Mauricio Pochettino breaks silence on bombshell report linking him to Brentford job

Daily Mail5 hours ago

USA manager Mauricio Pochettino has broken his silence on a bombshell report linking him to the previously vacant Brentford job.
The Premier League club ultimately promoted former set-piece coach Keith Andrews to replace Thomas Frank, after the Dane left for Tottenham.
But a report from Irish outlet The42.ie claimed that Pochettino had interviewed for the job along with Steve Cooper.
On Saturday, Pochettino was asked about the report by Fox Sports, and told the outlet he was 'never contacted' by the Bees.
He added that he 'never talked' to the club, who announced the hiring of 54-year-old Andrews on Friday.
Following Spurs' sacking of Ange Postecoglou, Pochettino was also linked with a return to his old club.
However, he told reporters that such a scenario was 'not realistic', with the USA a year out from co-hosting the World Cup with Canada and Mexico.
The Fox Sports report also noted that - with Pochettino under contract with US Soccer - other teams wishing to speak with him would have to be granted permission by the federation.
Pochettino has had some difficult moments leading America since he was hired in September, as his side was knocked out of the CONCACAF Nations League by Panama and lost to Canada in the third place match.
He also oversaw a pair of concerning friendly results ahead of the Gold Cup, as the USA lost to Turkey and were trounced 4-0 by Switzlerland.
Off the field, he has clashed with the team's talisman Christian Pulisic, who declined to participate in the Gold Cup but said on CBS Sports' 'Call it What You Want' podcast that he requested to be included in the Turkey and Switzerland friendlies.
That pick-and-choose proposal was turned down by Pochettino, who later said he understood Pulisic's request but that he was the head coach and 'not a mannequin.'
Pochettino has quieted critics with three wins in the Gold Cup group stage against Haiti, Saudi Arabia and Trinidad and Tobago.
His team will face Costa Rica on Saturday in the quarterfinals.

JAKE PAUL is facing Julio Cesar Chavez Jr RIGHT NOW as the main event of the evening has arrived in California! Paul, 28, outpointed 58-year-old legendary boxer Mike Tyson for the whole of Netflix to see, and it was a decision that ended in unanimous boos around the AT&T stadium. But ultimately, it was a huge win for Paul, and he'll be hoping to extend his 11-1 professional record when he faces the son of icon, Julio Cesar Chavez. Zurdo says: "That's the fight that I want. I'm the king." 21 minutes ago By Jack Figg Ramirez vs Dorticos The judges score the bout 115-112 (x2) and 117-110... and STILL the unified WBA and WBO cruiserweight champion... Gliberto Ramirez. Laughable scorecards there, even with the point off. Zurdo did come back strong but I feel the challenger has been hard done by there. 23 minutes ago By Jack Figg Ramirez vs Dorticos – Round 12 Massive counter shot bounces off Zurdo's chin - great shot. Dorticos pushes the pace to the final bell and possibly may have done enough to take that. It will be tight on the cards, Dorticos started well, had a point off while Zurdo came back into it but the challenger may have pulled it off in the final two rounds. Let's see if the champ gets the classic favourable decision. 27 minutes ago By Jack Figg Ramirez vs Dorticos – Round 11 Dorticos is warned AGAIN for low-blows. This time gets away with it. It's back and forth action, nip and tuck with one round to go. Dorticos raced to an early lead but Zurdo has fought back and with the point off, it's all to play for. 32 minutes ago By Jack Figg Ramirez vs Dorticos – Round 10 Point deducted from Dorticos for low-blows! Now the fight is up in the air. This changes things. Dorticos ups the work rate towards the end of the round but with two to go his early lead is under threat. 37 minutes ago By Jack Figg Ramirez vs Dorticos – Round 9 Lovely exchanges on the inside with Ramirez getting the better of it. The pair go blow for blow now on the inside, Ramirez starting to land with the left hand. Ramirez slips on the canvas and the crowd get very excited - but nothing to see here. 41 minutes ago By Jack Figg Ramirez vs Dorticos – Round 8 Another left hand snaps Dorticos' head back, Ramirez starting to come on stronger now. Ramirez letting his hands go a little more now, maybe Dorticos is starting to tire. Better rounds for the champion, who maybe has come into the fight just in time. 45 minutes ago By Jack Figg Ramirez vs Dorticos – Round 7 Big left hand from Zurdo lands and the two exchange blows on the inside. Better work from Ramirez but he's been far too economical with his combinations. Good shot at the end likely wins him the round but it's been a rare sight of success. 49 minutes ago By Jack Figg Ramirez vs Dorticos – Round 6 Lovely one-two combination from Dorticos to open the round. Zurdo pushes forward but it's Dorticos who is landing the better shots. He could be on the way to a massive upset here. 52 minutes ago By Jack Figg Ramirez vs Dorticos – Round 5 Zurdo pushing the pace but not landing all that much. Dorticos is controlling the action at range and frustrating the champion. Heading into six rounds and the champion needs to get going. 56 minutes ago By Jack Figg Ramirez vs Dorticos – Round 4 Huge left hand from Zurdo on the inside, more like it from the champion. Better round for Ramirez who started to let his hands go a little. Dorticos needs to get behind that jab again. Today, 03:35 By Tom Sheen Big one up next We've got one more fight until the main event with Gilberto Ramirez defending his WBA and WBO titles against Yuriel Dorticos! This is expected to be a thriller with Zurdo at the top of his game and Cuban Dorticos a KO specialist. We can't wait for this one - and then Jake Paul and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr will be coming to the ring after that. Today, 03:27 By Jack Figg IT'S ALL OVER! Big combination from Curiel with Rodriquez on the ropes and that's all she wrote! Took a while for Curiel to get going but when he did - it was all she wrote. Rodriguez sporting a bruised face, probably the right call from the referee. Today, 03:26 By Jack Figg Curiel vs Rodriguez – Round 4 Lovely combination from Curiel, from head to body but Rodriguez covers up nice. Down goes Rodriguez after a right hook from Curiel - what a shot!

