Giant, flightless bird is next target for de-extinction company Colossal Biosciences
Genetic engineering startup Colossal Biosciences has added the South Island giant moa — a powerful, long-necked species that stood 10 feet (3 meters) tall and may have kicked in self-defense — to a fast-expanding list of animals it wants to resurrect by genetically modifying their closest living relatives.
The company stirred widespread excitement, as well as controversy, when it announced the birth of what it described as three dire wolf pups in April. Colossal scientists said they had resurrected the canine predator last seen 10,000 years ago by using ancient DNA, cloning and gene-editing technology to alter the genetic make-up of the gray wolf, in a process the company calls de-extinction. Similar efforts to bring back the woolly mammoth, the dodo and the thylacine, better known as the Tasmanian tiger, are also underway.
To restore the moa, Colossal Biosciences announced Tuesday it would collaborate with New Zealand's Ngāi Tahu Research Centre, an institution based at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, that was founded to support the Ngāi Tahu, the main Māori tribe of the southern region of New Zealand.
The project would initially involve recovering and analyzing ancient DNA from nine moa species to understand how the giant moa (Dinornis robustus) differed from living and extinct relatives in order to decode its unique genetic makeup, according to a company statement.
'There is so much knowledge that will be unlocked and shared on the journey to bring back the iconic moa,' Ben Lamm, CEO and co-founder of Colossal Biosciences, said in the statement. For example, the company said, researching the genomes of all moa species would be 'valuable for informing conservation efforts and understanding the role of climate change and human activity in biodiversity loss.'
Colossal, which has raised at least $435 million since it was founded by Lamm and Harvard University geneticist George Church in 2021, has committed 'a large investment' to New Zealand, the company said without giving further details. Peter Jackson, the New Zealand-born 'Lord of the Rings' director, who is one of a number of high-profile investors in the company, is also involved with the project. He has one of the largest private collections of moa bones, according to the Associated Press.
Scott MacDougall-Shackleton, cofounder and director of the Advanced Facility for Avian Research at Western University in London, Ontario, said that because the moa went extinct in the past few hundred years there were extensive bones, egg shell fragments, and even feathers that could be studied. He was not involved in the research.
'The primary explanation for their extinction is overhunting and habitat change following the arrival of Polynesian peoples to the island,' he explained via email.
'Prior to this they had very few predators,' he said. 'This is a pattern for flightless birds on islands that have very little defence against hunting or predation (like dodos).'
The idea of reviving a species like this was 'intellectually interesting, but really should be a low priority,' MacDougall-Shackleton said. 'If we are concerned about island bird conservation there are hundreds of threatened and critically endangered species in New Zealand, Hawaii and other Pacific islands that need conservation resources more urgently.'
As part of the project, Colossal said it would undertake ecological restoration projects in New Zealand, focusing on rehabilitating potential moa habitats while supporting existing native species.
Many scientists argue that while Colossal's researchers are advancing the field of genetic engineering, it's not truly possible to resurrect an extinct animal — any attempt could only create a genetically modified, hybrid species. Suggesting that extinction can be reversed through technology risks undermining the urgency of conserving existing species and ecosystems, critics say.
Lamm, Colossal's CEO, told CNN's Fareed Zakaria last month that the biotechnology Colossal develops will be used to help rescue animals on the brink of extinction as well as those that have already disappeared. For example, he said, Colossal has produced two litters of cloned red wolves, the most critically endangered wolf species, using a new, less invasive approach to cloning developed during the dire wolf research.
'I think that we could have a scalable de-extinction system that isn't going to replace conservation, but it is kind of that additional backup that I think we need, especially in these dire cases,' Lamm said.
Scott Edwards, a professor of organismic and evolutionary biology and curator of ornithology at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University, said he was excited by the project although the techniques necessary to bring back the giant moa would be different to the dire wolf, because birds develop in an egg, making the process more challenging, he said.
'It's important that science reaches for the stars and, you know, I do understand the ethical concerns with bringing (these birds back) especially if there's no place for them,' Edwards, who was not involved in the project, said. 'But if it works it will impress upon humanity just how much we've lost.'

Bighorn sheep are disappearing in Texas. Wildlife biologists are stepping in.
