‘My Oxford Year' Ending, Explained

Warning: The following contains spoilers for My Oxford Year. My Oxford Year has officially arrived on Netflix. Based on Julia Whelan's novel of the same time, the film follows ambitious American student Anna (played by Sofia Carson) on her year at Oxford University, where she meets and ends up falling in love with student teacher Jamie (Corey Mylchreest), despite them both agreeing to keep things casual. Anna later learns that Jamie is living with a rare, terminal form of cancer and has chosen to forgo further treatment in order to make the most of the time he has remaining, which is why he's been so hesitant to commit. While the film largely follows Whelan's novel, the two differ significantly in their conclusions. So, what exactly happens to Jamie? Read on for the full ending explained. In the novel, Jamie receives a temporary reprieve following a case of pneumonia and participation in a clinical trial, giving him the chance to fulfill his vow to journey across Europe with Anna, who is known as Ella in the book. The film takes a more sombre turn as Jamie's health begins to decline. Near the end, Anna wakes to find him unconscious beside her in bed. She rushes him to the hospital, where she stays faithfully by his side as he approaches the end of his life. After his passing, she imagines him accompanying her on her European travels—until those visions gradually dissolve, leaving her to face the journey on her own. She follows through on the adventures she and Jamie once dreamed of sharing, immersing herself in the world they had longed to explore together. It's a powerful turning point that reflects the impact Jamie had on her life—teaching her to release her fears, stop overthinking the future, and embrace the present more fully. The story comes full circle in the closing scene, set once again in the familiar Oxford classroom where Anna once sat as Jamie's student. A new group of students fills the room as Anna steps in, now standing at the front as their lecturer. Like Jamie before her, Anna invites her students to have some cake and says: 'Poetry isn't just studied—it's experienced. Let it move through you. Let it transform you.' By the end of the movie, Jamie is most definitely dead, but that's not to say the film isn't without a silver lining for Anna. 'Even though it's clear Anna's alone at the end. We left it a little bit ambiguous because we wanted the film to end with hope and with light,' Sofia explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. As to why the film opted for a different ending to the book, Corey told EW: 'It's better like that. It's more powerful. That is the direction that the book is heading in, and it would feel like hypocrisy for Jamie to speak all these things and for Anna to be understanding that philosophy of life [and not end there].' He continued: 'The impressive thing is that Jamie believes all of these things—forever is composed of nows—and he doesn't have that many nows left. So, what's really amazing is that he's doing all of this stuff and believes all these things with really not that much time left. If that wasn't true, it would feel like we're undervaluing his beliefs.' My Oxford Year is available to stream on Netflix.

Michael McDonald to join Doobie Brothers on new tour

The Doobie Brothers are headed back on the road. The band will launch its Walk This Road tour of North America on Aug. 4, celebrating a reunion for the ages. The tour comes on the heels of the June release of their "Walk This Road" album, a reunion for the legendary lineup of Patrick Simmons, Tom Johnston, John McFee and Michael McDonald. It's the first-ever studio album featuring all four principals – and the first in 40 years featuring McDonald, who returned to record with the band. The album, which has received rave reviews from critics, features throwback moments and cameos from the likes of Mavis Staples (on the fiery title track) and Mick Fleetwood. It "has something for everyone — honky-tonk, driving country, flirty Southern pop, moody folk and melodic rock," critics at the Associated Press wrote. Doobie Brothers celebrate new album with intimate, feel-good concert "Walk This Road" was recorded in the winter of 2024 with producer John Shanks and showcases the band members' songwriting process. All three of the songwriting members of the band worked individually with Shanks, bringing their own vibes to the trusted producer and then leaving it to him to meld everything into a cohesive work. The Doobies are in the midst of a whirlwind year, having recently returned from a July tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland and notching a spot in the Songwriters Hall of Fame on June 12. The group is already in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "It's a big deal both times," Johnston told The Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network. "The people you grew up listening to, the people that affected your music, kind of gave you direction that you latched onto, they're all in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame." "It's really gratifying to be brought in," he added. "At the same time, it's a little humbling, or maybe a lot humbling." Doobie Brothers on new album, tour, hall of fame: 'You have to think beyond your age' As for the European leg of the tour, Johnson said the group had "a good time." "The crowds were extremely responsive. We've been in Europe a lot of times, but you never know when you leave the country, pushing a new album. It's kind of amazing how people are responding to this – the response has been killer," he continued. "I couldn't hope for a better outcome." That said, he and the other Doobies are excited to return to the U.S., saying specifically of their Detroit show: "We end up there about once a year … We've been playing Pine Knob since, like, 1973 – I mean back in the days when (the) crab shack was still in business, and the Hilton out there, both of which are long gone." Along with all the classic hits, Johnston said the Doobies are including four songs from the new album on the current tour. "That's something we never do," he said. "Having people respond the way they are tells me that they know what they're listening to, that they've heard it. That's huge. That's a big deal."

Warner Bros. Discovery has appointed Sasha Breslau and Alessandro Volpato to lead content acquisitions for HBO Max in the U.K. & Ireland and Italy, respectively, as the company prepares for the streamer's early 2026 rollout across multiple European markets. Breslau will join as Vice President, Content Acquisitions for the UK and Ireland in October 2025. Reporting to Ragnhild Thorbech, SVP of Programming & Acquisitions, EMEA, she will oversee content sourcing, rights negotiations, and strategic programming partnerships. Her remit includes helping shape HBO Max's regional strategy and curating a diverse lineup of HBO Originals, Max Originals, Warner Bros. Based in Milan, he will lead negotiations with local and European studios and distributors and collaborate with the broader EMEA acquisitions team on pan-European projects. Breslau joins WBD after two decades at ITV, where she most recently served as Head of Content Acquisitions. She was a key architect of ITVX and ITVX Premium, overseeing the licensing of more than 8,000 hours of content. Among her acquisitions were Love & Death, The Twelve, One Tree Hill and The Originals — all top-performing titles for the platform — as well as the Oprah with Meghan & Harry special, ITV's most-watched non-sport broadcast since 2018. She also brokered multi-year deals with Disney for Family Guy and American Dad. Volpato joins from Prime Video & Amazon Studios, where he was Senior Manager, Content Acquisition. His portfolio included original Italian series such as Pesci Piccoli, Sconfort Zone, and Sono Lillo, alongside international fare like Those About to Die. A former executive at Warner Bros. International TV Distribution in London, he has also held strategic roles at Discovery Italia and co-founded the cultural non-profit CinemaItaliaUK. The appointments come as HBO Max accelerates its international expansion. Following a July 2025 relaunch that brought the platform to 12 new markets, HBO Max is now available in over 90 countries. Its U.K. and Irish debut in early 2026 will coincide with the expiration of WBD's output deal with Comcast-owned pay-TV group Sky, positioning the platform as the exclusive regional home for its flagship programming.
