Bournemouth finalising RB Leipzig coup as Cherries hold defender contract talks

Daily Mirror20 hours ago
Bournemouth are poised to confirm key changes to Andoni Iraola's backroom team as the Cherries continue to pursue a number of transfer targets for the ambitious Spaniard
Bournemouth are finalising the impressive capture of RB Leipzig club doctor Robert Percy Marshall. Marshall, who worked with Cherries stars Justin Kluivert and Tyler Adams during a seven-year spell with the German outfit, is set to replace departing performance director Jay Mellette.
Mirror Football understands Mellette is poised to return to owner Bill Foley's ice-hockey team Vegas Golden Knights after two years at the Vitality Stadium.

Marshall's impending arrival on the South Coast remains subject to a language exam plus a successful visa application, respectively.

Meanwhile, Bournemouth are in active talks with defender Marcos Senesi over a new contract but an agreement with the 28-year-old is not yet close.
The Argentine international centre-back has attracted interest from Villarreal, Real Sociedad and Roma as he's now entered the final 12 months of his existing deal.
Still, the Cherries would like to keep Senesi and are also pursuing a move for £30million-rated Lille centre-back Bafode Diakite in a bid to strengthen Andoni Iraola's backline. The Spaniard has already lost Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez to Real Madrid and Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain are refusing to give up on Illia Zabarnyi despite seeing two bids rejected.
Bournemouth are holding firm on their £60million valuation of the Ukrainian, who is keen to join the newly-crowned European champions.
The Cherries have also shown an interest in Lazio's Mario Gila but there is recognition a deal would likely prove complex as Real Madrid have a 50 per cent sell-on clause.

Club Brugge defender Joel Ordonez is also on Bournemouth's radar but they are yet to approach the Belgian club despite suggestions a bid has been lodged. Personal terms with Lille's Diakite are believed to be in place but so far, an agreement has not been reached with Lille.
Nantes' Nathan Zeze, a France U21 international, is another name of interest as Bournemouth now focus their effort on bolstering the numbers within Iraola's squad.
Earlier this week, the Cherries confirmed that star forward Antoine Semenyo, who was being eyed by the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham, has signed a new lucrative contract to extend his stay at the Vitality Stadium.

Tour de France 2025 live: Stage 1 result as Jasper Philipsen sprints to victory as Evenepoel loses time in crosswinds