Bighorn sheep have become a rarity in Texas, but a group of wildlife biologists are on a mission to rescue the species. About 50% of the state's bighorn sheep population was decimated in the last five years due to disease, said Froylán Hernández of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Hernández is the program leader for the department's Desert Bighorn Sheep Program. The disease spread to the bighorn sheep from other animals, which people brought to the region. Bighorn sheep are native to the western mountains and were once revered by Native Americans. Last fall, wildlife biologists planned a rescue. They captured dozens of bighorn sheep, some pregnant, from the only disease-free Texas herd left. The biologists airlifted the sheep to veterinarians to ensure they were healthy, and then moved the sheep more than 200 miles to an isolated mountain range, free of disease-carrying species. Biologists returned to the herd this month in the Franklin Mountains in West Texas to see if the sheep survived, and maybe if the herd grew. They found a line of nine sheep, including lambs that were just days old. The Texas herd is growing again, and biologists hope it won't butt heads with humans or disease. "I am extremely, extremely happy, very, very satisfied," Hernández said. "It's monumental."

Air Protein, Coreshell and Lyten are among the innovators leveraging the infrastructure and support for makers in San Leandro. Read on to discover how they're redefining what's possible. AIR PROTEIN NASA-inspired research drives sustainable food production A food production facility that once made such American breakfast innovations as Eggo Waffles and Pop-Tarts is aiming to change the way we eat once again, this time with a sustainable twist. Air Protein opened its first Air Protein Farm on San Leandro's Gate510 campus in 2023, where it does just what its name suggests: make high-quality protein out of particles in the air. Co-founders Lisa Dyson and John Reed were inspired by research from the early days of NASA, which explored ways astronauts could produce food on long space journeys. They built on that work, creating a method for growing protein in cultures, similar to the production of yogurt, cheese, and wine. The result is a neutral-tasting protein flour that can be turned into or used in any food. 'We and our investors believe we've cracked the code on making functional ingredients that have a great cost profile,' Dyson said. 'Many companies are also looking for ingredients that are resource-efficient, and that's what we do. We help CPG [Consumer Packaged Goods] companies make great products for consumers.' In choosing San Leandro, Air Protein put the company's headquarters in a location with a history of food manufacturing. Dyson said the Air Protein project team and the landlord worked closely with the City throughout the process to obtain the necessary permits for building out the facility. 'With this particular site and location, there is fermentation happening with other companies around us,' Dyson said. These include 21st Amendment Brewery and Drake's Brewing. 'That made this more appealing than some other options.' The San Leandro Air Protein Farm produces samples of its protein in large enough quantities for food product companies to use in their product development. Next up will be a larger commercial facility to support full-scale use of Air Protein in food for grocery shelves. 'That's the most exciting thing about 2025,' Dyson said. 'We're turning the science innovation that NASA started in the 1960s and 1970s, completing the mission and making it a reality.' LYTEN San Leandro lands new battery cell production facility Every once in a while, an opportunity comes along that is just too good to pass up. That's what happened to Lyten, a San Jose-based company specializing in supermaterial applications, which focuses on commercializing lithium-sulfur batteries as a high-performance, low-cost alternative to lithium-ion technology. The company was in the process of planning a gigafactory in Nevada and thinking about its next major production facility outside California when the perfect location popped up in San Leandro, said Chief Battery Technology Officer Celina Mikolajczak. A lithium-metal battery maker had closed, leaving behind a manufacturing space and equipment that was immediately of interest. Lyten snapped up the equipment and 119,000-square-foot lease at Gate510 that November. Mikolajczak expects to have a 100-megawatt-hour production line in San Leandro up and running in 2026. 'We were planning and tooling for a big factory, and then the opportunity to take over the lease in San Leandro occurred,' she said. 'We said, 'Wow, that's a big enough space. There's enough dry room capability there. There's enough power. We could get one high-volume production line running there and learn a hell of a lot and get a jump on being ready for a bigger factory.' Lyten's San Leandro site will deliver lithium-sulfur battery cells for multiple types of energy storage customers, including defense and drone applications. In doing so, the company will help U.S. manufacturers keep more of their supply chain close to home. 