Raymond van Barneveld has received special dispensation to compete in a non-PDC event.
The darts community was taken aback this week when the Dutch icon, 58, revealed he had accepted a wildcard invite to participate in the World Seniors Champion of Champions tournament at the end of June. Normally, players with PDC Tour Cards are banned from featuring in TV or streamed competitions that aren't managed by the PDC.

Therefore, Van Barneveld's involvement in the World Seniors event led to speculation over his future at the top level. But the five-time world champion is still part of the PDC, which has sanctioned his participation in the Champion of Champions, which will be held at the MODUS Live Lounge in Portsmouth on June 29.

When approached, the PDC confirmed: "Raymond has asked for, and been granted, permission to play in the event."
Meanwhile, Jason Francis, chairman of World Seniors Darts, confirmed on social media that van Barneveld had adhered to proper protocols. He shared on X: "RVB followed the correct procedures, and permission was granted. It's all good."
In response to a question from former world champion Keith Deller about whether other PDC players could follow suit, Francis added: "The PDC contract allows players to apply for permission. In this case [we're] delighted it's been granted for @Raybar180 to play as he is a legend and a fantastic addition but 11 others will want to prove a point so should be fantastic competition. Darts is the winner here."

Van Barneveld will renew his rivalries with the likes of Simon Whitlock, Steve Beaton and Mervyn King, who will also be part of the 12-player Champion of Champions field. He said: "I am looking forward to playing in this event.
"The sport has always loved big characters, and World Seniors Darts have brought them back, with most still playing to a high standard. They have a loyal crowd, and the popularity for the Seniors seems to grow and grow. I'm looking forward to catching up with the old faces of the sport, especially from my BDO era."

He insists he won't take his opponents lightly, adding: "I'm not coming over to Portsmouth thinking this will be easy. I will be giving my full respect to all of the players involved, and I will be preparing hard for this tournament.

"With players like Simon Whitlock, Steve Beaton, and Mervyn King - who've just stepped off the pro tour - plus Seniors World Champions like John Henderson, Robert Thornton and Ross Montgomery, it's going to be a real battle."

There is no suggestion that Van Barneveld is planning to leave the PDC Tour, and he is on course to be part of the field at next month's PDC World Matchplay at Blackpool's Winter Gardens.
But his exception to play in the Champion of Champions does potentially open the door to lower-ranked PDC players and stars of Van Barneveld's age to play in the MODUS Super Series and World Seniors events.

Young had appeared set to join Watford, where it all started for him as a kid in 1995. But talkSPORT now report that the ex-Manchester United star will join Ipswich instead. Watford were so keen on a reunion they even eyed him as captain. But reports suggest wages became an issue and the Hornets will now have to watch him rock up at Portman Road instead. Young burst onto the scene with Watford in 2003, before sealing a big-money £8million move to Aston Villa in 2007. Since then, he's packed in 485 top-flight appearances, lifted SIX trophies with United, and even bagged a Serie A title with Inter Milan. Now, after being released by Everton in May, the veteran full-back is ready for one last dance with the Tractor Boys. McKenna's been busy in the transfer market too, bringing in Dutch midfield dynamo Azor Matusiwa. He's also signed ex-Baggies defender Cedric Kipre and veteran stopper David Button. After a brutal relegation last term, Ipswich are aiming to bounce straight back to the Prem and they're banking on Young's experience to guide the way. 4 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

