Efforts underway to formally establish Media Council
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the process will commence once the Malaysian Media Council Bill that was passed by the Dewan Rakyat on Feb 26 and the Dewan Negara on March 19 receives the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's consent and is officially gazetted.
'We expect to begin the process of officially establishing the Malaysian Media Council within the next few weeks, once the bill receives the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and is gazetted.
'It will take some time due to both administrative and financial aspects, which involve waiting for allocations from the Finance Ministry. Insya-Allah, we hope to have good news about the MMC by HAWANA,' he told reporters after the Communications Ministry's monthly assembly here today.
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching and ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa were also in attendance.
Also present were Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin.
Fahmi previously said the establishment of the MMC, which has been approved by Parliament, is expected to begin functioning by mid-year.
The council will serve as a self-regulatory body to safeguard media freedom and uphold journalistic ethics, while also empowering the media industry in Malaysia.
In his speech earlier, Fahmi said HAWANA 2025 is not just a celebration but a platform to strengthen the media ecosystem and recognise the vital role played by journalists.
'It also aims to reinforce professionalism and responsible freedom of expression among media practitioners. As a curtain-raiser, a pre-launch for HAWANA will take place on June 3 at Wisma Bernama,' he said.
The highlight of HAWANA 2025 will take place on June 14 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim being the guest of honour. The event is expected to gather around 1,000 journalists from Malaysia and abroad.
Organised by the Communications Ministry with Bernama as the implementing agency, HAWANA 2025 will feature a variety of activities, including a Pesta Pantun on May 31, a pre-launch event with strategic partners at Wisma Bernama on June 3, and a media forum jointly hosted with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) on June 14.

Saifuddin: Respect constitution in CJ's appointment
PUTRAJAYA: All parties should respect the constitutional process in the appointment of the new chief justice and refrain from making premature accusations or assumptions, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Saifuddin said the Federal Constitution clearly outlines the procedure under Article 122B, whereby the Yang di-Pertuan Agong appoints the Chief Justice on the advice of the prime minister, after consulting the Conference of Rulers. "In this context, the public's attention is now on the vacancy of the Chief Justice. "The process is clearly spelled out in the Constitution, so there is no need to prejudge or make baseless accusations, particularly those alleging executive interference," he said at a press conference after attending the Home Ministry's monthly assembly here today. Saifuddin said respect for the process is essential, and all parties must refrain from politicising or speculating on ongoing constitutional matters. "If there are allegations of leaks or other claims, let the police investigate. A statement has already been issued confirming that investigations will proceed." He also dismissed claims of executive interference in judicial matters, noting that Article 125 of the Constitution provides a clear mechanism for addressing issues involving judges, including ethical breaches. "If the Constitution is upheld and everyone understands their role, there is no need to involve the executive or blame the government. The monarchy is already carrying out its functions in accordance with the Constitution." Saifuddin warned against attempts to stir public sentiment or create false narratives, saying such efforts only provoke unnecessary reactions. "The prime minister, ministers, and the judiciary are all bound by the same constitutional framework. Let the process take its course." Earlier, it was reported that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed the Conference of Rulers is expected to decide and announce the appointment of the new Chief Justice today. He also confirmed having met with the Conference of Rulers on Tuesday morning. "I had a lengthy discussion with the Conference of Rulers, and it is best to let them decide. "God willing, there will be a clear announcement tomorrow (today) that will dispel all negative perceptions," he said during his keynote address at Malaysia's International Conference on Governance and Integrity 2025 yesterday. The prime minister also acknowledged public concern over the delay in appointing the Chief Justice and the negative perceptions surrounding the matter.

Content Forum welcomes establishment of Malaysian Media Council
KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (Content Forum) has welcomed the establishment of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC). Congratulating the newly appointed founding board members, the Content Forum described the council's formation as a significant milestone in Malaysia's media landscape. It said the MMC's commitment to ethical journalism, media independence, and inclusive representation marks an important step towards strengthening public trust in the media. "As an established industry-led self-regulatory organisation under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, the Content Forum shares the MMC's aspirations for a content ecosystem built on transparency and accountability. "With over two decades of experience in implementing the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Content Code and facilitating content-related complaints across broadcasting, online, and emerging platforms, the Content Forum understands the power and responsibility that comes with credible self-regulation," it said in a statement today. The Content Forum also commended the ministry for its foresight and leadership in championing a collaborative, industry-driven model of media governance. It urged its members and industry partners to support the MMC's growth by participating in its membership drive. "A vibrant and united media sector can only flourish when all stakeholders contribute to shaping its direction," the Content Forum said. Meanwhile, Content Forum chairman Rafiq Razali said the council's creation represents an important moment for the country's media ecosystem and a chance to raise the bar for credible and independent journalism. He said the council's role would meaningfully complement the Content Forum's by elevating standards, promoting accountability, and safeguarding the public interest. "We are proud to support this new chapter and look forward to working in tandem with the MMC to shape a healthier, more responsible media landscape," he said.
