Government executive loses RM385k EPF savings to online scam in Kuching
The victim received a call from a fraudster posing as a police officer from the Penang Police Contingent Headquarters.
Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the scammer accused the victim of involvement in money laundering activities and claimed he was wanted by authorities.
'The suspect instructed the victim to withdraw his EPF savings and hand it over for investigation purposes,' he said in a statement.
The victim only realised he had been deceived after being pressured for additional payments.
Police are investigating the case under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. – Bernama

Retired driving instructor charged with sexual assault
A former driving school instructor was accused of allegely committeing physical sexual offences againts a teenage girl at a driving school at Kampung Paloh here. IPOH: A former driving school instructor has been charged at the Sessions Court here for alleged sexual assault against a teenage girl last month. Lim Chin Leong, 60, pleaded not guilty to the charge under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act before judge Jean Sharmila Jesudason on Friday (Aug 1). He was alleged to have touched the 17-year-old victim's hand and thigh at a driving school in Kampung Paloh on July 7 at 10am. If convicted, he could face imprisonment for up to 20 years and be subjected to whipping. He could also be put under police surveillance for up to three years at the end of his sentence. Deputy Public Prosecutor Qurratu'aini Khalifah proposed to the court to set bail at RM20,000 and for the accused to report to the nearest police station once a month and to stay away from the victim. Lawyer R. Rajasegaran, who represented the accused, pleaded for a lower bail as the accused is no longer working and is being taken care of by his accountant daughter, who earns about RM3,000 monthly. Jean Sharmila ordered the bail to be set at RM8,000 and for the accused to report to the nearest police station once a month and to stay away from the victim. She set Sept 12 for mention.

Man remanded for alleged murder of six-year-old son
JEMPOL: Police have obtained an order to remand a 36-year-old man for seven days from the magistrate's court in Bahau to assist in investigations into the alleged murder of his six-year-old son. Jempol police chief Supt Norhisham Mustapar said magistrate Norshazwani Ishak signed the order to allow the suspect to be detained until Aug 7. He is being probed under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. The suspect was earlier brought to court around 8.55am and taken away about an hour later. He was brought here after his remand in Johor Baru to assist in investigations under the Child Act 2001 ended on Thursday (July 31). It was earlier reported that the suspect had lodged a report on his son's disappearance on July 24, claiming that his son went missing near a coffee shop in Taman Bukit Indah. Police later identified the victim as M. Tishant. However, the father was subsequently arrested to assist in investigations. Four days later, police found the boy's remains buried in a secluded spot along a railway line in Rompin, Jempol. Police also recovered a hoe believed to have been used to bury the body. An autopsy conducted on the victim later revealed that he was strangled to death with cable ties. The medical team estimated that the victim died between 9am and 11am on July 23. Eight who allegedly killed snatch thief released on bail
KUALA LUMPUR: Eight men arrested for allegedly beating a snatch thief to death in Cheras have been released on bail after investigation papers were sent to the Deputy Public Prosecutor's office. Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Yusof said all eight individuals aged from 22 to 72, were released pending the full post-mortem report and further analysis by the Chemistry Department to determine the exact cause of death. "All the individuals arrested remain under remand until tomorrow (Aug 2). The investigation has been completed and referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor's on July 31. The DPP subsequently instructed that all detainees be temporarily released on police bail," he said in a statement on Friday (Aug 1). ACP Naazron added that in the incident on July 22, police received an emergency call at 11.10am about a snatch theft attempt involving a 36-year-old woman. The suspect was successfully apprehended by the public but was assaulted in the process. He was later pronounced dead at the scene. He said a post-mortem was carried out on the same day and authorities are still awaiting the full report. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
