Warren Buffett announces USD 6 billion in donations to five foundations

Minta day ago

New York, Jun 28 (AP) Famed investor Warren Buffett is donating USD 6 billion worth of his company's stock to five foundations, bringing the total he has given to them since 2006 to roughly $60 billion, based on their value when received.
Buffett said the shares of Berkshire Hathaway will be delivered on Monday.
Berkshire Hathaway owns Geico, Dairy Queen and a range of other businesses, and Buffett is donating nearly 12.4 million of the Class B shares of its stock.
Those shares have a lower and easier-to-digest price tag than the company's original Class A shares, and each of the B shares was worth USD 485.68 at their most recent close on Friday.
The largest tranche is going to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Trust, which will receive 9.4 million shares. The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation will receive 943,384 shares, and the Sherwood Foundation, Howard G Buffett Foundation and NoVo Foundation will each receive 660,366 shares.
Buffett made waves a year ago when he said he plans to cut off donations to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation after his death and let his three children decide how to distribute the rest of his fortune.
Berkshire Hathaway's Class B stock has climbed 19.1 per cent over the last 12 months, topping the broad US stock market's return of 14.1 per cent, including dividends.
Buffett is famous on Wall Street for buying companies at good prices and being more conservative when prices look too high. The bargain-hunting approach has helped him amass a fortune worth about USD 145 billion, with basically all of it in Berkshire Hathaway's stock.
'Nothing extraordinary has occurred at Berkshire; a very long runway, simple and generally sound decisions, the American tailwind and compounding effects produced my current wealth,' Buffett said in a statement.
'My will provides that about 99½% of my estate is destined for philanthropic usage.' (AP) ARI

India pavilion inaugurated in New York to celebrate 200 Years of Assam Tea

'As we celebrate 200 years of Assam Tea, we do so not only with pride in our legacy but with a clear vision for the future,' he said during the inauguration on Sunday. Assam Tea is a global symbol of strength, flavour, and heritage that has shaped livelihoods, cultures, and economies since its discovery in 1823 along the banks of the Brahmaputra River, the chief secretary was quoted as saying in an official statement. Guwahati, Jun 30 (PTI) Assam's Chief Secretary Ravi Kota has inaugurated an India pavilion at the Summer Fancy Food Show 2025 in New York to celebrate 200 years of Assam Tea. For Assam, the pavilion serves as both a celebratory and strategic platform as Assam Tea stands as a bridge between tradition and innovation, Kota said. He pointed out four startups — Aromica Tea, Woolah Tea, Dorei Tea, and Earth Tea – 'provide a flavour of tea startups brewing innovation in Assam and so we wanted to bring these brands here'. 'They are innovating new blends of exotic tea, and I am confident that these innovations will gain global visibility from this event,' he added. He also highlighted the vital role played by Assam's small tea growers, who contribute to 40 per cent of the state's production, and also pointed out the transformative impact of bought-leaf factories in the ecosystem. Kota said that a key enabler of this thriving industry is the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre, the largest in India by volume. Trading over 250 million kg annually, it provides buyers worldwide with access to a diverse array of Assam teas through a digital, transparent, and highly regulated platform. In 2024-25, more than 100 million kg of Assam tea were shipped to over 90 countries, generating nearly USD 285 million in exports. Major destinations include the United Kingdom, Russia, the UAE, Germany, Iraq, and China, underscoring Assam's position as a trusted supplier to both traditional and emerging tea markets. 'The Assam government is committed to deepening India-US relations through strategic initiatives involving AI, blockchain, and specialised summits,' Kota said. 'We are also planning to host the 'Heritage to Wellness' Tea Showcase across the US and sign MoUs with American universities, retailers, and innovation platforms to enhance traceability and promote sustainable partnerships,' he added. Consul General of India in New York Binaya S Pradhan was also present on the occasion. PTI DG DG ACD This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. Mukesh Ambani makes BIG plan with Russia! will stun US and China, will buy stake in…, Gautam Adani declines offer due to…

Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani (File) Mukesh Ambani is preparing for a major deal that can surprise not just India but also major countries like the US and China. According to a report by the Economic Times , the discussions are still in the early stages. Russian oil giant PJSC Rosneft Oil Company is in early talks with Reliance Industries for sale of its 49.13 per cent stake in Nayara Energy, which operates a 20-million tonnes-a-year oil refinery and 6,750 petrol pumps in India, reported PTI. Why Is Russian Company Selling Stake To Reliance? Rosneft is selling this stake because sanctions imposed by Western countries have made it difficult for them to withdraw money from India. On the other hand, Ambani wants to capitalize on this opportunity to further strengthen India's position in the oil sector. This deal has the potential to transform the global oil game, which is why countries like the US and China are closely monitoring it. Reliance In Talks With Russia's Rosneft Reliance has held preliminary talks for acquisition of Nayara, which will help it overtake state-owned Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) to become India's No.1 oil refiner as well as give a meaningful presence in the fuel marketing space. But the talks are at preliminary stage and there is no guarantee that they may lead to a definite deal as valuation remains a sticky ground, three sources with direct knowledge of the matter said. Top Rosneft officials have visited India at least thrice in the last one year, including visits to Ahmedabad and Mumbai, for talks with potential investors. For Rosneft, which is looking to exit from Nayara due to western sanctions limiting its ability to repatriate full earnings from India operations, a potential buyer could be one who has substantial earnings overseas or is an international company – both of which could make quick overseas payouts for the stake. Why Gautam Adani Declined Offer? The stake of Rosneft and UCP was offered to Reliance Industries, Adani Group, Saudi Aramco and state-owned ONGC/IOC combine among others. But the USD 20-billion valuation that Rosneft had put for Nayara was considered too steep a price by almost every potential investor. Adani Group politely declined the offer to invest in an oil refinery, which is considered a sunset business given the energy transition planned worldwide. Besides the asking price being too high, the conglomerate's understanding with French energy giant TotalEnergies, with whom it has stitched multi-billion dollar partnership in city gas and renewable energy space, also came in the way of investing in Nayara, the sources said, adding Adani had in its deal with TotalEnergies agreed to limit future investments in fossil fuel space to only natural gas. ‘Trade talks with US resume', says Canadian PM Carney after rescinding digital services tax

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said late Sunday that trade talks with the U.S. have resumed after Canada rescinded its plan to tax U.S. technology firms. U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that he was suspending trade talks with Canada over its plans to continue with its tax on technology firms, which he called 'a direct and blatant attack on our country.' The Canadian government said 'in anticipation' of a trade deal, Canada would rescind' the Digital Serves Tax. The tax was set to go into effect Monday, AP reported. Carney and Trump spoke on the phone Sunday, and Carney's office said they agreed to resume negotiations. 'Today's announcement will support a resumption of negotiations toward the July 21, 2025, timeline set out at this month's G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis,' Carney said in a statement. In May, Carney visited Trump at the White House, where he maintained a courteous but firm stance. Later, during the G7 summit held in Alberta, Trump traveled to Canada, and both leaders agreed to set a 30-day deadline to resolve ongoing trade discussions. However, in a post on his social media platform last Friday, Trump stated that Canada had notified the U.S. it would proceed with implementing its digital services tax. The tax was aimed at both domestic and international companies interacting with Canadian online users. The 3% levy was set to impact major U.S. firms such as Amazon, Google, Meta, Uber, and Airbnb, applying to their revenues generated from Canadian users. Due to its retroactive nature, the tax would have resulted in an estimated $2 billion bill for these companies, payable by the end of the month. Canada and the U.S. have been discussing easing a series of steep tariffs Trump imposed on goods from America's neighbor. Trump has imposed 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum as well as 25% tariffs on autos. He is also charging a 10% tax on imports from most countries, though he could raise rates on July 9, after the 90-day negotiating period he set would expire. Canada and Mexico face separate tariffs of as much as 25% that Trump put into place under the auspices of stopping fentanyl smuggling, though some products are still protected under the 2020 U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement signed during Trump's first term.
