Volvo India's gear shift: Changes EV-only plan; ICE models to stay amid slow uptake

Volvo Cars India has revised its earlier strategy of transitioning to an all-electric portfolio, opting instead to continue selling both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in the country.

currently account for around 25% of Volvo's sales in India. However, the market for premium battery electric vehicles (BEVs) remains small, although the company notes signs of recovery in the last six months following a slump a year ago. The decision comes after companies' previous claims to phase out ICE models entirely.
Volvo Cars India, managing director Jyoti Malhotra, speaking to Economic Times, said 'The adoption rate (of electric vehicles) is different in different countries.
And even within the country (in India), it's different across states.'
'We will continue to drive in electric cars and have a launch lined up later this year itself. But at the same time, we will continue to focus on ICE,' he added.
Volvo had announced plans to go fully electric by 2030 globally, but the timelines have now been extended. 'About a year back, EVs had started losing steam. We are seeing some uptick in the segment in the last six months.
But customer needs are different across regions,' said Malhotra.
He pointed out that state policies and infrastructure play a pivotal role in EV adoption. States like Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi have favourable tax regimes and more low-rise housing, are seeing better uptake, compared to cities dominated by high-rises, where home charging is a challenge.
India currently levies a Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 5% on EVs, while hybrids attract a much steeper 43%.

Volvo offers plug-in hybrids in international markets, but Malhotra clarified that Indian launches would depend on more favourable tax regime.
The company is preparing to introduce a new electric model later this year but will simultaneously retain focus on ICE vehicles to cater to diverse market needs.
Volvo's shift aligns with similar moves by global peers such as Jaguar Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz, who are reassessing their timelines for a fully electric portfolio amid similar market realities.
Industry data shows that around 22,900 luxury vehicles were sold in the first half of 2025, marking a modest 1.8% increase year-on-year.
He also welcomed India's ongoing negotiations around Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), noting their potential to boost the auto sector. 'The UK FTA has set a benchmark. While the one with the EU is still some time away, free trade agreements are good for the economy,' he said.

‘Sugar prodn dips 23% in 7 yrs despite rise in cane acreage'

Lucknow: UP's sugarcane sector has witnessed an intriguing trend with sugar production by mills falling by almost 23% between 2017-18 and 2024-25, despite a substantial increase in cane acreage and productivity during the period. Industry sources attribute the dip to diversion of cane for Khandsari, low recovery and adverse weather conditions. Data released by the cane development department shows that the area under cane cultivation increased by almost 28% — from 22.99 lakh hectares in 2017-18 to 29.51 lakh hectares in 2024-25. Likewise, the productivity also increased from 79.19 tonnes per hectare to 83 tonnes per hectare, signifying a rise of around 5%. Even cane production went up from 1820.75 lakh tonnes (LT) to 2456.35 LT during the same period. The number of mills crushing cane also rose from 119 to 122, one of the highest in recent times. However, the sugar production dropped from 120.5 lakh tonnes in 2017-18 to 92.45 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, a fall of around 23%. In 2023-24, sugar production in the state was pegged at around 104.13 lakh tonnes. The cane crushing season in UP ended in June earlier this year. Yet, UP happens to be the biggest producer of sugar in the country, surpassing Maharashtra. The western state was the leading producer of sugar last year when it produced around 110 lakh metric tonnes of sugar. This, however, plunged below 90 LMT in 2024-25. Nationally, the total sugar production is estimated to be around 330 lakh tonnes. The fall in sugar production is largely attributed to the diversion of sugar from cane mills to Khandsari, a traditional, unrefined Indian sugar made from sugarcane juice. It's a natural sweetener that retains more nutrients and molasses than refined white sugar. According to an estimate, UP has around 250 Khandsari units, essentially established in parts of west and central UP. Industry sources said that cane growers diverted their produce to Khandsari units for quicker compensation compared to the one paid by the mills. The shift gained pertinence against the backdrop of the state govt keeping the State Advisor Price (SAP) for sugar at Rs 370 per quintal (for early variety) and Rs 360 per quintal for general variety. Another key reason behind the downturn in sugar production is adverse weather conditions — drought and excess rainfall — besides a drop in the quality of cane. Sources said that the cane recovery reduced from around 10.5% in 2017-18 to a little over 9.5% in current times.

iPhone 17 Pro Max leak: Papaya orange color sparks huge debate among Apple fans

What's behind the papaya orange leak? Live Events What is it about this color that is causing such a fuss? What else is known about the iPhone 17s? Will the papaya orange make the cut? FAQs (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel Apple's iPhone 17 Pro Max isn't even official yet, but one rumored detail has already turned the internet upside down. A new leak suggests Apple may be introducing a striking papaya-orange colour and reactions are as intense as the color itself.A new leak says that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will come in a bright "papaya orange" color, which has Apple fans arguing. Some people like the big change, but others think it's a design flaw. There will be four models in the iPhone 17 series, and the camera layout will be different. It is expected to come out in September, as per a report by Vietnamnet image that was leaked by reliable tipster Sonny Dickson is the source of the color that is lighting up tech blogs and comment sections. The picture, which is said to show lens protectors for the iPhone 17 lineup, showed a bright orange color called "papaya."AppleInsider then released concept renders that showed the iPhone 17 Pro Max will come in five colors, including the bright orange and more common colors like graphite gray, silver, deep blue, and not everyone agrees on what the color really is. Some people say that it might be more like copper or bronze than bright neon orange, which makes the initial leak seem less has always had a clean, simple look, especially on its Pro models. That's why the rumored orange has gotten a lot of attention, from people who are excited to people who don't want it at all, as per a report by Vietnamnet person on social media said it was "the worst phone color I've ever seen," while others defended it, calling it "fire" and "a breath of fresh air." A well-known Apple leaker named Majin Bu even posted a glowing mockup with the words "This looks incredible."Macworld also found an internal Apple reference to the Pantone color "TCX Papaya," which is a very bright orange color. If this is true, it would be one of the biggest changes to the look of Apple's high-end phones in years, as per a report by Vietnamnet iPhone 17 series is going to be a big design update, even with the color issue. There are four models expected: the regular iPhone 17, the super-thin iPhone 17 Air (also called the iPhone 17 Slim), and the high-end iPhone 17 Pro and Pro are rumors that the iPhone 17 Air will be Apple's thinnest and lightest phone yet. This is probably because of Samsung's Galaxy Edge series. The standard iPhone 17 will have two vertical cameras, but the other three models will have a horizontal rectangular camera layout like the ones on Google's Pixel four models are expected to have aluminum frames, glass backs, better camera systems, and the next-generation A19 chip, which is made for more advanced AI has not said anything about the leaks, as is usual. Fans will have to wait until the company's keynote in September to find out which colors will actually be available. If papaya orange (or something like it) makes the final cut, it could mean that Apple's Pro line will be bolder and more expressive in the future, as per a report by Vietnamnet people think that's smart, while others think it's a mistake. But one thing is for sure: Apple's next announcement is going to be a lot more a leak that hasn't been confirmed, but trusted insiders say the "papaya" color could be is expected to unveil its iPhone 17 lineup in early September.
