Bharat Bandh today: Public services likely to be hit; 10 things to know about nationwide strike
NEW DELHI: The central trade unions have announced a nationwide strike for Wednesday, July 9, with over 25 crore workers from various sectors expected to participate.
The strike is also supported by several rural and agricultural labour organisations.
The unions say they are protesting against government policies that help big businesses but hurt workers, farmers, and the poor.

: Here are 10 things to know -
The organisers expect more than 25 crore people across various sectors to take part in the bandh. This includes workers from both organised and unorganised sectors, with strong participation expected from farmers and rural workers as well.
The unions leading the strike include INTUC, AITUC, CITU, HMS, SEWA, AIUTUC, AICCTU, LPF, UTUC, and TUCC. These unions have come together to raise concerns about the government's labour and economic policies.
They are especially critical of the new labour codes, which they claim will weaken workers' rights, extend working hours, and make it harder to form unions or go on strike.
They are also demanding more government jobs, an increase in
MGNREGA wages
and workdays, and similar employment schemes for urban areas.
The unions have submitted a 17-point demand list to the Labour Minister, but they say there has been no serious response from the government.
Banks are expected to remain open, as July 9 is not a holiday listed by the Reserve Bank of India. However, banking services could still be disrupted if bank workers join the strike.
On the other hand, stock markets will function as usual, and there is no scheduled trading holiday.
Schools, colleges, and government offices are expected to remain open as well. No official closure has been announced.
However, public transport services may be affected in many regions, which could lead to delays for commuters, students, and office-goers. In past strikes, participation levels varied by location, and some areas saw last-minute announcements affecting school operations.
This is not the first time the trade unions have organised such a protest. Similar strikes were held on November 26, 2020, March 28–29, 2022, and February 16, 2024, focusing on issues like privatisation of public sector units, job insecurity, and the casualisation of the workforce.
The unions also claimed that government departments were increasingly hiring retired personnel instead of young professionals, citing examples from the Railways, NMDC Ltd, the steel sector, and education services. They argue this trend is harmful in a country where 65 percent of the population is under 35, and unemployment is highest among those aged 20 to 25.

₹5,000 per box and counting: Himachal's apple season begins with a bang as quality fruit reigns
Apple growers in Himachal Pradesh are upbeat as early varieties of the fruit are commanding impressive prices in wholesale markets. With the apple season kicking off early this year, traders at the Dhalli vegetable market in Shimla say farmers are earning between Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000 per 20-kg box, depending on quality and ripeness. Roshan Sharma, a local apple grower, said he received Rs 2,000 per box for the early "Spur" variety. I got Rs 2,000 for a 20 kg box of Spur variety apples . If people don't bring unripe fruit to the market, quality fruit is getting good prices. Since the universal carton was introduced, rates have improved. The season is expected to last longer this time. Everything depends on the weather and road conditions. We mostly send our apples to local mandis like Dhalli and Solan and are happy with the current prices," he told ANI. Narendra Thakur, a trader operating from Dhalli Mandi at Bhatakufar, highlighted the strong beginning of the season, stating that over 1 lakh boxes have arrived in just 20 days. "This time, early varieties like Tydeman and Spur are coming in good quantity. Growers are getting great prices. Some early foreign varieties fetched up to Rs 5,000 per 20 kg box. Rates are ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000. Farmers are advised not to bring under-ripe apples, as the market penalizes poor color and immature fruit. With universal cartons now standard, quality has improved. If the rains continue, the season will likely extend. But unripe produce is affecting market prices negatively," he said. Live Events Ashok Kumar, a buyer who procures apples for markets in Kathmandu (Nepal) and Bihar, echoed the sentiment and praised the quality this year. "The produce is good, and the rates are also satisfying. Farmers who bring properly ripened apples are getting great deals. I have already bought 10,000 to 15,000 boxes, mainly Royal, Red- Gold, and Tydeman varieties. The season has started on time, and I hope both farmers and traders benefit equally. When the fruit is good, everyone wins," Kumar told ANI. According to market estimates, over 10 lakh apple boxes have been sold across Himachal Pradesh's major mandis by July 18. With favorable weather and disciplined harvesting, stakeholders remain optimistic for a strong and extended apple season.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma & WB counterpart Mamata Banerjee engage in a bitter verbal volley over infiltration, identity & language
ANI Himanta Biswa Sarma (left), Mamata Banerjee Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee are engaged in a bitter verbal volley over the Bengali speaking, identity and demographic stated in X, 'The second most spoken language in the country, Bangla, is also the second most spoken language of Assam. To threaten citizens, who want to coexist peacefully respecting all languages and religions, with persecution for upholding their own mother tongue is discriminatory and unconstitutional. This divisive agenda of the BJP in Assam has crossed all limits and people of Assam will fight back. I stand with every fearless citizen who is fighting for the dignity of their language and identity, and their democratic rights.'Sarma replied, 'In Assam, we are not fighting our own people. We are fearlessly resisting the ongoing, unchecked Muslim infiltration from across the border, which has already caused an alarming demographic shift. In several districts, Hindus are now on the verge of becoming a minority in their own land. This is not a political narrative—it's a reality. Even the Supreme Court of India has termed such infiltration as external aggression. And yet, when we rise to defend our land, culture, and identity, you choose to politicize it. 'He continued, 'We do not divide people by language or religion. Assamese, Bangla, Bodo, Hindi—all languages and communities have coexisted here. But no civilisation can survive if it refuses to protect its borders and its cultural foundation. While we are acting decisively to preserve Assam's identity, you, Didi, have compromised Bengal's future—encouraging illegal encroachment by a particular community, appeasing one religious community for vote banks, and remaining silent as border infiltration eats away at national integrity—all just to stay in power. Assam will continue to fight to preserve its heritage, its dignity, and its people—with courage and constitutional clarity'.Controversy started earlier this month when Sarma said that Assamese is the state language and there cannot be blackmail to it. He said that threats by some minority organizations that they will not write Assamese as their mother tongue in the census will only quantify the number of foreigners. All Bodoland Territorial Council Minority Students Union (ABMSU) threatened to replace language in the census. He threatened to replace Assamese with Bengali following the state government's eviction drive in had said, "Language cannot be used as a tool for blackmail. In Assam, Assamese is permanent — both as the state and official language. However, if they write Bengali in electoral rolls or census, it will only quantify the number of foreigners in the state.'ABMSU leader Mainuddin Ali said that Bengali-speaking Muslims would now choose to write Bengali — not Assamese — in public declarations, claiming that Assamese would no longer remain a majority language. All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) affiliated workers' union, the Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress (INTTUC), staged a protest march against the National Register of Citizens(NRC) in Siliguri, condemning the alleged harassment and pushback of migrant Bengali-speaking individuals from several BJP-ruled states. Muslims comprise 34% of the 3.12 crore population of Assam, of which 4% are indigenous Assamese Muslims and the remaining are mostly Bengali- speaking Muslims.
