Airdrie win sets up Premier Sports Cup showdown cracker
Goals from Euan Henderson and Lewis McGrattan handed Airdrie a 2-1 Premier Sports Cup win over Montrose last night, that sets up a C 'winner takes it all' showdown at home to Alloa Athletic at New Broomfield on Saturday.
A late rally from Montrose wasn't enough to stop the Diamonds from going top of the group on goal difference, with both themselves and Alloa on maximum nine points from their three games so far.
Two goals in six second-half minutes sent Airdrie through.
Henderson opened the scoring in 56 minutes, when he darted down the left flank and tried to pick out Chris Mochrie. Though the Diamonds No.7 didn't get a touch on the ball, he did enough to put off the Montrose defence and the cross squeezed in at the far post.
McGrattan netted the second in 62 and Henderson was again the architect, driving in from the left and forcing a save from Campbell Millar, and while Henderson was tripped by a defender, McGrattan steered the ball in.
Ewan Loudon beat Cade Melrose with a powerful effort from just inside the box, as the Diamonds conceded for the first time in the group stages, but it wasn't enough to prevent Airdrie from going through.
Airdrie had other chances to score, and in 10 minutes Jamie Barjonas sent Henderson through on Aaron Clark, who did well to block with his foot.
Loudon had a chance to net the rebound from a Melrose save, but Sean McGinty bravely blocked to keep the score at 0-0.
Alex King and Liam McStravick had efforts blocked, before Dylan MacDonald's cross was headed wide by McStravick.
McStravick sent an effort curling past the top corner as the half remained goal-less.
Airdrie took the lead, and Mochrie sent an effort whistling past a post moments later.
Henderson curled an effort over in 71 minutes, following good play by Mochrie.
Montrose pulled a goal back and a flurry of free kicks around the Airdrie box made for a nervy end to the match, but the closest the hosts came was when sub Matheus Machado sent an effort narrowly over.

Aberdeen to use Scottish Cup triumph to try and overcome Hearts hoodoo as defender discusses race for third

Aberdeen last left Tynecastle with a win in 2017 after a 2-1 victory and neither side have been able to inflict an away defeat to each other since that match. However, Dons defender and Scottish Cup winner Mats Knoester is confident his side can overcome their rivals as they face each other on the opening day of the Scottish Premiership season. The Jambos head into the match on the back of a perfect Premier Sports Cup group stage while Jimmy Thelin's side have not been in competitive action since beating Celtic at Hampden at the end of May. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad On the prospect of facing Hearts, the 26-year-old said, 'They're a good team, a big team as well. I think it's going to be an exciting game. It's not going to be an easy game away, but I think it's going to be interesting to see. Always the first game in the season is interesting to see how the teams are after the pre-season.' Knoester also reflected on the cup final victory and how breaking their hoodoo against Celtic can help them in this game. Aberdeen's record against the Hoops, especially at Hampden Park, has not been one they look back on fondly. 'We're aware that it's a tough game,' the Dutch centre back said. 'Away at Hearts, but I also think the past doesn't really matter. And if I can go back to Celtic at Hampden, we don't have a really good record against Celtic and then you win the game. So, in football, I don't think you should go too much back to the past and then look forward.' Aberdeen and Hearts to battle for third spot There is also the matter of the battle for third coming into this season, as both sides are tipped to challenge each other for the position in the league table, with former Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes now in charge of Hearts. The Jambos' Edinburgh rivals Hibs, who finished third last season, are also likely to have a say in that challenge. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The former Heracles Almelo and Ferencváros defender admitted this will be the case in the coming season, saying: 'Yeah, if we look a bit further, I think they're also one of the competitors. Of course, as Aberdeen, you're one of the bigger teams, and Hearts is that as well. So, in that way, I think we should compete with each other but I prefer to just go week by week. I do that with myself and also with the team and their goals.' Knoester also knows that Jimmy Thelin's side will have a target on their backs after their famous cup win but he is confident they won't see it as a burden, adding: Yeah, it can be. [It's] no problem. If they want to see it like that, it's fine.' Why St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson is 'concerned' by Killian Phillips form
The Republic of Ireland international has made a positive start to the new season. Stephen Robinson yesterday admitted in-form Killian Phillips could already be playing his way out of Paisley. The all-action midfielder bagged a brace as St Mirren beat Ayr United 2-1 to qualify for the last 16 of the Premier Sports Cup as group winners. Phillips has been a revelation since arriving at the SMiSA Stadium — with last season's loan move from FA Cup winners Crystal Palace becoming permanent this summer. He landed a haul of player-of-the-year awards before becoming a full Republic of Ireland international when he came off the bench against Senegal and started at Luxembourg. Buddies boss Robinson knows the only way is up for the talented 23-year-old and he believes he will keep on getting better. 'If he keeps scoring goals that will be a real concern for us — but a good concern,' the gaffer said. 'He has continued on from where he left off last season with his form and energy. He is a driving force in the team. 'He is turning up with goals in big games and long may that continue. When you are training [internationally] with different players from different backgrounds who have different managers, it helps your education and learning process. 'But he is a very grounded, down-to-earth boy who gives absolutely everything for the football club and he will continue to grow. We will enjoy him while we can.' Robbo added: 'This is where we are as a football club — we put people on platforms. Killian didn't have loads of offers when he came to us but has grown as a boy and grown as a player. 'He will be the first to say the football club and coaching staff have been fantastic for him. He has snatched his chance and is an international footballer now. 'He will get attention but we don't need to sell. We haven't had any contact at the moment. When Killian leaves, it will be for good money and he will deserve his move. His trajectory is going to where we want it to go.' Saints didn't have it all their own way yesterday once Kevin Holt pulled a goal back for Ayr but it was a case of job done for Robbo. 'We felt Roland [Idowu] caused them problems and the game should have been dead and buried,' he added. 'But Ayr are a good side with a very good manager and we expected a response. 'We lost a goal from a set-play but we had numerous chances to finish the game off. If you don't do that, it makes it a little bit nervy. But we stood strong and managed the game okay. There were some very good performances.' Saints will face Hearts in the last 16 and Robbo said: 'To get through is good and to get a home draw is good. We will take the positives out of that. 'It could have been an easier draw than Hearts, of course, but I got to a cup final last time when we had to beat Hearts, Rangers and Aberdeen to get there so there's no reason why we can't do the same. 'We haven't done it so far [go deep in a domestic cup competition] but it certainly is our goal. We're potentially not going to win the league this season but there's always a chance in the cup. If you want to progress, you have to beat the better teams – and Hearts are one of the better teams.'

