Panthers cut ex-Broncos LB for heartbreaking reason
The Carolina Panthers made a surprise move on Tuesday, releasing veteran linebacker Josey Jewell. The reason for his release is a reminder of the harsh realities of the potential side effects of playing in the NFL. Jewell, 30, suffered a concussion on Dec. 22, 2024, and he is still experiencing concussion symptoms seven months later, according to Anthony Rizzuti of Panthers Wire. The Panthers' website wrote that Jewell "wanted to prioritize his health and recovery and be considerate of his teammates," indicating that the linebacker was part of the decision to step away from the team. If he recovers, Jewell might re-sign with the Panthers down the road. Jewell originally entered the league as a fourth-round draft pick out of Iowa with the Denver Broncos in 2018. After spending the first six years of his career in Denver, Jewell signed with Carolina in 2024. Broncos Country wishes him the best in his recovery from the concussion symptoms. Elsewhere on the ex-Bronco front, former third-round pick McTelvin Agim signed with the Cincinnati Bengals, and K.J. Cloyd, who was cut by Denver in May, worked out for the Green Bay Packers this week. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Did you know: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans. New York Giants have modest expectations in 2025: Field a 'competitive team'
The New York Giants are 9-25 since the beginning of the 2023 NFL season. General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll barely escaped with their jobs. Giants co-owner John Mara feels the duo can still turn his team into winners. It won't be easy, but Schoen believes the Giants could be on their way. He is not shooting for a "worst to first" season in 2025. A winning season will do. On Tuesday, Schoen was asked if he felt he had built a playoff team. "We're just starting camp today," Schoen told reporters. "I understand the question, but the expectation is we're going to be a competitive team, a competitive roster. And again, all that starts today." The Giants lost eight games last season by one score or less. They were the best 3-14 team one could imagine. Their biggest issue has been their inability to sustain drives, creating big plays and, yes, score points. With a new quarterback unit led by veteran Russell Wilson, the Giants should be able to put up more points this year. Combine that with the addition of rookie linebacker Abdul Carter on defense, and Big Blue should be the competitive team Schoen thinks they can be. See where NFL coaches, execs and scouts ranked Broncos' safeties
NFL staffers apparently feel that the Denver Broncos have a bunch of players just outside the top spots at their respective positions. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler interviewed NFL executives, coaches and scouts to have them rank the top 10 players at 11 positions ahead of the 2025 season. Broncos outside linebacker Nik Bonitto was named an honorable mention at pass rusher, and Zach Allen got an honorable mention nod at defensive tackle. The latest Denver defender to receive an honorable mention is safety Brandon Jones, who was unable to crack the top 10 behind Kyle Hamilton, Brian Branch, Xavier McKinney, Jessie Bates, Kerby Joseph, Derwin James, Antoine Winfield, Budda Baker, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Julian Love. Jones was second among the honorable mentions, behind Jevon Holland and above C.J. Gardner-Johnson. "I think he's a little underrated," an unnamed veteran AFC scout said of Jones. Talanoa Hufanga, who just joined the Broncos this offseason, was listed among seven safeties who also received votes. So, all tallied up, NFL staffers believe Denver has two of the top 22 safeties in the league. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X!
