate their trajectory from cinema to the Chief Minister's chair. As speculation brews over potential political realignments, a few key questions remain unanswered: Will AIADMK eventually sever ties with BJP to woo Vijay's TVK? Will Vijay consider an alliance as a dominant player, or is he eyeing a solo march to Fort St George? On the other hand, the ruling DMK's alliance remains intact and formidable. Having won three consecutive elections, the party is banking on its welfare programmes such as monthly Rs 1000 assistance for women, free bus rides for women, free breakfast for school children, and youth skill development schemes to retain its base. The DMK has also launched a door-to-door membership campaign aiming to enroll 30 per cent of the state's voters as party members. With elections still nine months away, the political landscape in Tamil Nadu is heating up. What once looked like a bipolar contest is now shaping into a four-cornered battle - between the DMK-led front, AIADMK-BJP alliance, TVK, and Director Seeman's NTK.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta flag off Ayushman Bharat registration vans in New Delhi

New Delhi: Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off Ayushman Bharat registration vans in Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on Sunday. Addressing the event, the BJP chief slammed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for not using Rs 1700 crore under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme for public welfare. He said, "Under PM-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission, we had given Rs 1700 crore to Delhi between 2021 to February 2025, but not one penny was spent, and now the responsibility of the expenditure of this fund for the public welfare has fallen on the shoulders of (Delhi CM) Rekha ji." Continuing his attack against AAP, he added, "We were ready to quench Delhi's thirst with water, but you kept the vessel upside down, so what could be done? On February 20, you turned up the vessel, so you got Ayushman Bharat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was ready to provide Rs 5 lakh for the poor's healthcare since September 2, 2017. Their pride came in between. They did injustice to the poor." Lauding Ayushman Arogya Mandir , Nadda targeted Aam Aadmi Mohalla Clinic and called AAP shortsighted. "A wise man is farsighted and thinks of Ayushman Arogya Mandir, and shortsighted ones bring Mohalla Clinics. From the time a mother conceives a child to the time the child turns two, Ayushman Arogya Mandir takes care of all the vaccinations. India is playing a lead role in reproductive and child health care," JP Nadda said. Last month, on June 17, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Ministers Parvesh Verma and Manjinder Singh Sirsa inaugurated Ayushman Arogya Mandirs in the national capital. After the inauguration, Manjinder Singh Sirsa informed that 33 Ayushman Aarogya Mandirs were inaugurated with excellent infrastructure and facilities. "A total of 33 Arogya Mandirs have been inaugurated today, and they have excellent infrastructure", Manjinder Singh Sirsa said. Meanwhile on May 18, in a major boost to healthcare under the Pradhan Mantri Vay Vandana Yojana , Delhi Minister Ashish Sood distributed Ayushman Bharat cards to senior citizens aged 70 and above in Janakpuri, West Delhi.
