Caruso, Wiggins, Thunder bench sparks run that tied NBA Finals at 1-1

NBC Sports09-06-2025
OKLAHOMA CITY — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander put on a masterclass Sunday in Game 2 of the Finals. At the same time, the league-best Thunder defense lived up to its reputation, making life difficult for Tyrese Haliburton.
However, the Thunder won Game 2 because of their bench.
That Oklahoma City bench scored 48 points on the night, and it was the bench that fueled the 19-2 second quarter run, which ultimately decided the game.

'I think we just kind of found a rhythm on both ends of the court,' Aarom Wiggins said of the second-quarter run that broke the game open. 'We were able to get stops, get out in transition, hit a couple shots. Once we kind of got going, you could kind of just feel the energy playing a factor in that.'
Praise for Caruso, Wiggins
The Thunder bench was led by Alex Caruso's 20 points and Wiggins' 18. However, it wasn't all about the points, Kenrich Williams had zero of those but had a fantastic hustle shift in the first half that helped in the big run, and he was +15 on the night in just eight minutes of action.
'They were huge tonight. [Wiggins] was huge tonight,' Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. 'I give him a lot of credit because he was a huge part of our success this season, and in the playoffs, his role has been varied night to night. But he hangs in there. He was huge in the Game 4 win at Denver, in that series. He was massive tonight...
'Great professionalism, great readiness and a huge performance for us in that situation.'
Wiggins' ability to stay ready through these playoffs, despite his wildly inconsistent minutes, has impressed his teammates.
'It's the hardest job in the league, I feel like. I think he's underrated...' Jalen Williams said of Wiggins. 'That goes underrated. It's really hard to stay engaged and stay ready. For him to be able to do that on the biggest stage he's ever played on and have a really good game, very special player.'
'It's impressive to me. He's been exactly who he's been all year throughout the Playoffs,' Gilgeous-Alexander said of Wiggins. 'Like, sometimes it's 20 minutes, sometimes two minutes, sometimes he gets 10. It's all over the place. No matter what, he finds a way to impact winning for us.
'You need it in the biggest moments. No one-man show can win an NBA championship. For him to rise to the occasion and just be who he's been in the biggest moment of his basketball career is pretty gutsy. Says a lot about the competitor and the man he is.'
From his perspective, Wiggins has seen it all, which has him ready for these moments.
'I think I've been in every different position, whether that's having the ball in my hands, being a second, third, fourth option, even coming off the bench,' Wiggins said. 'Regardless of what's asked from me, I think I've just kind of had experiences.'
As for Caruso, Chet Holmgren called him 'our GOAT.'
'He's one of those guys who you know is going to bring it every single night, whether he's [age] 22 or 30, doesn't matter, he's going to bring it,' Holmgren said of Caruso, having a little fun with him being one of the older players on the team. 'I feel like as a collective we really feed off of that. Then also his ability to kind of process things that are happening out there and relay it and communicate it to everybody else is really important for us.'
'He has a lot of experience and he is really smart,' Lu Dort said of Caruso. 'Sometimes I feel like he is seeing the game a little differently. He's an unbelievable defender, me as well, so every time we talk about defensive stuff I am picking his brain.'
While Wiggins has seen fluctuating minutes during the playoffs, Caruso saw Daigneault limit his minutes all season long, with the goal of having him fresh for moments like this.
'It was difficult just because I am such a competitive guy,' Caruso said of his limited minutes this season. 'If I'm only playing 15 to 20 minutes, if it's one of those nights where it's 15, we're not playing great, like my instinct is to, all right, coach, leave me in there, let me fix it, let me be the one to help us get out of it...
'At the same time, we won 68 games in the regular season. We had a 12-, 13-man rotation through the year depending on who was hurt, different teams we played. That just comes with the nature of having a really good, deep team.'
That depth is why Oklahoma City is back in the series, now tied 1-1 and heading back to Indiana for Game 3.

When will OKC Thunder receive championship ring? 2025-26 Opening Night revealed

Over a month since they won the NBA championship, the Oklahoma City Thunder still have one group celebration left to commemorate their playoff run to the Larry O'Brien trophy — receiving their rings. As the NBA heads on vacation over the next two months with its driest part of the calendar, the Thunder have a pretty good idea of when they'll receive their championship ring. The NBA published its key dates for the 2025-26 regular season. The Opening Night will be on Tuesday, Oct. 21. If tradition keeps up — which you have every reason to believe it will — the Thunder will play their home opener on that date. Likely in the debut game for the NBC broadcast, as broadcast rights return to the network. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren will headline the Thunder next season once again. All three signed long-term deals this past offseason to keep them in OKC for the foreseeable future. Besides some changes on the bottom of the depth chart, the NBA champion will run it back with basically the same roster in hopes of being a rare repeat winner. The opponent is unknown. The NBA will release its 2025-26 regular season schedule sometime in August. But you can circle Oct. 21 for when the Thunder will unveil their championship banner and the roster will receive their ring in a pregame ceremony.

