First Nations group launches bid to protect Victoria Park from Olympic stadium development
An application to prevent the development of a 63,000-seat Olympic stadium at Brisbane's Victoria Park has been lodged with the federal government. The Yagara Magandjin Aboriginal Corporation (YMAC), which lodged the application, considers it "one of the city's most important First Nations sites". The Queensland government's decision to proceed with plans to construct the stadium for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games has been met with some criticism. YMAC spokesperson and Yagarabul elder Gaja Kerry Charlton said the group was "resolute" to protect the site. "[Victoria Park] Barrambin is living Country … we know this place is of great significance and history … it was a complete shock when the premier came out with his stadium plans," she said. The application — made under Section 10 of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act (ATSIHP) — allows the Commonwealth to declare long-term protection of a significant Aboriginal area. ATSIHP predates the Mabo decision and the Native Title Act and does not grant property rights. Rather than be presided over by the court, a decision to approve or reject the request lies with the federal environment minister. If the minister is satisfied that a specific area is of significance and under threat, they may issue a legally binding order to protect it. In this case, the application will be decided on by Environment Minister Murray Watt. In a statement, a spokesperson from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water said the application was received on Tuesday morning. "The department is currently reviewing this application and will take all standard steps to progress it, including engaging with the applicant, the proponent and the Queensland government," they said. The 60-hectare park is managed by Brisbane City Council, but legislation passed by the Queensland government last month to exempt venues for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games from planning laws will see the site converted to a 63,000-seat stadium. In a statement, a state government spokesperson said the new laws underpin the delivery of Games infrastructure. 'The new laws provide a bespoke process that recognises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage matters, incorporating engagement and consultation with relevant parties and preparation of a cultural heritage management plan," they said. Yagara elder Uncle Steven, who consulted on the application to the federal government, said there were "not many places left around south-east Queensland that still contain that significance in cultural heritage". "If that [stadium] goes ahead, we lose part of our history," he said. "It's not only First Nations history, it's Australia's history, Brisbane's history."

Tom Doedee in contention to make long-awaited maiden top-flight appearance for Brisbane
Lions co-captain Harris Andrews has hailed the 'resilience' of former Adelaide defender Tom Doedee, who is close to his first AFL appearance for Brisbane since joining the club almost two years ago. Doedee signed a four-year deal with the Lions in October 2023, and there were high hopes he would become a key member of Brisbane's backline despite him still recovering from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee at the time. However, just days before what was expected to be his first top-flight appearance for Brisbane in March last year, Doedee suffered a partial ACL tear in the same knee during a training session. Sidelined for another season, the Geelong product returned to action with Brisbane's VFL team in April this year. It was the first of 12 appearances for the club's reserves team this year, with the Lions taking a cautious approach with his comeback. However, on the back of improving form and four successive VFL games, Doedee is in contention for AFL selection this weekend, with the Lions needing to find a replacement for concussion victim Ryan Lester for their Gabba clash with the Sydney Swans on Saturday. 'He's been playing really well,' Andrews said of the 28-year-old ex-Crows star. 'I watched a little bit of the game from the VFL on the weekend, and he looked to be in good form, so potentially (there's) an opportunity (for him). 'He's been so unfortunate with some of the setbacks that he's had to deal with, but I truly admire the resilience, the grit, the ability to just get on with life. 'He's someone that regardless of the fact that his body has let him down at times, the way he turns up at the club each and every day with a real energy and a real vibe is great. 'I've really enjoyed his time at the footy club. It'd be great to get him out there on the field with us and playing, but I'm sure that will come at some stage. 'There are a lot of guys in the VFL who have been putting their hand up, giving it their best shot. We play the same way, AFL and VFL, so whoever comes in will be ready to go.' Andrews said it was now the Lions' job to retain the same 'edge' they showed against the Magpies against a Swans outfit out of finals contention. 'When we've had a poor performance, or had a really tough month coming into a big game, we've been able to get the job done, and we need to make sure as players that we hold up our end of the bargain (against Sydney) and put ourselves on edge,' he said. 'We're aware that the Swans are going to want to come up and try to have a good game against us, but we're really excited. 'If we just focus on what we can control, and that's our effort and our intent, results will look after themselves … but it's important that we come on edge.'

'Confidence' is the buzz word for apprentice Cobi Vitler who is making every post a winner
Speaking to trainers in the know in southeast Queensland, 'confidence' is the buzz word when it comes to appraising rising apprentice Cobi Vitler. The 25-year-old Englishman is impressing the right people in the region and he's being rewarded with more rides in the city. Of course his 3kg claim helps, but Vitler is showing enough promise to suggest he will still be well in the mix for the better rides when his apprenticeship ends. Deagon trainer Jack Bruce heaped praise on Vitler after he patiently steered eight-year-old Galifianakis to victory in a Benchmark 78 (1600m) at Eagle Farm last Saturday. And in an extraordinary sidenote, Vitler became the ninth different jockey to win on Galifianakis from nine victories since the gelding broke his maiden status in February 2023 at the Gold Coast, with Corey Bayliss onboard. 'He's riding really well, he's got confidence and he's being utilised by different trainers,' Bruce said about Vitler, who has been working in Australia for seven years under astute trainers such as Brett Cavanough in Scone and Lindsay Hatch in Toowoomba. 'I thought he rode Galifianakis confidently and patiently. He did a really good job. 'While he's got that good claim, it's particularly helpful. He first came on to my radar when he became an apprentice to Lindsay Hatch and started riding up here.' Vitler rode two winners on a Saturday meeting at Eagle Farm last month - Lead Me On for Chris Anderson and mare Wanda Rox for his mentor Hatch. 'He had to throw instructions out the gate when she was slow to go and he rode her good, I was very happy with him,' Hatch said about Vitler's effort on Wanda Rox. And then the critical word that all athletes need for success is mentioned again. 'He's riding with confidence and that helps,' Hatch added. 'When you ride winners, you ride with confidence. He's a good kid.' Vitler has six rides, all with different trainers, at a mid-week meeting at Doomben on Wednesday as demand for his services climbs. 'Like any apprentice, when they have a claim that makes them particularly valuable and often at that stage of their career when they're riding well and with confidence, they're certainly worth utilising,' Bruce said. 'For example Galifianakis at 63kg, I basically ran a Benchmark 85 horse in a 78 race and met at fairly level weights so that's the appeal of utilising his services. 'Obviously you take the risk that they'll make mistakes because they're learner drivers but if they don't (make errors) then you can run the horse six rungs below what it could've been racing.' Emily Lang is the undisputed queen of the Queensland apprentices but youngsters such as Cody Collis and 183cm-tall Corey Sutherland are making their marks, while Tasmania's Chloe Wells has joined Rob Heathcote's stable on a three-month loan. 'Like Emily Lang said this week, it's once you stop claiming that it gets hard but while you can claim you're very fashionable,' Bruce said. 'It's your opportunity to get out there and ride winners and learn what works and what doesn't. 'Cobi's got to use that opportunity to be valuable when he claims 2kg, then 1.5kg and eventually enough when he has to meet Ryan Maloney at level weights.'
