How bitcoin ETFs could ease concerns for crypto-wary investors

Yahoo13 hours ago
Bitcoin (BTC-USD) hit a record high early Monday on July 14, briefly topping $120,000 before settling just under $121,000 as interest in crypto investing grows.
Tim Urbanowicz, chief investment strategist at Innovator Capital Management, joins Market Catalysts to break down how his crypto ETF aims to give investors bitcoin exposure with downside protection.

cryptocurrency flying past 120,000. Now it's hovering just under 121. So, there's a lot of increasing number of ways for investors to invest in crypto. Let's talk about some of them. Tim Urbanowitz is still with me. Innovator capital management, chief investment strategist, and as it happens, you guys have, um, a, um, an ETF, at least one ETF that it offers exposure to Bitcoin, right?
We do, Julie. And you know, you look at this whole conversation we talked about the fis fiscal picture. Obviously, that is making the the Bitcoin conversation even more relevant to our advisors as a store of value. But we take a step back and you look at this pocket of capital, the advisors that are advised that are talking to their clients about, how do you own Bitcoin, institutions that are talking about how do you get Bitcoin in their portfolio, and their critiques historically have been, well, it doesn't, it doesn't generate income and it's too volatile. A lot of the developments that you have seen in the ETF market are helping to address those. And we think are really going to help open up this, this additional pocket of capital for crypto investing. Um, so, you know, one strategy that that we offer QBF, what this strategy is designed to do is give you uncapped upside up to a 74% participation rate, while also limiting your losses to 20% over three months. So we look at something like that, really good way for advisors to have that conversation with their clients, knowing that you do have that floor against losses, really a way, a good way to take down the volatility overall.
So I'm I'm really curious about this product, right? Because, um, I've been doing this long enough that if something sounds too good to be true, probably is. I'm just curious how do you cap that downside when it comes to something like Bitcoin that's so volatile?
Well, so we use options. So we do the whole defined outcome industry landscape's all built on options. We're taking different payoffs that have available in the structured note world for decades, bringing them into the ETF. So for advisors, it gives them the ability to work it into their model portfolios, different client accounts, very simply, very easily without the need to go paperwork across a hundred different accounts. So we're really excited when you think about these type of payoffs, not just on equities which have exploded the category's now at 70 billion and just defined outcome ETFs in the US, which again didn't exist pre 2018, to bring that to an asset class like Bitcoin, I think is critical because again, so many advisors are trying to figure out, our clients are asking us about this. How do we get it into our portfolio without making sure if we go through another crypto winter, we're not blowing them up even with just a two, three, four, 5% allocation.
What's the fee on a product like that look like?
Uh, 79 basis points. And that's pretty typical for, uh, you know, the defined outcome landscape innovators lineup. We launch a lot of those strategies at 79, which, if you look at this in the context of, you know, cheap beta ETFs, it looks expensive, but compared to the structured note world, you know, you're cutting costs down significantly relative to what advisors used to have access to.

