'1944' Cast: Unraveling the Mystery of the Dutton Family Tree
Be forewarned that there will be some spoilers for 1923's final episode in this article. Variety has confirmed that 1923 ended with two seasons, and the franchise will now skip ahead 21 years. But who will be in the cast?
As fans know, Spencer Dutton survived the showdown between the Dutton family and its rich developer enemy, played by Timothy Dalton. However, his wife, Alex, died from the results of hypothermia after giving birth to their son, John Dutton, so she won't be in 1944, which will be set in the height of World War II.
That has people trying to unravel the lingering mysteries in the Dutton family tree. It's likely, due to the voiceover at the end of 1923, that the baby John Dutton will be featured as a young adult in 1944, although the official cast list and release date have not yet been announced.
But how does this all tie into Kevin Costner's character?
Costner's character's name was John Dutton III, and he was born in April 1959, so he obviously won't feature in 1944, even as a baby. Costner's dad in the show is named John Dutton Jr., and the family name provides a clue. He was played in Yellowstone by Dabney Coleman, who died in 2024, according to People.
But is John Dutton Jr. the son of Spencer and Alex or Jack and Elizabeth?
It's not clear yet whether John Dutton, the baby in 1923, is the direct ancestor of Kevin Costner's John Dutton, despite the coincidence of the name. Remember that Elizabeth, the wife of the deceased Jack, is also pregnant at the end of 1923. So which baby ends up being the father of Costner's character? Could Elizabeth also name her son John, after her husband Jack and his father John Dutton 1? That's' unclear, according to the actress who plays Elizabeth, Michelle Randolph. But it's possible. And there are some major clues.
It's almost certain fans will see Spencer again in 1944, though, because he would be young enough, and he survived the 1923 finale.
"Is the door is still open? I don't know. And so, like, you can't confirm then, like, it could go either way. I feel like everyone has their own theory, but I can confidently say that it's not confirmed," Randolph told CinemaBlend.
Randolph also told People that Elizabeth is definitely still pregnant at the end of 1923. That got confusing because she was pregnant, suffered a miscarriage, and then became pregnant again before her husband died.
"Where that baby goes, I do not know," Randolph told People.
"Elizabeth walks away pregnant. We assume she's going back to Boston. We don't know where she's going," Randolph added to People. "I really had to kind of create my own storyline, and not get attached to it, at the same time." Will Elizabeth return to the Dutton family ranch and make an appearance in 1944? That's unclear.
We do know that Sklenar's character Spencer ends up in a relationship with an unnamed widow and has another child, although he never remarries. That's revealed in the narration in 1923. Could this widow be Elizabeth? Also unclear.
Tim McGraw's character in 1883 was the ancestor of Costner's John Dutton. According to CinemaBlend, he was the great-great grandfather of Costner's character.
That would mean he's more likely the direct descendant of Elizabeth and Jack's baby, as James would be the great-great grandfather of Costner's John, John 1 would be his great-grandfather, Jack would be his grandfather and the unnamed baby (possibly) would be his dad.
However, some sites say instead that James Dutton was the great-grandfather of Costner's character, and that, of course, is key, as that would open up the possibility that Spencer was his grandfather, not Jack.
Remember that Spencer Dutton was the uncle of Jack, so he's one generation older.

ABC Cancels Series After Only One Season
ABC has made another tough decision regarding one of their newest television shows. Unfortunately, for fans of one particular series, it's been confirmed that ABC has canceled the title after releasing one sole season on their network. It took quite some time for the scripted series to receive some kind of update regarding whether or not it would be renewed or canceled entirely. Now, however, we know that ABC decided on the latter. It's unfortunate that the series had to be canceled, and even more so that crew members are alleging that there was inappropriate behavior while working on the series. What began as a promising addition to the network's lineup has now ended not only in cancellation, but under the cloud of behind-the-scenes concerns that have started to come to light in recent weeks. '' Doctor Odyssey ' has been canceled after one season on ABC.' Variety notes that 'the cast's contracts expire on Monday with no move from ABC to put the series back on its schedule for the upcoming year.' With that said, the outlet does suggest one possible reason for the show's cancellation. The news was released just 'after three of the show's former crew members filed a lawsuit against Disney and 20th Television on May 30, alleging that the studio enabled an 'unchecked campaign of sexual harassment for months'' and the crew members also accused 'assistant prop master Tyler Patton of making 'sexual jokes, innuendos, comments, sexual gestures and images' in addition to 'unwanted touching' including 'openly grabbing a visiting female employee's buttocks.' The medical drama series, created by Ryan Murphy, starred Joshua Jackson as Max Bankman. His character is a doctor on a luxury cruise line called the Odyssey. The story revolves around Bankman as he assists with medical emergencies while overseas. The series Doctor Odyssey was produced by 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television. Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry breakup: Couple to focus on co-parenting daughter Daisy
Hollywood power couple Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom, who'd been sparking speculation about their yearslong romance in recent weeks, has broken up. Representatives for Perry and Bloom, who have been engaged for six years, confirmed their separation in a statement to USA TODAY on July 3. "Due to the abundance of recent interest and conversation surrounding Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry's relationship, representatives have confirmed that Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting," the statement read. "They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is — and always will be — raising their daughter with love, stability, and mutual respect," the statement from their representatives continued. Us Weekly was first to report. The announcement comes after previous reports and media speculation that Perry, 40, and Bloom, 48, who share 4-year-old daughter Daisy Dove, had ended their nine-year relationship. People and Us Weekly reported in June that the couple had allegedly ended their engagement. Perry and Bloom began dating in 2016, briefly split in 2017 and got engaged in February 2019. They welcomed daughter Daisy in 2020. Bloom raised eyebrows in late June when he attended Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's wedding in Italy alone. The "Lord of the Rings" alum, donning a crisp white button-down and khaki slacks, flashed a peace sign to onlookers as he left the Gritti Palace Hotel in Venice via boat. Perry had a slate of four Lifetimes Tour concerts in Adelaide, Australia, during Bezos and Sánchez's wedding weekend. After the celebrity nuptials wrapped, Bloom posted some inspirational quotes on his Instagram Story on June 30. In the first slide, Bloom re-posted a translated quote from the Buddha that read, "Each day is a new beginning. What we do today is what matters most." In a follow-up post, Bloom typed up a "daily encouragement by Daisaku Ikeda," a prominent Japanese religious figure and Buddhist: "The important thing is to take that first step. Bravely overcoming one small fear gives you the courage to take on the next." Contributing: KiMi Robinson, USA TODAY
