‘We can't be there 24/7': JPJ proposes CCTV to punish lane abuse by motorists, cyclists
The proposal was floated to improve cyclist safety without the need for constant on-ground enforcement, Putrajaya JPJ assistant director (operations) Mohd Alifarihan Abdullah said today.
'We can't be there 24/7, but if we install CCTVs at key points, we can record evidence and take appropriate action.
'We know bicycle lanes and emergency lanes are encroached regularly creating hazardous situations.
'We've seen cases where motorcycles are clearly in the wrong lane, and with video evidence, we can issue summonses or even arrest repeat offenders,' ,' he said during a town hall session titled 'Public Roads Don't Belong to Bicycle Gangs' at Pantai Dalam here.
The public talk was moderated by former sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin, an avid cyclist who has experienced a nasty fall into a pothole while cycling.

Cycling advocacy has grown in recent years, but so too have conflicts between cyclists and other road users.
A recent video clip shared online showing an MRT feeder bus driving close to a group of cyclists who were riding abreast on a narrow street, leading to a brief confrontation reignited debate over road safety.
During the town hall session, other speakers pointed to common offences committed by both groups, such as cyclists ignoring traffic lights or veering across lanes, and motorcyclists entering bicycle paths.
The JPJ officer noted that while laws do exist to protect cyclists, enforcement is difficult due to vague practices and inconsistent road behaviour, particularly when cyclists ride two-abreast.
Alifarihan said that 'many cyclists themselves are not fully compliant' with traffic rules in real life.
'Some prefer riding in long columns, others in pairs, and that creates a grey area for enforcement. We need to modernise our approach to make cycling safer,' he added.

Outdated gear under scrutiny in 22nd Regiment commando's death off Kuantan, says Army chief
LENGGONG, July 29 — The Malaysian Army is still conducting an internal investigation into the death of a 22nd Commando Regiment member from the Grup Gerak Khas, with the matter currently under review by a board of inquiry set up by the force. Army Chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan said preliminary findings suggest the incident may have involved issues related to the equipment used at the time. 'Early findings show that the equipment involved was rather old, which could have been a contributing factor. 'We are also carrying out a full audit and further investigation to determine whether the incident was caused by equipment failure or human error,' he said after officiating the final assault and closing ceremony of the 2025 Keris Strike Exercise at Felda Lawin Selatan earlier today. On July 3, Cpl Mohd Haswansir Julnasir, 30, died during Exercise Seaghost Series 1/2025 in the waters off Kuantan, Pahang. He was reported missing around 12.15 pm while conducting a dive using a closed-circuit breathing apparatus. His body was recovered by rescue teams on July 5, at approximately 10 am. Commenting further, Muhammad Hafizuddeain said the military adheres to scheduled maintenance procedures for all equipment and weaponry based on their service lifespan. 'Every asset has a life-cycle policy of typically 10 or 20 years and is subject to regular maintenance. 'We are currently reviewing whether these maintenance protocols were followed, and the investigation timeline will depend on the complexity of the issues involved,' he said. He acknowledged that the Malaysian Army faces challenges in managing ageing assets, many of which are legacy systems such as older vehicles and support equipment. Nonetheless, he said the Army continues to carry out thorough maintenance to ensure operational readiness remains at an optimal level. — Bernama

DPM Zahid: Govt to roll out multi-ministry blitz to tackle 53pc surge in child sexual crimes in Malaysia
PUTRAJAYA, July 29 — The government will adopt an integrated approach involving various ministries and agencies to address the sharp rise in cases of sexual crimes against children, which have surged by 53.2 per cent over the past four years. Deputy Prime Minister and National Social Council (MSN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it will involve the Home Ministry, Royal Malaysia Police, Youth and Sports Ministry, and Women, Family and Community Development Ministry to tackle the issue comprehensively, firmly and effectively. 'Statistics show that cases of sexual crimes against children rose from 2,541 in 2020 to 3,892 in 2024. 'The number of victims also increased from 2,561 to 3,988 over the same period, a jump of 55.7 per cent,' he said in a statement after chairing the MSN Meeting No. 2/2025 here today. Ahmad Zahid said technological advancements and the industrial revolution have led to increasingly sophisticated criminal modus operandi, including the use of deepfake technology and digital identity theft. Other planned measures include organising the 'Child Protection: Addressing Cyber Threats and Sexual Crimes' seminar in November. The meeting also reviewed the implementation of the National Social Policy 2030 and the development of the 2026-2030 Action Plan, which is in its final phase and will be presented to the Cabinet in October. Ahmad Zahid said the issue of homeless individuals with mental disorders who have not received treatment due to the lack of special placement facilities was also raised. 'The council supports the Health Ministry's initiative to set up a task force to establish a psychiatric nursing care home,' he said. The meeting also discussed the proposed formation of a special committee on Islamic preschool education to coordinate matters related to registration, safety, health, as well as curriculum and teaching staff strategies. In addition, the meeting examined the issue of skills mismatch among graduates, with Department of Statistics data showing that 2.06 million graduates are currently working in sectors not commensurate with their qualifications. 'To address this strategically, the MyMAHIR initiative, led by the Human Resource Ministry and TalentCorp, has been launched. 'To date, 66 industry-driven training programmes have been approved under the MyMAHIR Future Skills Talent Council, covering high-impact sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, data analytics and the green economy. 'These programmes not only provide high-skilled training but also come with job guarantees, offering an average starting salary of RM3,000 to RM6,000 per month,' he said. Ahmad Zahid said that starting this year, MSN membership has been expanded to include the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry, Agriculture and Food Security Ministry, Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry, Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, and the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) to strengthen policy implementation impact. — Bernama