Defi Tokens Are Soaring, Leaving Behind OG Coins Like LTC, BCH and XMR

Bitcoin's surge to an all time high on Thursday evoked mixed reactions from altcoins, with some outperforming the largest cryptocurrency by market cap and others lagging behind. And that's split along industry lines. Tokens associated with decentralized finance (DeFi) and those from layer-2 blockchains are outperforming as investors transition to a risk-on approach. Others, such as tron (TRX), bitcoin cash (BCH), litecoin (LTC) and monero (XMR) are, in comparison, barely moving. Even solana (SOL), the darling of the previous drive to record highs, seems to be taking a back seat, rising just 3.9% while the likes of sei (SEI), ethena (ENA) and optimism (OP) are celebrating gains of as much as 28%. "Altcoins are leading the pack in this latest rally," Thomas Perfumo, Kraken's global economist, said in an email. A drop in bitcoin dominance is "reinforcing a broad-based rally with altcoins leading the charge." During the 2017 and 2021 runs to record highs, bitcoin dominance — a measure of BTC's share of the total crypto market —rose rapidly. On Thursday's rally, it fell to 63.5% from 64%, indicating a shift in emphasis toward the altcoin market Crypto markets are cyclical by nature. They run without interruption 24 hours a day against a backdrop of high volatility and low liquidity which can create an emotional trading environment. In previous cycles, altcoins often moved in unison, rising as bitcoin consolidated and dropping en masse when it rose or fell. This time, however, seems different, possibly due to the increased participation of institutions in the the industry. The rise in DeFi tokens can be attributed to increasing institutional interest in ether (ETH), which could pave the way for a search for yield with firms battling to secure the highest returns. The same can be said for layer-2 networks. As institutions run into the Ethereum blockchain's issues with latency and efficiency, they may consider networks like Arbitrum that allow liquidity to flow from decentralized exchanges to staking protocols at a fast rate. That network's ARB token is up 15% in the past 24 hours. Still, Petr Kozyakov, CEO at payments firm Mercuryo, said the rise in altcoins will be short-lived. "While altcoins are also in the green with Ethereum spiking past the $3,000 mark, the underlying 'orange pill' narrative remains steadfastly in place," he said. "Bitcoin's growing status as a store of value is one that more and more big players and institutions are simply unable to ignore." That's not a narrative that finds much support from Arthur Hayes, the BitMEX founder turned fund manager. 'Get ready for a monster alt season,' he told his followers on X after predicting that ETH would reach $10,000 this cycle. If Hayes' prediction holds true, bitcoin could face short-term difficulty as liquidity will inevitably flow into the altcoin market as traders attempt to capture speculative gains. This could also be a hammer blow to the old-school crypto coins, which all lack major catalysts for a boost. Sign in to access your portfolio

Revolutionizing Anesthesia Drug Management and Integrity

Stocking and restocking anesthesia carts is tedious and meticulous — and it's highly regulated. Anesthesiologists have direct and extensive access to controlled drugs in a hospital setting, particularly potent opioids and sedatives, which makes these processes vulnerable to the potential of abuse. Within the anesthesia ecosystem, the doctor has a partner in the stocking and restocking process, and that's the hospital pharmacy staff. This team has so much reporting to do: logging which medications were used by which operating teams and on which patients — data that ultimately get reported to the Drug Enforcement Administration. Errors in any part of the dispensing, stocking, and securing process could result in waste, fines, medication errors, or worse. Hospitals have been on the search for help. Several companies have focused on what's called RAIN RFID. The technology uses passive ultrahigh frequency waves to essentially perform the function of Bluetooth or Wi-Fi for short-range device communication. It's available to hospitals to help with everything from patient tracking to equipment security and compliance. For anesthesia departments, the company Intelliguard created what it calls the Mira Ecosystem. It's built on RAIN RFID and monitors each vial of medication through its entire journey, filling clinical, compliance, and supply chain functions. Tray Setups and Refills Are Quick, Easy, and Traceable According to Intelliguard, about 90% of its systems are currently deployed to serve anesthesia departments. When vials of medication arrive at the pharmacy, a technician applies the Mira tag to each vial, and immediately, the system begins tracking each individual one. 'Our system reads each of the 96-bit unique IDs and then associates those unique IDs with the medication. So now each of those IDs is associated with rocuronium, for example, and the company that made it, the serial number, and the expiration and the lot number,' said Paul Elizondo, Intelliguard's chief innovation officer. 'From then on, when our system sees that 96-bit unique ID, it associates it with the medication in a database. It displays that on the screen, and we know exactly what that medication is now.' Paul Elizondo The system tracks each vial of medication throughout its journey at the hospital, giving pharmacy managers and hospital administrators instant, real-time visibility into where each vial is and when. In terms of daily pharmacy tasks, making up medication trays for anesthesiologists is made nearly foolproof, reducing medication errors. 'The hospitals using our system will place these RFID-tagged medications into the tray, then they will place that tray into our enclosure,' said Elizondo. 'In 6 seconds, we read every single tag in that tray, and we let them know if that formula, if what's in the tray, matches the formulary to which they're building right at that time.' The system can also check to ensure there are no expired or recalled medications in the tray. The real-time savings come, though, when the anesthesiologist returns the tray at the end of the day. Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego is using this system. Performance improvement pharmacist Ann McKinstry explained some of the ways that she's seen return on investment gains. 'Pinpointing the medication location has allowed for a more rapid response to expiry, recalls, and patient care events,' McKinstry said. 'Inpatient pharmacy inventory is tightened by offering a streamlined data review to analyze usage and reducing waste by tightening supply on hand. In addition, RFID tags allow accurate controlled substance reconciliation by monitoring usage, waste, and replenishment down to the minute.' Real-Time Tracking of Medication Location Saves a Life Knowing exactly where your medications are on a real-time basis isn't just important: It can be a matter of life and limb. For example, if a patient with a deadly North American pit viper bite is rolled into your emergency department, as happened at a Bartow, Florida hospital at 1 AM on May 4 — you'd definitely want to know if you have antivenom on hand. Bartow was out. They reached out to Prodigy Health, distributor of specialty pharmaceuticals that supplies medicines to hospitals on a consignment basis. Prodigy runs a 24-hour switchboard and uses RAIN to gain visibility into what is being dispensed by each hospital. The antivenom was quickly located at a hospital in Lutz, Florida, one that had a RAIN RFID cabinet. The request was made, the antivenom was transferred, and the day was saved. Ty Dishman Before this technology, 'This process was manual and time-consuming. Now, with reliable data integrating into our system every 6 seconds, we're able to provide immediate, confident answers to customer inquiries about medication availability and delivery timelines,' said Ty Dishman, CEO of Prodigy Health. 'Instead of saying, 'I think it's there — let me check and call you back,' we can act quickly and efficiently, ensuring life-saving medications are mobilized without delay.' The Competitive Landscape RFID systems are nothing new in the healthcare environment. They're commonly used to track medical equipment and inventory, as well as in staff badging systems. Its use in medication management is fairly recent. Terso Solutions offers a similar suite to the Mira Ecosystem, with the exception of Intelliguard's direct-to-operating room tray system; Avery Dennison Medical and Healthcare provides a wide range of pharmaceutical labeling options, and some options include RFID.

