President Trump was joined by first lady Melania Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino in the stands looking down at the pitch.
Pictures show the trio standing side-by-side as the US national anthem was performed pre match.
When they were first shown on the big screen, a rapturous applause could be heard across the huge stadium.

white dress, thick Christian Dior sunglasses and a black coat which sat over her shoulders.
Infantino hosted the couple in the executive suit just weeks after he spoke with Trump in the White House about the 2026 World Cup.
The global tournament is set to take place across the United States, Mexico and Canada and will include a new expanded 48-team format.

As the game kicked off between the French champions and Champions League holders PSG and Conference League winners Chelsea, Trump and Melania took to their seats.
They were seen eagerly watching on as Trump beamed with joy as Chelsea took an early lead through two Cole Palmer goals.
Melania and Don landed in New Jersey earlier in the day on Marine One.
They touched down at Teterboro Airport before getting a motorcade to the stadium.

Ever since, presidential security ops in the US have taken a step up with Trump always closely guarded wherever he goes.
At the Club World Cup, dozens of highly trained Secret Service snipers surrounded the MetLife Stadium.
They stood in the rafters of the mammoth ground with binoculars firmly scouting the supporters as they entered the stands.
Trump has taken a liking to global sports events since he regained the presidency earlier this year.
Back in February, he became the first sitting president to attend the Super Bowl.

Updated at 21.12 REAL MADRID signed defender Alvaro Carreras from Benfica on a six-year deal, the Spanish giants said on Monday. The 22-year-old Spanish left-back, who played for Madrid's youth academy before joining Manchester United in 2020, is reported to have cost close to €50 million. He told us: 'Dan is old school so sometimes he feels, unless he is exhausted and broken down, then he hasn't worked hard enough. 'We have explained to him over the years that he doesn't have to destroy himself to have worked hard. 'Even when Dan first started on the pull-up bar, he could do 20 strict-form pull-ups. Advertisement 'I don't think people know how difficult that is, that's something the Navy Seals aim for, it's better than 99.9 per cent of the planet can dream of. 'Dan is the most flexible big man I have ever seen, he can almost do the splits. 'For a 6ft 5in, 110kgs man, that is tremendous and almost mad.'