Motherwell goalkeeper a target for Airdrie ahead of season opener
The Diamonds are looking to strengthen between the sticks Airdrieonians are targeting the signing of Motherwell goalkeeper Matty Connelly on loan. Lanarkshire Live Sport understands the Fir Park shot-stopper, who was handed his first team debut for the Steelmen earlier this month in a 2-1 win over Peterhead in the Premier Sports Cup, is being pursued by the Diamonds ahead of Saturday's Championship opener at home to Ross County. Rhys McCabe's side are currently light in the goalkeeping department with goalie coach David Hutton named on the bench for Saturday's cup defeat to Alloa, while 20-year-old Cade Melrose started between the sticks. Hutton has been a substitute in all of the club's cup matches, with Melrose taking the gloves. So the Diamonds are keen to strengthen in that department and the answer could lie with Connelly, who played regularly on loan at East Kilbride last season on their way to the Lowland League title and promotion to League Two. Connelly - who signed a new one year deal with Motherwell last month - had been expected to return to Kilby this season, but an injury to Fir Park No.1 Aston Oxborough in pre-season meant the Steelmen held on to their youth academy product for their Premier Sports Cup games, which concluded last midweek. However, with Oxborough returning in Friday night's friendly against Hertha Berlin off the bench and second choice Calum Ward starting that game ahead of Saturday's Premiership opener with Rangers, it is understood 22-year-old Connelly could be looking to go out on loan again. Connelly recently said in an interview with Motherwell's club media: 'The loans have been absolutely pivotal. 'I've always said I'd rather go out and play instead of just being a number two or a three. The excitement of playing games is the most important thing and especially getting the experience. 'My first loan at Gretna, which was brilliant, it was only a short period I was there before I got the facial injury, it was so benefical. What a place it is, great place to start. Moving to Stranraer, that was cut short but East Kilbride was so good. 'That's where I played the majority of my games, I think I played just under 50 games there last year. I've been there twice and had the chance to go back there which was a no brainer. 'Getting those games and experience is vital. It moulds you and gets you one step closer to playing first-team football here.'
