Horror at sea as police investigate sexual assault onboard Carnival cruise ship

Daily Mail6 days ago
Federal authorities have launched an investigation into allegations of sexual assault onboard a Carnival cruise ship just days after a man died on a separate Carnival ship.
The Carnival Breeze ship departed from Galveston, Texas, for a five-day cruise to Cozumel and Progreso on Monday afternoon.
It remains unclear when the alleged incident took place.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation told Daily Mail in a statement: ' FBI Houston is aware of allegations of sexual assault that occurred on the Carnival Breeze cruise ship which docked in Galveston on 07/28/2025.
'As is customary with crimes aboard a cruise ship, an FBI Maritime Liaison Agent, based out of the Texas City Resident Agency, is coordinating with the US Coast Guard (USCG), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the cruise line regarding this incident.
'Also keeping in line with case reviews or open investigations, the FBI will not be providing additional details or updates regarding these matters.'
Carnival Cruise Lines said in a statement to KHOU 11: 'Matters of potential criminal conduct, should they occur, are turned over to local law enforcement for their review. We will defer to the appropriate agency for further comment.'
The Daily Mail has contacted Carnival Cruise Lines for comment.
The investigation into the incident comes just days after a separate investigation was launched into the death of a holidaymaker on the Carnival Dream on July 23.
The Dream was out at sea around the Western Caribbean after leaving from Galveston, Texas, when passengers were awoken from their sleep to alarms blaring at around 3am.
One anonymous passenger told the outlet that she had heard an announcement calling for medical assistance on the Serenity Deck of the ship.
The Galveston County Medical Examiner's Office identified the deceased passenger to KHOU 11 as Euvelester Villarreal Jr., 48, of Rio Grande City, Texas.
Passengers had also told the outlet that they saw federal agents board the ship while disembarking on Saturday.
Speculation about what unfolded onboard has also started circulating online, with one woman claiming the man was attacked.
Amanda Meadows shared a video to her Facebook saying she was onboard the ship at the time, and woke up to the alarms and decided to investigate.
She said she had tried to go to an upper deck to vape but was told she couldn't by staff. Meadows claims she then mentioned going to the casino, but again staff said she couldn't go there either, and told her to return to her room.
Meadows said she returned to her room and after leaving some time later, she claims a staff member approached her and told her somebody had been attacked.
She added: 'They said someone was attacked on the ship and they lost their life because they won in the gambling place.'
A statement from Carnival on the death investigation said: 'There is no investigation about a suspicious death on Carnival Dream and it's disappointing to learn that any guests might be spreading rumors about something they know nothing about.'
After the FBI said they were probing the death, the operator said: 'It is standard practice for the FBI to review deaths that occur on cruise ships.
'This routine protocol ensures transparency. It does not automatically imply suspicious circumstances, and the facts of this matter do not suggest any such activity.
'We extend our heartfelt sympathy to our guest's family and loved ones in this difficult time.'
A spokesperson for the FBI Houston office said: 'I can confirm FBI Houston is aware of an incident that occurred around July 23, 2025 on the Carnival Dream cruise ship.
'An FBI maritime liaison agent, based out of the Texas City resident agency, is coordinating with the U.S. Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection, and the cruise line regarding this incident.

What to know about the killings of 4 Tennessee family members of an abandoned baby

A man accused of killing four family members of a baby girl that he left unharmed in a western Tennessee front yard miles from the crime scene last week was captured on Tuesday. Austin Robert Drummond, 28, was taken into custody after a search that put a community along the Mississippi River on edge and amid several unanswered questions surrounding the July 29 quadruple homicide in Tiptonville. Here's a closer look at what we know and don't know about the investigation: How did officials connect the killings with the baby? The investigation into the family's killings in Tiptonville began after an infant in a car seat was found in a front yard in the Tigrett area, roughly 40 miles (65 kilometers) away. The Dyer County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that a caller reported that a minivan or midsize SUV had dropped the baby at a 'random individual's front yard.' The sheriff's office later said they were working with investigators in neighboring Lake County, where four people had been found dead. Officials determined those people were the child's parents, grandmother and uncle. Why was the baby found so far from the crime scene? That is not clear. Detectives believe Drummond drove the baby about 40 miles from Tiptonville, where they say he fatally shot the four adults, to the town of Tigrett, where the baby girl was left in a front yard. They haven't said publicly why Drummond chose that house. Dyer and Lake counties District Attorney Danny Goodman declined in an interview with The Associated Press to elaborate on what detectives know about this aspect of the case. He said only that the baby girl is safe now and in the custody of other relatives. What was the motive? Investigators have not revealed why they think Drummond carried out the killings. Goodman said Drummond knew the four people he's charged with killing and that Drummond's girlfriend is the sister of the child's grandmother, but it's unknown if he has any connection to the baby. The victims were found fatally shot in a wooded area near Reelfoot Lake, a swamplike body of water near the Mississippi River and not far from the Missouri border. Did the suspect act alone? Police say Drummond had help in the killings, but haven't elaborated further. Tennessee authorities charged Tanaka Brown, 29, and Giovonte Thomas, 29, with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. Investigators allege both men 'assisted' Drummond, 28, in the killings. Dearrah Sanders of Jackson, Tennessee, was also charged with being an accessory after the killings. Did Drummond have a criminal background? Yes, an extensive one. According to court records, Drummond spent years in prison for robbing a convenience store as a 16-year-old and threatening to go after jurors. He was tried as an adult for the July 2013 robbery in Jackson, Tennessee. During the robbery, he pointed a pistol at the gas station store worker and ordered the cash register to be opened, taking the $44 inside, court records show. At a 2020 parole hearing, Drummond said he was on Xanax the night of the robbery and doesn't remember robbing the gas station. He said the firearm was a BB gun. After the jury convicted him of one count of aggravated robbery in August 2014, he made threats to go after jurors, Drummond said during the hearing. He pleaded guilty in February 2015 to 13 counts of retaliation for past action and was given a combined 13-year sentence. His sentence ended in September 2024, according to Tennessee Department of Correction records. As of the 2020 parole hearing, Drummond had more than two dozen disciplinary issues in prison, including possession of a deadly weapon, assault, refusing a drug test and gang activity. Drummond was charged for several activities inside the prison, including attempted murder, after he completed the sentence that originally put him behind bars, Goodman said at a news conference. Drummond was out on bond on the other charges at the time of the killings, Goodman said. What happens next? Drummond is expected in court in Tiptonville for an arraignment later this week. He faces four counts of first-degree murder, one count of aggravated kidnapping and weapons offenses, officials have said. Goodman said he's yet to decide whether to seek the death penalty, but said 'it is very likely' he'll pursue it. An attorney who represented Drummond in his case as a teenager did not return an earlier message requesting a comment. A telephone listing for Drummond could not be found, and an automated message from the local public defender's office said to call back later.

