'Logistical challenges' delay SANDF soldiers' midday arrival: Motshekga

TimesLIVE13-06-2025
Defence and military veterans minister Angie Motshekga says the midday arrival of the first group of South African National Defence Force troops who were deployed to the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been delayed due to technical and logistical challenges.
The group included 249 troops due to arrive from Tanzania. They were part of the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) Mission in the DRC.
Motshekga said the troops were expected to fly from Tanzania and their latest estimated arrival was Saturday morning.
'The indication is the arrival has been delayed due to technical and logistical challenges with the contracted airline. We have been assured they are on board and will arrive any time today [Friday] or tomorrow [Saturday].'
Sadc, which is facilitating the flights, had challenges with the contracting airline company.

Recipes for a happy life

Professional chefs, like Reuben Riffel who is on our cover, spend their entire lives guring out how to coax new flavours from familiar ingredients. Imagine cooking every single day, often in high-stress environments and with paying guests on the receiving end of your labours: either you innovate or you get bored. Never mind where his ability to cook up a storm comes from, Riffel has been astonishing South African diners for a few decades now, and he's still happy – and at peace – in the kitchen. While he's known for his food, his restaurants, his associations with spices and for having shaken up Mzansi's culinary landscape, in our interview with him he shares his perspective on finding a new outlook on life in his 50th year. Riffel doesn't get bored because he is constantly reimagining flavours, textures and recipes. He is also guring out how to do more with less, to simplify, and to share his love of food with others. It helps that he is constantly searching for ways to fill his cup, add to his knowledge base and continue growing and learning, no matter how much experience and knowledge he already has. In this issue, we not only get a measure of Riffel's calm, measured approach to life in the fast lane, but we also take a look at ways of lling your leisure time productively, including some fresh ideas about how to transform your outdoors spaces into green oases by planting up a storm (page 16). In our travel section (page 6), we set sail, not only on the seven seas, but also on that most vaunted of waterways, the Nile. We also look at a few ways cruising is evolving as some ships get larger and others turn to niche destinations for adventure seekers. We're cognisant, too, of anxieties around wealth and the value of money in uncertain times. In our reader-friendly nance section (page 10), we focus on offshore investing as an opportunity to spread those nest eggs around a bit. We also take a slightly tongue-in-cheek look at estate living (page 14), specically the outlandish promises of estate agents and their advertisers, to discover what's worth investigating before laying down a deposit. Red wine is on the rise, again, and on page 19 we look at why in this year of a major Pinotage anniversary, such compelling experiments in blending are adding depth to the local wine industry. And, finally, on page 20 we have a few tips about how to dip into the fun, but sometimes tense world of art auctions, without freaking out and dropping cash on work nobody actually wants. Happy reading – and remember to try to keep trying out new recipes and to never stop experimenting with unfamiliar ingredients.

Dikeledi Radebe gears up to climb Kilimanjaro in honour of Mandela's 107th birthday

The Imbumba Foundation, in partnership with Big Save Group, hosted a send-off event for the 2025 Trek4Mandela team. Football legend Lucas Radebe's sister Dikeledi is among the climbers. Image: Oupa Mokoena / Independent Newspapers Dikeledi Radebe is part of a group of mountain climbers and hikers planning to summit Africa's highest mountain to celebrate late former president Nelson Mandela's 107th birthday and for a good cause later this month. The sister of South African football legend and retired Bafana Bafana captain Lucas Radebe is excited to be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in this year's Trek4Mandela on behalf of the ET (Emily Tlaleng) Radebe Foundation, which was established in honour of their late mother. This year's Trek4Mandela team at their end-off hosted by Imbumba Foundation in partnership with Big Save Group in Waterkloof, Tshwane. Image: Oupa Mokoena / Independent Newspapers As the ET Radebe Foundation supports mostly sports, it decided to be involved in more initiatives. 'I got in touch with someone from Trek4Mandela and decided it is a great opportunity for us to collaborate with them and support this great initiative for young girls,' Radebe explained. She said the ET Radebe Foundation also works with school children. 'So this was a great opportunity for us to collaborate with them,' she added. She is a climber and has climbed several mountains, but it will be different because Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is at a high altitude, and she has yet to attempt. 'I have spent five days climbing the Fish River Canyon in Namibia. I have also done the toughest trail in South Africa, which is Amathole in the Eastern Cape, so I am an experienced hiker, just not an experienced high-altitude climber,' Radebe said. She said she is looking forward journey as the preparations have been good with great support from the organisers, Imbumba Foundation, which she also stated she trains the group very well. The foundation was founded by social entrepreneur Richard Mabaso in 2010 and is behind the Trek4Mandela annual expeditions to honour the global icon's birthday on July 18, as well as another to celebrate Women's Day on August 9. It supports the Caring4Girls programme, which Mabaso established in 2012, to provide access to sanitary pads and the corresponding reproductive health education. Radebe said she was also grateful to the foundation for the awesome work it did to train the group for the whole year. 'It was a good journey, it was tough, but we all made it up until today. We are looking forward to the trip next week and to summiting and coming back and speaking about our beautiful journey and stories. Good luck to all the 2025 climbers.' Dikeledi continued: 'I am a bit anxious, but it's good for me because it's building my strength and I tell myself that we will do this. We will summit and we will come back and tell our stories. I'm looking forward to it.'