Belgian Jasper Philipsen won the opening stage of the Tour de France, a 184.9km ride around Lille, to claim the first yellow jersey of this year's race. The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider out-sprinted Eritrean Biniam Girmay and Norway's Soren Waerenskjold after crosswinds had caused chaos in the final 15 kilometres. Jonas Vingegaard and Visma Lease-a-Bike were right to the fore, forcing a split by pushing the pace, with fellow general classification contenders Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic on the wrong side and losing 39 seconds come the finish. Tadej Pogacar, however, remained right on his rival's wheel. Come the finish, though, there seemed little doubt that victory would be Philipsen's with the Belgian comfortably the fastest finisher in the front group and with several teammates for company. He will wear yellow on Stage Two, with plenty more opportunities to come for the sprinters later in the tour. Lawrence Ostlere5 July 2025 18:19 Filippo Ganna abandons Tour de France after crash Another rider to go down was former world time trial champion Filippo Ganna, and the Italian later abandoned the race, a huge blow for the Ineos Grenadiers. In summing up the stage Geraint Thomas, riding his final Tour de France, said: "I should have stopped last year, to be honest. It was very stressful. "It's a big, big shame to lose Pippo. I saw the crash and it didn't look too bad but he gave his head a bit of a knock, so there's a concussion call which is the right thing, but it's a big, big shame to lose him." Lawrence Ostlere5 July 2025 18:02 Benjamin Thomas assumes King of the Mountains jersey Philipsen became the first pure sprinter to pull on yellow since Alexander Kristoff won the opening stage in Nice in 2020, but it was far from a straightforward bunch finish as strong crosswinds in northern France added to the stress of the opening day of the Tour, producing chaos. Benjamin Thomas, the Olympic Madison champion, ended the day in the king of the mountains jersey but only after crashing into Matteo Vercher as they crossed the line battling for the point at the top of the cobbled climb of Mont Cassel. Thomas had been part of an original five-man breakaway reeled in before the mid-point of the stage as teams fought for position. Lawrence Ostlere5 July 2025 17:43 Philipsen: 'I have dreamt about the yellow jersey' "It's really amazing," the Belgian said. "My 10th victory is something I will never forget. The team performance was incredible. I think we were there all day. It was very nervous but we knew today could be our day and we have to be in the front and we were there in the split. "The team did amazing and in the end we could just use our strength and finish it off... "I have dreamt about (the yellow jersey). Already I had the green jersey from two years ago but to have the yellow jersey hanging somewhere in my house in the next years is going to be amazing." Lawrence Ostlere5 July 2025 17:28 Stage summary: Philipsen grabs yellow jersey in chaotic opening Jasper Philipsen won a chaotic opening stage of the Tour de France to take the first yellow jersey of the race. Philipsen took his 10th career Tour stage but the first to put him into yellow as he beat Biniam Girmay in a much-reduced bunch sprint after crosswinds split the peloton to pieces. Overall hopefuls Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic were both caught out, conceding 39 seconds to the main favourites Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard, with the Dane having done much to instigate the splits inside the last 20 kilometres of the 185km stage that started and finished in Lille. Fewer than 40 riders made it into the front group but Philipsen's Alpecin-Deceuninck team had four of them and they made it count, putting together an ideal lead-out for Philipsen to comfortably beat Girmay and Soren Waerenshjold to the line. Lawrence Ostlere5 July 2025 17:13 Favourites lose time on opening stage Yes, that's confirmed - already nearly 40 seconds lost to Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar for the other two members of the so-called 'Big Four'. That's a lot to claw back before the lumpier stuff is even close to starting. Here's the finish: Harry Latham-Coyle5 July 2025 16:46 Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic lose time We're awaiting the official results, but it looks like it might be as much as 39 seconds lost by Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic - brutal on the opening day. Your best bits of transfer stories and gossip from the world of Scottish football this Saturday morning: Rodgers breaks silence on Kuhn Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed forward Nicolas Kuhn is on the verge of joining Italian side Como and that his departure is an example of why playing for the Scottish champions can be so beneficial. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Celtic are set to rake in £16.5million for a player they bought 18 months ago for £3m from Rapid Vienna and Rodgers is pleased that the transfer is taking place earlier in the window so he can source reinforcements. 'We've virtually agreed between the club and Como so it looks at this point that he'll be on his way, but we just have to wait for confirmation,' said Rodgers after Celtic's 1-0 win over Queen's Park on Friday night. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers. | SNS Group 'I think it's very clear, the model of Celtic. He's come in and in the 18 months he's done absolutely fantastic for us. He was aware of interest towards the end of last season and that sort of followed through. 'Other teams have joined in that interest over the summer and that's why a lot of the young players come. It's a wonderful, brilliant club to come to develop, and improve. And you can see within a short period of time, 18 months, he's now getting the move that he wants. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Of course, we want to succeed but a lot of these players they come in with the notion that they can develop and improve. They're at a brilliant club but they get the opportunity to go on and earn three or four times more in salary and that's something that will always be a challenge for the likes of ourselves. 'But he's done brilliant for us in the 18 months and if he does end up going and signing up a Como then it's great business all round. 'I think it really helps us. The earlier, the better, really. Because if a player wants to go then I don't see the point in them hanging about. Really, if you can get the deal done and you get the valuation, what you think is right, then do it, move on and look to get the replacements in.' Nicolas Kuhn is set to join Como from Celtic. | SNS Group Rodgers also confirmed that Polish defender Maik Nawrocki is heading for German second-tier side Hannover on a season-long loan. The 24-year-old has been hindered by injury, managing just 18 appearances for the Hoops over the course of his two seasons after joining from Legia Warsaw in 2023. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Maik's never really consistently been able to stay fit and really take that spot,' said the manager. 'This time last year, he started a game for us (at Ayr) and then he got injured and was out for a number of weeks. So, he's had a couple of years where he hasn't quite got the games that he would have liked. So it's important that he goes out and plays.' Rodgers welcomed his fifth signing of the summer on Friday when 23-year-old Japanese defender Hayato Inamura joined on a four-year deal from J-League side Albirex Niigata. However, the manager explained that his latest recruit will be bedded in gently to life at Celtic. Asked if he would be ready to go straight into the first team, Rodgers said: 'No, he won't be. He's a part of the investment of the club. We'll assess and see where he's at as a young player and then it's whether he stays with the squad or whether he has to go out on loan.' McInnes gives Penrice his blessing Hearts head coach Derek McInnes revealed his disappointment at not being able to work with James Penrice, but insisted the left-back deserves his move to AEK Athens after the Greek side agreed a fee in the region of £2m for the 26-year-old. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Penrice joined Hearts on a free transfer last summer and was one the of the Jambos' most impressive players. He left the team's training camp in Spain on Friday morning and is expected to have his transfer confirmed imminently. 'AEK have met our valuation,' McInnes said, 'which is brilliant money back and a great opportunity for James. In an ideal world, I'm just in the door and I've wanted to work with him for a while, but sometimes you've got to be fair. 'He deserves credit. He was outstanding in a tough season last year. It is a fantastic opportunity for him. Obviously it still needs to be concluded, but he looks to be on his way.' James Penrice is set to leave Hearts for AEK Athens. | SNS Group Rangers close in on defender Rangers are reportedly closing in on the arrival of Wolves centre-half Nasser Djiga on a loan deal for the upcoming season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Talks have progressed between the Ibrox club and Djiga, who moved to the English Premier League side from Red Star Belgrade five months ago for £10m but has struggled to make an impact at first-team level. Rangers want to reinforce their options in the heart of their defence and are working on a move for experienced Leicester City centre-back Conor Coady. Finnish starlet joins United Jim Goodwin is excited about the 'energy' Dario Naamo will bring to Dundee United after the Finland Under-21 international wing-back joined on a season-long loan from Austrian second-tier side SKN St Polten. The Tannadice club revealed they have an option to buy the 20-year-old, who previously played with Honka and SJK in his homeland before moving to Austria last year. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Dario Naamo has joined Dundee United. | SNS Group 'Dario boasts maturity beyond his years, having competed in senior football from the outset of his flourishing career,' manager Goodwin told the United website. 'He personifies the modern-day wing-back – energetic, combative and technically accomplished, with a desire to impact the game at both ends of the park. 'Furthermore, he'll provide both depth and quality to our ever-strengthening playing group, adding healthy competition to his position. We're excited to integrate him with the rest of his team-mates and look forward to closely tracking his progression as a player and a person during his time at Tannadice.' Dundee bring in Hay Dundee have announced the signing of forward Ashley Hay on a two-year deal from Brentford. The 21-year-old spent two years with the Bees after joining in the summer of 2023 from Hitchin and also had a loan spell at Cheltenham. Hay, who was the joint-leading scorer for Brentford B in the 2023/24 season, will now link up again with new Dundee boss Steven Pressley, who left his role as the Bees' head of individual player development to take over at Dens Park in June. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I am excited to be here and can't wait to meet all the boys,' Hay said on Dundee's website. 'I was with Steven at Brentford. He came to me and my agent, and proposed for me to come here. I heard about the project and couldn't wait to get down.