America's Most Wanted: Texas senator calls on FBI director Kash Patel to hunt down ‘fleeing' Democrats

Republican Senator John Cornyn is calling on the FBI to track down and arrest Texas Democrats who left the state to derail a vote on new congressional districts explicitly designed to elect more Republicans to Congress. In a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel on Tuesday, Cornyn requested the agency's help to 'locate the out-of-state Texas legislators who are potentially acting in violation of the law.' 'The FBI has tools to aid state law enforcement when parties cross state lines, including to avoid testifying or fleeing a scene of a crime,' he added. Democrats did not break the law by denying the Texas House of Representatives a quorum. Texas House rules allow lawmakers to issue civil arrest warrants to force members back to the capitol, but leaving the chambers is not a criminal offense, and federal law enforcement does not have authority to compel lawmakers to come back to Texas. But Cornyn, echoing claims from Texas Republicans, has accused Texas Democrats of 'potential criminal acts' — including bribery or 'other public corruption offenses' — for allegedly receiving monetary support to leave the state until the end of a 30-day legislative session. The senator's allegations have escalated law enforcement threats against Texas lawmakers who are protesting a GOP plan, requested by Donald Trump, to redraw political boundaries in the hopes of electing five more Texas Republicans into the House of Representatives in next year's midterm elections. Trump on Tuesday claimed he is 'entitled' to those seats. The office of Governor Greg Abbott, who launched the legislative session to explicitly approve the new congressional maps before 2026 midterm elections, said he supports Cornyn's move. The governor has said that the use of campaign funds to help pay for hefty fines for 'truancy' amounts to bribery. On Monday, he called on the Texas Rangers to investigate his allegations as well as 'potential legal violations connected to their refusal to appear for a quorum, conduct business, and cast votes.' Abbot 'fully supports using all necessary tools to discover potential legal violations connected to their refusal to appear for a quorum, conduct business, and cast votes,' his office said in a statement. Texas Republicans failed to reach a quorum a second day in a row on Tuesday while more than 50 Texas Democrats remain in Illinois, New York and elsewhere. 'This is not a decision we make lightly, but it is one we make with absolute moral clarity,' Democratic state Rep. Gene Wu said from Illinois on Sunday night after leaving the state with several other Democrats. On Monday, state Republicans voted in favor of their arrest. Republican House Speaker Dustin Burrows said he would immediately sign civil warrants for those missing Democratic members, giving the greenlight to the chamber's sergeant-at-arms and state troopers to make arrests and bring them to the state Capitol. The warrants only apply within state lines, making the legislative threats a largely symbolic maneuver. The House met for roughly five minutes on Tuesday before adjourning. 'It is evident to the chair that [the Department of Public Safety] will need some time to work, and we will try again to make quorum on Friday,' Burrows said. Burrows met with state law enforcement officials on Tuesday morning to discuss how to enforce the warrants. 'The Texas Constitution requires members of the Legislature to show up, and Texans expect us to do our jobs,' Burrows wrote on X. 'I remain fully committed to obtaining a quorum and resuming the business of the Texas House.' Following Monday's vote, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said he is 'prepared to do everything in my power to hold them accountable because these liberal lawmakers are not above the law.' 'It's imperative that they be swiftly arrested, punished, and face the full force of the law for turning their backs on the people of Texas,' he said. Texas Democrats had similarly left the state in 2021 to protest Republican-backed voting restrictions. After nearly five weeks on the road, enough lawmakers returned home to establish a quorum, and the measure passed. Republican lawmakers had similarly tried to force back missing Democrats at the time, though they obtained a court-ordered injunction blocking their arrest. The state's Supreme Court later struck down the injunction, finding that while the state Constitution 'enables 'quorum-breaking' by a minority faction of the legislature, it likewise authorizes 'quorum-forcing' by the remaining members.'
