Sailing-Italy to host 2027 America's Cup in Naples, PM says
ROME (Reuters) -Italy will host the next edition of the America's Cup in 2027 in Naples, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Thursday, the first time for the country to host sailing's most prestigious competition.
Three-times defending champions New Zealand said in March they would no longer seek to host the next edition, citing a lack of economic support from the government.
"The choice of Italy is a choice that makes us proud, because it is a recognition of the very identity of our nation. Without the sea, in fact, we would not be what we are," Meloni said in a statement.
"We look forward to welcoming the America's Cup. Italy will rise to this challenge and show the world once again what it is capable of."
New Zealand retained the title by winning the 37th America's Cup in Barcelona last October over Britain for their fifth triumph.

McIlroy rides luck and crowd support to keep Open dream alive
PORTRUSH (Northern Ireland): Rory McIlroy fed off a wave of his fans' euphoria to shoot a brilliant third-round 66 at Portrush on Saturday and remain in contention to win his second British Open title. The world No. 2 from Northern Ireland struggled for inspiration in opening rounds of 70 and 69, but he birdied three of his first four holes before sinking a stunning 56-foot eagle putt on the par-five 12th to send his fans into raptures. "It was incredible," he said. "It was so much fun. I got off to the perfect start." Another birdie followed at the 15th, a bogey at the 11th hole was the only blemish as he finished on eight under par to stay in the mix to win his sixth major crown. "Then to play those last seven holes at three-under I thought was a good effort," he said. "I played well. I rode my luck at times, but it was an incredible atmosphere out there. I feel like I've at least given myself half a chance tomorrow (today)." The big problem for McIlroy, who became the sixth player to complete golf's Grand Slam of all four major titles by winning the Masters in April, is that world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will start the final round six shots ahead of him. "He's playing like Scottie. I don't think it's a surprise," McIlroy said. "Everyone's seen the way he's played over the last two or three years. He's just so solid. He doesn't make mistakes. He's turned himself into a really consistent putter as well so there doesn't seem to be any weakness there." McIlroy is planning a quiet evening and Sunday morning without any rugby matches to worry about. "Grab some dinner, try to sleep as much as I can," he said. "Don't have any rugby to distract me tomorrow morning. Watched New Zealand-France and the Lions game today." - REUTERS

Rugby-Facing unique French test makes All Blacks better, says coach Robertson
Rugby Union - Autumn Internationals - Ireland v New Zealand - Aviva Stadium, Dublin, Ireland - November 8, 2024 New Zealand head coach Scott Robertson before the match REUTERS/Clodagh Kilcoyne/File Photo (Reuters) -New Zealand coach Scott Robertson believes his team will have gained long-term benefits from overcoming a France side that offered a unique challenge on Saturday as the All Blacks completed a 3-0 series win over the Europeans. Robertson's team were forced to fight their way back into the game after a fast start by the tourists to clinch a come-from-behind 29-19 win in Hamilton that ensured the All Blacks swept the series. "What we take out of it is you've got to play different teams," said Robertson. "They attack differently to anything in Super Rugby, maybe in world rugby, so you train all week in opposition to try and beat the French, and it's really unnatural. "We know what's coming, we've got to stop them. And that's what we've learnt again tonight. They start, they get ahead of us, that fills our hunger. But that's test match footie. You never under-assume anyone and we're better for it." Robertson made 10 changes to the team that started the previous test and the French dominated the opening exchanges to claim a 19-10 lead through back-to-back penalties by scrumhalf Nolann Le Garrec. A try by All Blacks centre Anton Lienert-Brown late in the half reduced the deficit to two points and a strong second-half showing, inspired by replacement Jordie Barrett, led New Zealand to victory. "We know how important the 23 is and Jordie was just so professional when he came on," said Robertson. "He made a massive difference for us. Some of that wasn't pretty, we understand that, but there was a hell of a lot of character and effort off the back of a lot of care. "One thing for us is we've got to get the balance right. Sometimes we can overplay and sometimes we can underplay with our kicking. That's the balance." (Reporting by Michael Church; Editing by Clarence Fernandez)

Cricket-NZ all-rounder Phillips out of Zimbabwe tour with injury
Cricket - ICC Men's Champions Trophy - Semi Final - South Africa v New Zealand - Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, Pakistan - March 5, 2025 New Zealand's Glenn Phillips in action fielding REUTERS/Akhtar Soomro/ File Photo (Reuters) -New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been withdrawn from the team's tour of Zimbabwe because of a groin injury, the country's cricket board said on Friday. Phillips, who suffered the injury during the Major League Cricket final in Dallas, would require "a number of weeks" to recover, New Zealand Cricket said in a statement. The 28-year-old will miss the tri-series, also involving South Africa, and the subsequent two-test series against hosts Zimbabwe. New Zealand are already without batter Finn Allen, who was ruled out of the tri-series with a foot injury suffered in the MLC. "It's obviously disappointing to lose someone of Glenn's calibre," head coach Rob Walter said. "Much like Finn, we really feel for Glenn and that he misses out on this series. "We know he was eager to get out on the field for the Blackcaps and unfortunately, he won't be able to do that for this series. "We know he'll work hard to get himself back onto the park, and I look forward to when that happens." Phillips' replacement in the test squad will be named later, the NZC added.