Man Utd told to sign £34m ex-Chelsea star who could be forced out due to Brexit

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim wants to sign a new midfielder this summer and the Red Devils have been urged to make a move for Atletico Madrid's Conor Gallagher Manchester United have been urged to sign former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher this summer. United are hoping to bounce back from their worst Premier League campaign this season, having finished 15th last season. ‌ They have already signed Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon and are set to complete a deal for Bryan Mbeumo, but Mirror Football understands that Ruben Amorim also want to sign a new midfielder after admitting it is an area of concern. ‌ Speaking after United's 0-0 draw with Leeds United in pre-season, Amorim said: "The gaps between our sectors was sometimes too big. We have a lack of pace, especially in the middle of the park and you can feel it is hard to win and bring the ball. But we created chances." ‌ And former United midfielder Gordon Strachan believes Gallagher would be an excellent addition. "Man Utd don't need a bit more bite, they need legs, real legs, real closing down," Strachan told OLBG. "Can Conor Gallagher do that? Yes he can, he's definitely got legs, he's a good teammate. Has he got enough imagination? I don't know, but if you have people like that with legs in there and have imagination around them, then he'd be a good signing. "The days of the luxury player, if you want to be a top side, are gone. So, Conor Gallagher has definitely got the legs. He's got the robustness. Has he got goals? "Has he got that flair? These players are hard to come by. Would I take him compared to some of the players that have played over the last couple of years at Man Utd? Yes, I would." Gallagher came though Chelsea's academy and left the club in 2024, joining Atletico Madrid in a £34million deal. The midfielder enjoyed an impressive first season in Spain, where he was one of three non-EU players alongside Samuel Lino and Nahuel Molina. ‌ Spanish clubs are only allowed to have three players without EU citizenship in their squad and Thiago Almada's move from Botafogo this summer means they now have four. As a result, Spanish outlet COPE are reporting that one of Gallagher, Lino and Molina will depart. Atletico have already had a busy summer, signing Almada, Clement Lenglet, Juan Musso, Matteo Ruggeri, Alex Baena and Johnny Cardoso and selling Rodrigo Riquelme and Angel Correa. Cesar Azpilicueta, Axel Witsel and Reinildo Mandava have also left after their contracts expired.

‘I'm awkward… I don't fit the mould' – James Wade slams darts chiefs and says he's ‘crushed' by Premier League snub

JAMES WADE says he feels 'like a lemon' being left out of the Premier League, but will keep working hard to be part of it. 'The Machine' recently moved up three places in the Professional Darts Corporation's Order of Merit to No.5, meaning he is one spot away from being automatically included in next year's Premier League with the rest of the top four. 3 Wade has been in excellent form 3 He doesn't think the Premier League want him though 3 He's spoken out about why he thinks he's been excluded Credit: Getty The 2009 Premier League winner hasn't competed in the tournament since the 2022 edition, which saw him finish third. Fellow Englishman Stephen Bunting is currently fourth in the PDC rankings, and after a strong first round showing at the World Matchplay by beating Joe Cullen 10-3 while averaging 104.44, Wade's form suggests he could push to overtake him. However, 'exhausted' Wade has joked the PDC would 'change the qualification gaps' to stop him playing in the Premier League. He said: "I think I've paid enough dues, and I think I've done enough things, and I think I've given enough of my life to the PDC that I'd like to get those rewards. read more LUKE OUT Luke Littler narrowly misses out on World Matchplay record after thumping win "But I don't think that'd ever happen to me. I think if I was to get back into the top four things would change with the qualification gaps. "I just think it would change. I'm not what they need and I'm not probably what they want, but I want to be there a hundred percent.' After the top four automatically qualify, the rest of the players are selected by Sky Sports and the PDC and assessed on marketability and popularity. And Wade puts him being left out for the last three years on him being 'awkward.' BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK Asked for his theory on his exclusion, he said: 'Because I'm awkward. I'm an awkward character. I probably don't say the right things at the right times. "If I was great at saying the right things at the right time, I probably would've been in all the World Series the last 12 months. But I don't quite fit into that mould. Two-time world champion fires dig at Luke Littler and Co with damning verdict of darts' 'boring' new stars "There's other players that do manage to get those things and unfortunately, I don't. I'd love to travel the world. I've been doing it for 25 years. "Do you not think I want to travel the world? Do you not think I want to represent the PDC? Do you not think I want my children and my wife to see me do great things? 'If anything, it crushes me. It crushes me. Why wouldn't it crush me? I'm perhaps not getting what I maybe could have got. So, it's exhausting not to be in that. "But I'll keep trying as hard as I can. I want to be in it all. I want to be part of it all. Of course, I do because when you're not in it, you feel like a lemon.' Wade next faces Wessel Nijman in round two in Blackpool.