Don't Want to Upgrade to Windows 11? Microsoft Offers Free Windows 10 Security Updates

The era of Windows 10 is almost at an end. In October 2025, Microsoft is ending support for Windows 10 and stopping security support. Initially Microsoft was offering a one-year extended security update for $30, but we've got good news. Microsoft has added a free option, allowing you to stick with Windows 10 for another year. However, in order to access it, users will need to use cloud backup and connect it with their OneDrive account. The ability to get free updates on Windows 10 is a pretty big deal because it is still the most widely used Windows OS, accounting for just over 53% of installs as of May 2025. That leaves millions of people without security support in just a few months unless they upgrade. So the cloud backup option gives users a way out without costing them any money. The only potential issue is OneDrive. Anyone with a Microsoft account gets up to 5GB of storage for free. However, as The Verge points out, some backups may exceed this limitation, requiring users to purchase a monthly or yearly plan. At $1.99 per month for 100GB of cloud storage, a year of OneDrive still costs less than the $30 for a year of additional security updates, but it still may cause frustration among some users. Windows 10 was released in July 2015, more than a decade ago. Microsoft will be rolling out the ESU wizard in July 2025. Microsoft How to get Windows 10 security updates for free Per Microsoft's blog post, there are now three options for people who want to stay on Windows 10 and still receive security updates. Use Windows Backup to sync settings to the cloud via OneDrive. Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. Redeeming those points can buy you one year of security updates. Pay $30 for the extended security updates program. Users will be presented with these options starting in July, which is when Microsoft plans to roll out the sign-up wizard for the Extended Security Updates program. Signing up for this option will guarantee updates until Oct. 13, 2026, although businesses will have the option to purchase up to three years of additional updates. So, this isn't a long-term solution, but rather gives consumers more time to upgrade to Windows 11. It's been an uphill battle for Microsoft as people have been resilient in upgrading their existing hardware. There are myriad differences between the two operating systems, but Microsoft's string of unpopular decisions along with Windows 11 compatibility issues have kept the prior generation OS around a lot longer than it normally would be.