Carlos Alcaraz relationship challenges, Jannik Sinner behaviour and ban reason

Carlos Alcaraz is chasing a third straight Wimbledon title after back-to-back final victories over Novak Djokovic - but what else do we know about the Spaniard away from the courts? Carlos Alcaraz is eyeing his third consecutive Wimbledon win after taking down Novak Djokovic in the finals of the past two years. The Spanish sensation has been in formidable form, notably rallying from behind to clinch the French Open against Jannik Sinner in what was an electrifying match. Having also lifted the trophy at Queen's Club for the second time with the HSBC Championships under his belt, Alcaraz is aiming for another Wimbledon victory that could catapult him into the annals of tennis history at the tender age of 22. ‌ Yet, despite the buzz surrounding his success streak, Alcaraz maintains his eyes are only set on the prize, not the history books. Prior to Wimbledon, he said: "I'm coming here thinking that I really want to win the title, I really want to lift the trophy. I'm not thinking about how many players have done it, winning three Wimbledons in a row." ‌ Off the court, Alcaraz's life is just as scrutinised, especially regarding personal matters such as his love life and his relationships with other professionals. Here's what we know about the Spanish sensation... Girlfriend challenges Speaking with the Sunday Times last year, Alcaraz candidly revealed the challenges of finding love amidst the constant travel demanded by the sport. He said: "I am single. "I am looking for someone. It can be difficult as a tennis player to meet the right person because you are travelling all the time." He adopted a similar tone with Vogue the year before too, telling the publication: "It's hard to find the person who can share things with you if you're always in different parts of the world." Sporting rivalry Reflecting on Alcaraz's triumph over Sinner at the French Open, 1989 Roland Garros winner Michael Chang told Clay Tennis: "The generation that we followed was very competitive, [players] didn't really talk to each other. Alcaraz and Sinner have a very healthy respect for one another. Different than in years past, like a McEnroe-Connors or a McEnroe-[Ivan] Lendl. There was no friendship there." ‌ He added: " [Roger] Federer and [Rafael] Nadal changed the culture in the locker room. On court, it's business. You want to play your best and beat your opponent, but off court they were kind to everyone, whether you were world No. 2 or No. 100 in doubles. "Roger, Rafa, and even Novak are responsible for that transformation. They treated everyone the same and were kind. I think that respect has carried over to the current generation because they respect everyone." ‌ Party ban Speaking to El Laguero, Juan Carlos Ferrero explained that his partying plans after the French Open may have been toned down through his guidance. He explained: "Yesterday, I told him to have a good time, that he deserved it, but to remember he's a tennis player at all times. "We know how he is and these days do him good. When he returns, he comes back with a clear head, renewed. It's no longer about the word 'party', but about disconnecting. Being with his friends and not thinking about tennis and being a normal 22-year-old, and returning to work with enthusiasm." Alcaraz himself is no stranger to the nightlife, candidly speaking of his fondness for partying in his Netflix special, 'Carlos Alcaraz: My Way'. He said (via the Express): "Look, in Ibiza... I'm not going to lie to you. It's about partying and going out. I went there to let loose. I don't know if it's right to say it that way, but I went out. "I made the most of it. On my return, of course, I won at Queen's and Wimbledon. I'm not saying I won because of the party, but those days did me good. And if things go well, I have to repeat."
