Iraq to choose foreign firm to finish Al-Faw Grand Port's superstructure
Al-Fartousi told the state-run news agency (INA) that 11 foreign firms were asked to bid on a contract and that it would be awarded to the operator who best fits the port's operational and commercial demands, as backed by a full feasibility assessment covering volume and return expectations.
The Iraqi Minister of Transport, Razzaq Al-Saadawi, revealed in March that the first phase of the Al-Faw Grand Port will be completed by the end of 2025.
The first phase of the project consists of five piers, which have been completely finished; a 62-kilometer road that connects the Al-Faw Grand Port to Umm Qasr port city; a 2,400-meter-long submerged tunnel; a ship canal; and a container yard, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
The Al-Faw Grand Port is located on the Khor Abdallah Channel, near the mouth of Shatt Al-Arab.
According to Maritime Gateway News, the five container shipping berths, which have been constructed by Daewoo E&C, a company located in South Korea, can each hold ships up to 23,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).
With 100 berths and the potential to accommodate 7.5 million TEU per year, the Al-Faw Grand Port is projected to overtake Dubai's 67-berth Jebel Ali as the Middle East's largest container port when completed in 2038.
The port's first phase, which is expected to be completed in 2028, has the potential to accommodate four million TEU of cargo per year.
The $7 billion logistics project, which connects Basra to Turkey by land, will compete with Egypt's Suez Canal and establish Basra as a gateway to Europe.

Iraq expands agricultural lands as Turkey increases water flows
Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture revealed on Saturday that increased water supplies from Turkey will allow for the expansion of agricultural areas in the country. The spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture, Mahdi Sahar, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that after receiving details about increasing water flows from Turkey, Iraq is waiting for water reserves to become larger so that it may add areas designated for the development of summer vegetable and fodder crops to assist agriculture and livestock production. During a meeting with Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani last week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to Iraq's request to increase the water delivery rate to 420 cubic meters per second to address the ongoing drought issue. The step will increase water flows along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, delivering water to all Iraqis, particularly in the southern parts of the country that are experiencing drought and water shortages. Since Turkey is the source of 90 percent of Iraq's water supplies, the two countries struck a strategic agreement on water management.

Iraq starts running new electricity transmission line in Basra
Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, declared on Monday that a new 480-megawatt electricity transmission line in the southern Iraqi province of Basra—the Faw 400 KV-Industrial Institute 132 KV line—is now operational. The ministry mentioned in a statement that the new electricity transmission line, which aims to improve the reliability of the electrical system in Basra and other areas in southern Iraq, went into operation for the first time on Monday, the Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported. This crucial line is part of the ministry's strategy to improve the infrastructure of the transmission network and attain energy sustainability in Basra and the southern provinces, according to Fadel. The initiative is also part of the technical solutions adopted by the ministry to address obstacles and enhance the efficiency of energy transmission systems. With a total capacity of 480 megawatts, the new transmission line spans 76 kilometers and consists of 244 transmission towers, providing a more reliable power supply to several areas in Basra, particularly Abu Al-Khasib District. The significance of the power transmission line extends beyond enhancing local service. As part of the electricity interconnection project with the Gulf States, which the Iraqi ministry seeks to carry out as a strategic step toward regional energy integration, it also intends to increase the network's adaptability.