'With lithium-sulfur, we can develop the technology and commercialize it in the U.S. and be part of creating the next wave of manufacturing in this country,' Mikolajczak said. CORESHELL New battery anodes boost domestic supply chain Batteries have quickly become a crucial component in efforts to transition from fossil fuels to sustainable forms of energy. But the batteries most widely used in electric vehicles and other key applications today come with limitations. San Leandro-based Coreshell is one of the innovators working to change this. The company has developed a battery anode that uses 100% domestically sourced metallurgical silicon instead of graphite, allowing it to store significantly more energy without relying on a risky supply chain. 'We're replacing something that is produced only in China with silicon that is produced widely here in the United States and in Europe,' said Co-founder and CEO Jonathan Tan. 'It can be even more cost-effective.' Founded in 2017, Coreshell relocated its development work to the Gate510 campus in 2020 and opted to remain in the city when it was time to expand into the first stages of production in 2024. It moved across the street to another building on the Gate510 campus, where a team of approximately 50 people has a four megawatt-hour pilot production facility that produces its first battery cells ready for commercialization in electric vehicles. 'We're proposing a foundational change in battery chemistry by replacing graphite — one of the largest single materials in a battery — with silicon,' Tan said. 'It is imperative that we show the market how that will help people power their daily lives.' San Leandro was ideal because it offered a combination of the necessary infrastructure — including access to the heavy power Coreshell needs for manufacturing — and efficient permitting and other City support, Tan said. A San Leandro headquarters also gives Coreshell access to a strong talent pipeline from throughout the Bay Area's growing battery expertise. San Leandro Mayor Juan Gonzalez, and members of the City staff visited with Coreshell this spring. It was an opportunity for Tan and his team to share more about their work and talk about how the City can support the company's future growth. 'To have a receptive audience with the Mayor, the City Manager's office and others in San Leandro, it shows that they are invested in helping companies like Coreshell grow and be successful,' Tan said. 'We value that partnership and how they are actively working to find ways to support the success and growth of companies like ours.'

UT Arlington's plastic-infused asphalt hits Texas roads for the first time
Drivers traveling on a nearly mile-long section of SH 205 in Rockwall wouldn't notice anything unique about the asphalt, but what's underneath the surface could change the way roadways are built in the future. For the first time, the Texas Department of Transportation is testing an innovative, plastic-infused asphalt on one of its highways, thanks to a team of engineers at UT Arlington. The hope is to address two major problems at once: mounting plastic waste and failing infrastructure. "We have a road network that's deteriorating," said Dr. Sahadat Hossain, a professor of civil engineering at UTA and the director of the Solid Waste Institute for Sustainability. "So we are using plastic in building the road. We are taking one problem to solve another problem. And this is the perfect example of sustainability." TxDOT is evaluating how well the plastic-infused asphalt performs under real traffic and brutal summer temperatures, conditions students at UTA have been simulating in a lab for six years. "And for our samples itself, they're submerged in the water and they're also heated, which means that they're put to the worst possible condition that your pavement can be," said graduate student Garima Maharjan. "And then the wheels start running back and forth." Samples of normal asphalt pavement in the lab have major signs of wear-and-tear after the series of tests, while the mix infused with plastic particles have little damage. In 2023, Hossain's team used the plastic-infused pavement on two UTA parking lots, and ongoing performance evaluations show the asphalt is holding up well and is more durable than the typical asphalt. "If we add plastic in the asphalt, the road durability increases, the rotting in the road and potholes in the road goes down significantly and it becomes a longer-lasting road." Dr. Hossain said. "So we are not only helping the environment, we are not only fixing the road, we are helping reducing the cost of road maintenance for the state of Texas. And hopefully in future it will be for the entire country." The asphalt is infused with the plastic that sits in dumps and landfills or winds up in the ocean. Of the 48 million tons of plastic waste generated in the U.S. every year, the Department of Energy estimates only five to six percent gets recycled. The plastic-infused asphalt could pave the way for a new model, where our trash finds a better way to make an impact on the earth. TxDOT and the team at UTA are actively monitoring how this plastic-infused road in Rockwall performs. There are already plans to pave roads in Fort Worth and in Amarillo with the mix in the coming months, according to Dr. Hossain. He believes international projects will likely start in the next year as well, with inquiries from countries like Nigeria, Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia.