OKC Thunder mailbag: Should Chet Holmgren's playing time be monitored?

The calendar nears August, which means the NBA is in its driest part of the year. Rosters are mostly set as front offices head into vacations for the next couple of months before training camps start. The Oklahoma City Thunder will enter the 2025-26 season with the hopes of being repeat NBA champions. They had one of the greatest seasons ever with a 68-14 regular-season record and captured the Larry O'Brien trophy. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren were all signed to new contract extensions this offseason. As the Thunder basically run it back with the same roster, Thunder Wire will conduct regular mailbags to answer questions that fans have. One question being asked is about Holmgren's workload. After another injury-riddled year that saw a hip fracture limit him to 32 regular-season games, should the Thunder approach his 2025-26 season more cognizant of his minutes? That would be a tough argument to pitch to a 23-year-old who's already missed over half his time in three seasons. Since they graduated into being a contender two seasons ago, the Thunder have never been the type of organization to limit their star players' minutes. The only real example was how Alex Caruso was managed last year. And even then, he's just a 31-year-old role player who was better suited to play his brand of high-intensity basketball in the playoffs. The Thunder are the second-youngest NBA champions. They shouldn't stress over Holmgren's minutes in the regular season. Besides, he's only averaged 28.9 minutes per game in his career. That's a good range to have for the seven-footer. Expect a similar number next season. While Holmgren has missed significant time, neither of his big-time injuries should create chronic pain that needs to be monitored. The deeper the Thunder went into the playoffs, the better he looked. With an offseason under his belt, any rust concerns from his Nov. 2024 hip fracture should be removed. I say let's play the season out. Holmgren should be treated like any other 23-year-old. Obviously, if he has any lingering injuries, you must keep an eye on them and see if sitting out the occasional game will be worth it. That's a luxury afforded to OKC's entire roster, considering how deep it is. But there's zero reason to map out a plan to have him keep his regular-season workload limited with an arbitrary number.

Lu Dort vouches for Montreal to have an NBA expansion team

As the calendar nears August, the NBA has hit its driest part of the year. The offseason is mostly settled. Teams head to vacation for the last two months before they get back on the grind for the 2025-26 season. After winning the NBA championship, the Oklahoma City Thunder will enter next season as the favorite to repeat. But before they can do that, players are scattered throughout the globe. It's that time of the year when everybody heads back home and relaxes a little. For Lu Dort, that means going back to Montreal, Québec, Canada. He played a key role in the Thunder's championship run. He was tasked to defend the opposition's best scorers. He also stepped up on the other end as he shot 34.3% from 3 on 6.1 attempts in the playoffs. When you win the Larry O'Brien trophy, you get the entire summer to flex your bragging rights. In Dort's case, that means showing how he could be the perfect 3-and-D starter on an NBA champion. After going undrafted in 2019, he's had one of OKC's better developmental success stories into one of the top defenders. Now that Dort is back home in Montreal, he's had a chance to reflect on the Thunder's championship journey. He also pushed the agenda that his home city is good enough to have its own NBA franchise. The 26-year-old has never been shy about his roots. As NBA Commissioner Adam Silver poured cold water over expansion talks at the Summer League, Dort recently campaigned that Montreal is capable of having an NBA franchise. You always hear about Seattle and Las Vegas. Rarely about Montreal. The Toronto Raptors are Canada's sole NBA team. "I would say the talent and the audience definitely. I think there's a lot of people in Montreal that loves basketball. Talent, we have so many kids from Montreal that plays in high school now. That plays in college. A lot of them in the NBA as well," Dort said. "I really think it's possible. I'll see if it happens one day. I'll see if I'll be involved in that one day. It's to see but I feel like it could definitely feel like it could happen one day." Of course, Montreal has hosted NBA games before. They hosted the Thunder and Dort in a 2023-24 preseason game against the Detroit Pistons. There was an appetite for NBA basketball back then that's only grown over time. Dort has done his part to make that known. "I'm telling them like, 'Guys, Montreal is a nice city and I'm pretty sure the NBA would love to have a team there,'" Dort said. "Sometimes, whenever I get the chance to speak on it, I'll do it." Considering Silver slowed down the talks of an NBA expansion, it'll be a while before Montreal can place its bid. That said, he didn't rule it out. It's been the talk around the league for a decade. While everybody else around the sport is ready to add a couple of more teams, the NBA itself might not be.
