2.57 crore women in Udupi, 9.54 crore in DK availed of Shakti scheme
He was speaking at the celebration of road transport corporations of the State crossing the 500-crore mark in terms of the number of women passengers who have benefited from the scheme, with the government reimbursing more than ₹12,000 crore to the four RTCs of the State.
Speaking after inaugurating the celebrations at the Udupi Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus terminal, Deputy Commissioner T.K. Swaroopa said the Shakti scheme has boosted women empowerment initiatives of the government. The free travel facility for women, girl students and sexual minorities has enhanced the confidence of the beneficiaries, too, she said. It has helped women to undertake self-employment, get an education and undertake other routine work.
Former Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake said the scheme has empowered women, most of whom were confined within the four walls of their houses, to experience the world around them and grow. Government schemes of Shakti, Gruha Lakshmi, Anna Bhaga, Gruha Juyothi and Yuvanidhi have provided economic independence to women, he said.
On the occasion, the dignitaries offered puja to a KSRTC bus and distributed flowers and sweets to the public.
9.54 crore travellers
A similar celebration was organised at the KSRTC Bejai terminal here, led by Ivan D'Souza, MLC. He said the Shakti scheme has improved the economic condition of many families in the State, and women could also travel to places of their choice without any hindrance. It has also helped girl students from economically weaker sections to pursue education, he said.
KSRTC Senior Divisional Controller of Mangaluru, Rajesh Shetty, said as many as 9.54 women travelled by availing of the benefits of the Shakti scheme in Dakshina Kannada district with an estimated cost of ₹322 crore to the government.

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Bengaluru Central Division, has announced a new weekend temple tour package — 'Bengaluru–Shivagange–Siddaganga Matha–Devarayanadurga–Goravanahalli–Vidhurashwatha–Ghati Subramanya,' starting Saturday, July 26. The one-day pilgrimage circuit, covering 277 km, will be operated on Saturdays and Sundays, using KSRTC's Ashwamedha Classic buses. The tour includes visits to prominent temples such as the Sri Gangadhareshwara and Honnamma Devi temples at Shivagange, Sri Siddaganga Matha, Bhoga Narasimha temple at Devarayanadurga, Sri Mahalakshmi temple at Goravanahalli, Ashwatha Narayanaswamy temple at Vidhurashwatha, and ends at the famous Ghati Subramanya temple. Karkidaka Vavu: TDB completes arrangements for Bali tharpanam
Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) has made elaborate arrangements in its temples to facilitate smooth 'bali tharpanam' for devotees during Karkidaka Vavu day. Addressing media persons in Kottayam, Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan said preparations for this year's Karkidaka Vavu bali tharpanam were complete at all main centres. The performance of ritual will be held from 2:30 a.m. on July 24 to 12:42 a.m. the next day. 'Bali tharpanam ceremonies are being held in more than 100 temples under the Travancore Devaswom Board, including the Thiruvallam Parasuramaswamy Temple, Shanghumughom beach, Varkala, Thirumullavaram and sand bed at Aluva. All the preparations have already been completed in collaboration with various departments including KSRTC, police, Fire and Rescue Services, and Revenue,' he said. Steps have been taken to ensure that devotees should not be subjected to financial exploitation under any circumstances. Out of the 20 groups of the TDB, 15 groups have bali tharpanam centres. The rate for offering bali tharpanam in temples under the Board will be ₹100, which is inclusive of all expenses. The rate for the ritual 'thilahoma' inside temples will be ₹65. Deputy Devaswom Commissioners have been appointed as special officers in important temples. TDB is currently carrying out activities such as providing basic facilities for devotees in temples where bali tharpanam is being held, constructing temporary pavilions, erecting barricades, cleaning the temple and its surroundings and deputing priests required for the tharpanam. A special officer is also responsible for coordinating these activities at each location. Services of scuba teams have been ensured at all the dangerous piers. A decision has also been taken to depute more lifeguards at Shanghumughom. The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has informed that arrangements will be made for cleaning activities at the places where bali tharpanam is held within its limits. The board appoints priests and co-priests as required inside the temples, mandapams and piers, where bali tharpanam ceremonies are held. The board has instructed the respective temple devaswoms to provide the necessary items for the ritual, distribute them, assign staff for cleaning, etc.
