Wimbledon maverick reveals Sir Alex Ferguson phone call still gives him goosebumps

The Sun01-07-2025
A SIR ALEX FERGUSON phone call in 2016 still gives British wheelchair tennis ace Andy Lapthorne goosebumps.
The legendary ex- Manchester United boss called Lapthorne ahead of the 2016 Paralympic games in Rio.
The 34-year-old credits the call for life changing results, according to a recent interview with The Times.
He said: "That phone call is still giving me goosebumps."
Lapthorne - who has cerebral palsy which affects his ability to stand for extend periods or fully straighten his arms - competes in wheelchair tennis in quad singles and doubles events .
He has been ranked no.1 in the world in quad singles, and is a 16-time Grand Slam winner in quad doubles, a record he will attempt to improve at Wimbledon next month.
By the time of the call, Lapthorne already had one singles and five doubles Grand Slam wins - but it was not a great tennis players that Ferguson compared him to.
Lapthorne continued: "We chatted about Eric Cantona, because he had been told what I was like, a bit of a maverick.
"He was talking about embracing that, but also about listening to people that know me."
The call was not the end of Sir Alex's support of Lapthorne, who received an email of encouragement from the iconic manager following his semi-final victory later in the tournament.

Sir Alex's call spurred the Brit all the way to the finals in Rio, where he was eventually defeated in straight sets by Australian Dylan Alcott.
The winning influence did not fade with that loss though, as Lapthorne went on to become a serial winner in wheelchair tennis, especially in the quad doubles.
He remains the fourth ranked player in quad singles, and the third ranked player in quad doubles.
Earlier this week he brought home silverware in both disciplines on home soil at the Eastbourne Open - continuing to prove Sir Alex's advice right after almost a decade.
Lapthorne will take to the Wimbledon court with tennis partner Greg Slade next month to attempt to win his third doubles trophy at the event, having last won it in 2021.

Mimi Rhodes makes unusual hole-in-one at Women's Open

England's Mimi Rhodes found an unusual way to score low on a tough day by sinking a remarkable hole-in-one in her final round at the AIG Women's Open. High winds made for difficult conditions at Royal Porthcawl on Sunday but, with a fortuitous ricochet off her playing partner's ball, Rhodes aced the par-three fifth. Rhodes, who began six shots off the overnight lead of nine under held by Miyu Yamashita, had the benefit of following Stephanie Kyriacou off the tee. The Australian went close to a hole-in-one herself with a shot that hit the green and came to rest inches from the cup. Rhodes then played a very similar shot and, luckily for her, Kyriacou's ball was handily placed for it to deflect in off. Kyriacou was still able to hole her short putt for a deserved birdie. Meanwhile, Yamashita birdied the fourth to open up a three-shot lead as nearest challenger Kim A-lim dropped back to seven under following back-to-back bogeys. Rhodes' compatriot Charley Hull then cut the gap to two with consecutive birdies at the fifth and sixth.

Mimi Rhodes scores amazing hole-in-one as ball goes in-off snooker style at Women's Open

The final round of the Women's Open at Royal Porthcawl has delivered one of the most extraordinary moments in modern major history after the English golfer Mimi Rhodes produced a hole-in-one which bore remarkable resemblance to an in-off snooker shot. Australia's Steph Kyriacou had already hit her shot to within inches of the hole at the 212-yard 5th when Rhodes stepped on to the tee. The 23-year-old's iron shot bounced from the front of the green towards the hole. The ball duly kissed off that of Kyriacou and into the bottom of the cup for an ace. 'Did that go in?!' a stunned Rhodes asked. The episode was even more remarkable because Kyriacou had already made a hole-in-one at Porthcawl, at the 8th during round two. This was Rhodes's second ace of the season. It is unclear what she will give Kyriacou as a thanks for the assist. The incredible moment conjured memories of Louis Oosthuizen and the 2016 Masters, where the South African made a hole-in-one at the 16th in similar style. Oosthuizen's ball was diverted towards the hole via that of JB Holmes.
