GATINEAU, QC, June 10, 2025 /CNW/ - Today, Environment and Climate Change Canada presented a seasonal outlook for summer. Experts predicted higher-than-normal temperatures are likely throughout most of Canada this summer, with cooler-than-normal conditions possible in some northwestern regions along the Beaufort Sea.
This spring, parts of Canada saw an uneven transition out of winter, with many regions experiencing temperature swings. Additionally, much of Canada, particularly in the Prairies, experienced dry conditions. These conditions, in combination with the high likelihood of a warmer-than-normal summer, could increase the risk of wildfires in the coming months—potentially leading to poor air quality and health risks for you and your family.
Understanding the risks of these extreme weather events can help Canadians make informed decisions to protect their health, safety, and property. Canada's Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is an important tool to help people understand what the air quality around them means for their health.
Climate change is causing more frequent and intense severe weather across the country. Environment and Climate Change Canada's weather information and alerts are essential tools in protecting Canadians. The public is urged to regularly monitor weather forecasts, monitor the AQHI and UV Index, take all weather alerts seriously, and get prepared this summer. GATINEAU, QC, July 17, 2025 /CNW/ - Environment and Climate Change Canada is committed to climate research into how and why the country's climate has changed over the decades. Research like this will help us predict future changes and provide Canadians with a deeper understanding of how human-caused climate change affects extreme weather events, like heat waves and cold snaps. This summer, climate scientists are using the Rapid Extreme Weather Event Attribution system to analyze heat waves across Canada to determine how CO2 and other emissions from human activities impacted extreme heat. During the summer of 2024, climate scientists analyzed the 37 most extreme heat events across Canada. In all cases, they found that the heat waves were likely because of climate change. This summer, human-caused climate change already made two heat waves in Canada much more likely to occur. This means that human influence on the climate made the following events at least two to 10 times more likely to occur: Yukon (June 20 to 23) Peak daily high temperature during the heat wave: 22.0 °C Degrees above normal daily high temperature: 6.5 °C Alberta (May 28 to 31) Peak daily high temperature during the heat wave: 28.8 °C Degrees above normal daily high temperature: 11.3 °C Analysis of how weather events are linked to human-caused climate change relies on advanced climate models and observations to compare today's climate with what existed in the pre-industrial era (1850 to 1900). Comparison allows climate scientists to answer the question, "What role did human-caused climate change play in this event?" and provides concrete results that can be quickly understood. This past winter, climate scientists also piloted a new function to analyze climate change's impact on cold weather events. As the global climate continues to warm, extreme cold temperatures are becoming less frequent. This work provides Canadians with direct insight into how human-caused climate change and its devastating impacts are affecting their lives and weather today and see these changes as they unfold. Canadians are encouraged to regularly monitor weather forecasts, take all weather alerts seriously, and get prepared for weather-related events by developing an emergency plan and being ready to adjust their travel plans. Canadians can download the WeatherCAN app to receive weather alert notifications directly on their mobile devices. Alerts help Canadians prepare to face severe weather events, save lives, and reduce the impacts on property and livelihoods. The coldest temperature recorded during the extreme cold event was -34.0 °C. Extreme climate-related weather events are becoming more frequent, severe, and costly. 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 rank in the top 10 years based on insurance claims, surpassed only by the 2016 Fort McMurray fires, the 2013 flooding in Calgary and Toronto, and the 1998 Quebec ice storm (source). St. Clair Region Conservation Authority flood outlook in effect

Social Sharing The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) has issued an early notice of potential flooding in the region. The flood outlook is in effect until 4 p.m. Thursday unless otherwise updated. Thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon brought approximately 80 millimetres of rainfall to the watershed in Sarnia and 55 mm in Warwick, the authority said on its website. Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting the potential for further thunderstorms into mid-day Thursday, which could bring an additional 30 to 50 mm of rain with a peak rainfall intensity of up to 50 mm per hour. That could lead to increased runoff and localized flooding, ponding on roads and flash flooding, particularly in urban areas, the authority said in a news release. Coupled with the heavy rainfall Wednesday, water levels and flows are expected to increase and may elevate into low-lying areas surrounding rivers and streams. The authority is reminding people to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks and swift moving water.

The hot, hot heat that's been blanketing Waterloo region, Guelph and Wellington County this week is expected to come to an end later on Thursday. Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a heat warning for the area earlier this week, warning temperatures would reach daytime highs of up to 34 C, feeling like up tp 42 C with humidity, and there would be little relief overnight. "Showers and thunderstorms moving through Thursday morning are expected to keep daytime temperatures relatively cooler for most regions, bringing an end to the heat event," the weather agency said in its heat warning. "For regions not affected by showers, a cooler airmass will bring an end to the event by Thursday night." Until the heat passes, people are reminded to take precautions such as drinking water, seeking cool and shaded spots and watch for signs of heat exhaustion. The weekend forecast shows more average temperatures for this time of year in the mid-20s: Friday, sunny and 24 C. Saturday, mix of sun and cloud with a chance of showers at 25 C. Sunday, mix of sun and cloud with a chance of showers at 26 C. By Monday, the temperature is expected to start creeping back up to the high 20s with a mix of sun and cloud.