Lionel Messi aiming to make Luis Enrique eat his words at Club World Cup

Lionel Messi will come up against a former club for the first time in his storied career when Inter Miami take on Paris Saint-Germain in the last-16 at the Club World Cup Lionel Messi will face his former club Paris Saint Germain in the Club World Cup with a huge point to prove. Inter Miami superstar Messi, 38, had two years at PSG when even one of football's all-time greats could not take the French giants where they wanted to go. Incredibly, Messi scored 32 goals and assisted 35 in 75 appearances for PSG before moving onto Inter Miami. But it simply did not work as PSG had the best names - Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Co - and yet they looked like a group of individuals rather than a team. ‌ Fast forward two years and PSG boss Luis Enrique finally delivered the Holy Grail of the Champions League and proved you can win European football's biggest prize without the biggest names. ‌ The Messi experiment did not work for PSG and it ended amid some bitterness, acrimony and disappointment. It was good on the pitch for Messi but he did not really fit into a team structure. There was also public fall-out as Messi's family struggled to settle in Paris and, as a result, there is no particular love lost there. And yet he has been a phenomenal success for Inter Miami. He has been a transformational signing. Bigger than when David Beckham went to LA Galaxy and arguably the biggest in MLS history. This week, as they always do, Major League Soccer published the earnings of their players and Messi was top as he pocketed £14.5m - or £290,000-a-week - which was way ahead of anyone else. Messi has been in the US for two years. His debut was a star-studded affair where even LeBron James and Kim Kardashian queued up for selfies. ‌ His influence on and off the pitch has been huge. When he first arrived, he saw United States international Benjamin Cremaschi in training and told him: 'run less, think more.' His influence has been huge. Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets followed. The reality is that Inter Miami and the MLS believe he is worth every penny of that giant salary and the charade is now beginning over his future. Messi is in the final year of his contract, they are desperate for him to stay and it is huge for the United States generally because there is less than a year to go until the main World Cup. ‌ That is the background and story behind Messi's date with destiny against PSG and a chance to prove his worth and make his point in the last 16 tie on Monday in Atlanta. This is the sort of showdown that FIFA could only dream about when they created the Club World Cup. It was also probably a bit of a pipe dream when Inter Miami started their Club World Cup with a goalless draw against Al Ahly. Inter Miami were lucky to escape with a draw. ‌ But the fairytale began when Messi scored a winner with a glorious free kick to beat Porto. They drew against Palmeiras but threw away a 2-0 lead and yet for a MLS side to reach the knock-out stages was a huge moment for the league. That is how they view it here. And also Inter Miami are growing in confidence, belief and meanwhile they are gaining momentum. They have been the best of the three MLS teams in this tournament. Yes, PSG should win. And they are among the favourites to win the Club World Cup. They blitzed Atletico Madrid, lost to Botafogo and then got the job done against Seattle Sounders. They were the best team in Europe bar none last season. Along the way, Enrique kept referencing winning without big stars and names. That will surely fire up Messi. And when Messi is in the mood, he is still a force to be reckoned with.
