Hojgaard twins hoping for British Open showdown
Nicolai Hojgaard threatened to match him, but had to settle for a 69 and a four-under halfway total when a birdie putt stopped on the edge of the 18th hole.
"I saw him quite early on the leaderboard, and I kind of wanted to follow it up," said Nicolai.
"A little frustrated I didn't manage to get to five (under) where he is."
The 24-year-olds have both enjoyed brilliant starts to their professional careers, but they are yet to fight it out in the latter stages of a major.
"I'm going to root for him until we are on Sunday's back nine," said Rasmus.
Nicolai added: "I cheer him on and happy to see him play well, but I also want to beat him.
"But it's a good relationship, and hopefully we'll have a good weekend and maybe battle it out on Sunday."
Rasmus has won five European Tour titles to Nicolai's three, although the latter was part of Europe's winning Ryder Cup team in 2023.
Nicolai said in the past they struggled to support each other.
"We played some amateur events where we were in a play-off, and it was pretty tense," admitted the world number 93.
"But now our relationship is better, and back then we couldn't handle those situations. We can do that now. Let's see what happens this weekend.
"Hopefully we'll get a chance to play with each other."
The twins are also fighting it out for places at the Ryder Cup in September.
Rasmus currently sits seventh in the European standings, one place outside the automatic spots, while Nicolai, down in 30th spot, needs a big finish in Northern Ireland.

Newcastle reject Liverpool bid for Isak: reports
Isak has been training at his old club Real Sociedad this week after reportedly telling Newcastle he wants to leave St James' Park. The 25-year-old has been linked with Liverpool since the end of last season and the Premier League champions are now believed to have formalised their interest with an offer of around £110 million ($159 million) plus potential add-ons. But Newcastle, who reportedly value Isak at £150 million, remain keen to hold onto their prize asset and have rebuffed Liverpool's initial bid. Isak, who joined Newcastle in a £60 million move from Real Sociedad in 2022, scored 23 Premier League goals last season to help Newcastle qualify for the Champions League. He has three years left on his Newcastle contract, but did not travel to Asia for the Magpies' ongoing pre-season tour, with the club saying he had a minor thigh injury. On Thursday, Real Sociedad confirmed he was at their Zubieta facility with his own trainers. It was reported on Friday that Newcastle had told Isak he could agree a new deal containing a get-out clause for next year, but he responded by insisting he wants to move now. Rees-Zammit to return to rugby after NFL dream ends
Rees-Zammit spent last season with Jacksonville Jaguars having been cut by the Kansas City Chiefs the previous campaign, but failed to make an NFL appearance for either franchise as a wide receiver. The 24-year-old had originally made the move across the sports by joining the NFL's International Player Pathway Program in 2024. "It's been a great experience but it's time to come home," Rees-Zammit said on social media. "I've decided that this is the best time to make this decision to give myself time to get everything in place for next season," he added. The former British and Irish Lions speedster did not disclose which club he would be playing for in the coming campaign. Struggling Wales' next game is against Argentina on November 9 as they eye a first Test win at home since August 2023.
