ED questions cricketers, film stars for ads promoting illegal online betting apps
NEW DELHI: Expanding its investigation into the illegal online betting apps case, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has questioned and recorded statements of cricketers and celebrities including Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina and Urvashi Rautela, sources said on Wednesday.
They said that the cricketers and celebrities were questioned as part of the ED's ongoing investigation into promotion of banned online betting app platforms like 1xBet.
The platforms, they said, were using 'surrogate names', such as 1xbat, in ad campaigns that include web links (for online material) and QR codes to redirect users to the original (and illegal) betting platform in blatant violation of current laws.
Incidentally, it was The New Indian Express, which first broke this on September 12, 2022 with a story titled 'Ex-cricket World Cup stars endorse product linked to online betting company with dubious links'.
The ED had earlier said these platforms presented themselves as hosting skill-based games but used rigged algorithms that classify them as 'gambling operations' under existing Indian laws.
A preliminary inquiry by the ED suggested that multiple laws may have been violated, including the Information Technology (IT) Act, the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), and the stringent Prevention of Money Laundering Act PMLA), as well as government notifications, the sources said.
A source in the ED said, "The online betting App platforms have gained massive visibility by partnering with celebrities and influencers—even in defiance of explicit government bans."
There has been no official statements from the celebrities and sportsmen.
In March this year, an FIR was reportedly lodged in Hyderabad against 25 celebrities for promoting illegal betting platforms.
The list includes actors and public figures such as Nidhi Agarwal, Vijay Deverakonda, Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj, Manchu Lakshmi, and Praneetha.
Experts are of the view that the illegal betting app business in India is worth over $100 billion and growing at 30 percent annually, despite the efforts of authorities to crack down on all such platforms.
There are also an estimated 11 crore Indians, who use these apps daily, and financial frauds by the promoters have been linked to over 1,000 suicides, including by school students.

A Hindu girl and a man from Pakistan were found dead around 10 to 12 kilometres from the International Border on the Indian side in Sadhewala sector in Rajasthan's to sources, the two are believed to have died from starvation and dehydration about four to five days ago, amid the extreme heat and harsh desert conditions. Dalit students denied haircut; police book salon owner
The Kalaburagi district police have registered a case against a salon owner who allegedly refused to give a haircut to Dalit students in Kinni Sultan village at Aland taluk in Kalaburagi district. On Friday when some students belonging to Dalit community went to a salon for a haircut, the hairdresser allegedly denied them the service, stating that they are continuing the practices passed on to them by their ancestors. But the reports of barbers refusing service to Dalits had surfaced recently. The caste-based discrimination still persists in Kinni Sultan village. Although there are three salon shops in the village, Dalits there are forced to travel all the way to Aland town-which is 14 km away or to the Tadakal village- which is about 5 km, for a haircut. The barbers in the village agreed to serve Dalit customers only after police personnel threatened stern action against untouchability. Based on a complaint lodged by a villager belonging to Dalit community, a case has been registered against the owner of salon shop Premnath Shinde under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Aland taluk Assistant Director of Social Welfare Department Vijaylakshmi Holkar visited the village to gather first-hand information of the incident.

Snakes on a plane bound for India, again
Customs officers in Mumbai said they have stopped a plane passenger arriving from Thailand with a wriggling cargo of live snakes, the third such seizure this month. "Customs officers... foiled yet another wildlife smuggling attempt, 16 live snakes... seized from passenger returning from Thailand," said customs officers in the airport in the Indian financial hub. The passenger, who arrived on Sunday, has been arrested, the customs agency said in a statement, with "further investigation underway". The live snakes included reptiles often sold in the pet trade, and were largely non-venomous, or with venom too weak to affect people. They included garter snakes, a rhino rat snake and a Kenyan sand boa, among others. In early June, customs officers stopped a passenger smuggling dozens of venomous vipers, also arriving from Thailand. Days later, officers stopped another traveller carrying 100 creatures including lizards, sunbirds and tree-climbing possums. Wildlife trade monitor TRAFFIC, which battles the smuggling of wild animals and plants, has warned of a "very troubling" trend in trafficking driven by the exotic pet trade. More than 7,000 animals, dead and alive, have been seized along the Thailand-India air route in the last 3.5 years, it said.
